How often do you Party? (i.e. get together for "traditional" dancing and singing)

I'm English - I'll generally sing Auld Lang Syne with whoever is about on New Year's Eve, but I'm probably in the minority there - a lot of English people don't know it. Otherwise there's not really a point in the calendar we would celebrate by all singing a "traditional" song together. Football fans will sing football songs together, but otherwise you never really hear a whole pub singing a song together - I believe that's more common in Ireland (and possibly Scotland?). People will obviously sing together at church or in choirs but that doesn't feel like what you're looking for. As for dancing "traditional" dances, ceilidh is the obvious one but that's firmly Scottish and again is something most English people may not be familiar with (although you can go to them down here). Morris Dancing is the "traditional" English dance but is not popular; you will get Morris dance troupes performing at May Day celebrations and the like but I would say it's seen by most as a bit cringe, and probably <1% of the population has ever Morris danced. Most people's experience of public dancing is at clubs and weddings etc. - or at particular classes/nights like salsa or whatever because they like dancing and have actively sought it out.

Maybe we will be soon with you?

How would Japanese style public bathing go down in modern UK?

Yeah but maybe I want to continue to be able to go to the swimming pool or the sauna or whatever in the UK, without a cultural shift that means suddenly everyone is same gender and naked.

So club together with all your "big manly man friends", rent an airbnb in the UK with a nice big hot-tub, hop in it naked with them (and then do whatever feels natural). Nobody's stopping you. Just leave me out of it.

That makes sense now. I definitely pronounce it with the soft "g" (so "booj-ee"). Is that the posh way of pronouncing it? I don't think I've ever heard anyone go for the hard "g" lol.

That's interesting. Also 2000s (left school in 07). Boys' public school. It was an extremely homophobic environment. Only one boy out of ~150 in our year came out in sixth form and was a social pariah because of it.

Why GP Surgeries are called ā€œSurgeriesā€?

Posted by New-Organization-121@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 72 comments

dnnsshly@reddit

In British English a surgery refers to a place where a medical practitioner treats or advises patients. It doesn't necessarily mean a place where surgery (as in, an operation) happens, although we do also use the word in that sense.

How are James May, Richard Hammond, and Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear regarded today?

>I’m not trying to suggest that columnists are not journalists. You appeared to be jumping in to defend someone who was. >I adore Hunter s. Thomson’s writing, but no serious outlet would publish his writing under the headings of ā€œnewsā€ or reportage. I'm not saying it's news or reportage. My point is precisely that it is not news or reportage, but is still journalism. >Similarly, there is a reason that decent newspapers have a ā€œnewsā€ section and then very clearly indicated sections called ā€œartsā€ or ā€œcultureā€ or similar, and that’s where the restaurant / theatre etc reviews go. Thanks for stating the obvious. I guess? The point remains that your original statement of "unlike all other journalists their role is not based on unbiased reporting of facts" was wrong. Pretty much all forms of journalism *other* than news reporting involves the writer's opinion.

I know what a columnist is. What I am disputing is that they are not "real journalists". You happen to be wrong that all other types of journalism are based on unbiased reporting of facts, though. Gonzo journalism is by definition subjective. Investigative journalism is often very partial. Theatre or food critics are not columnists, but are both types of journalist who are paid to give their opinions on things.

I'm not a Clarkson fan so I'm not up on his specific beer preferences. My point is that his public image is of the kind of bloke who'd appreciate an Old Speckled Hen. A real meat and potatoes, straight up and down, Beef Wellington, "Don’t trust the Argies!", dick in the vagina, cheddar cheese and chicken tikka masala man. Maybe he also prefers small tits.

TIL he voted remain, but he is still highly critical of the EU. And I think a lot of libertarians like to pose as being a apolitical but are actually pretty right wing (I know left wing libertarians exist but he us certainly not one of them). I suspect his Times columns would support that assessment. But admittedly I've not read them so I may be wrong.

Short answer: no. Longer answer (from Wikipedia): In 2020, Clarkson stated that he usually votes for the Conservative Party, claiming not to be a natural Tory but "it just happens to be that every time it comes around and you weigh up which is going to provide you with a better life, the better country to live in, then it's usually the Conservatives".

I'm not sure if I really understand your final question but if it's "are they famous" then the answer is yes. All three are household names but Clarkson is considerably more famous than the other two - he has presented our version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" for years, "Clarkson's Farm" is huge, and he is a regular talking head on the TV. In answer to "are they well regarded" in the title, when it comes to Clarkson at least that's complicated. A lot of people love him as he is a charismatic man but he has quite strong right-wing views which also alienate many. I don't think people have such strong opinions of the other two, beyond lefties (like me, to be clear) seeing them in a dim light as a Clarkson-enabler. The comedian Stewart Lee has a good bit on "Richard "the hamster" Hammond", which you could Google if you want to understand why.

What is the best tea?

Posted by AccomplishedTip8586@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 99 comments

dnnsshly@reddit

The two products are in different categories. Yorkshire Tea is highly talked about because there is a consensus that it's the "best" everyday, budget teabag that you can buy from any supermarket in the UK. I've never heard of English Tea Shop or seen them in a supermarket. From Googling they look like a much smaller brand. English Tea Shop is also much more expensive: 15 pyramid teabags of English Breakfast Tea costs £3.99 on sale in their Amazon shop, whereas you can get 40 Yorkshire Tea teabags for £2.00 from Tesco. That works out at 27p vs 5p per bag, so you're > paying five times as much for EBT. And Yorkshire will be even cheaper per bag if you buy in larger quantities. Of course you're going to find better quality teas that Yorkshire Tea at a higher price point. Nobody thinks it's the best tea money can buy.
