About 20 years I thought of retraining as an architect but the time to quality and no certainty of earning more than I was then, just didn’t seem worth it.

Depends on time to retirement surely. £1m would be same salary (without raises) from here to retirement so could I live of that or need double as you suggest? Dream about it at the weekend and then go back to work on Monday.

I feel like I missed out on the Golden Age of IT work

Oh yes, those were the days we who were there miss. Good post. I am at tail end of my working career and, with Admin privileges, spend half my day dealing with Silverfort prompts. How tedious the World of IT has become. Thanks all you hacking/spamming/scamming \*\*\*\*\*\*ds.

craigontour@reddit

Don’t quit (not because of this). You’ll be a better person by facing into the wind and improving how you manage change. Identify the reason for the mistake and explain to the stakeholders how you will improve moving forward.

Say you will trial it and then demonstrate how overall productivity drops because most of the scheduled meetings are 2 minute fixes not 15 minutes and you are unable to mange your time effectively.

I am the IT department. How do I tactfully negotiate a raise?

Posted by Carter_PB@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 466 comments

craigontour@reddit

Too much to read sorry. I’m 57 and been in IT since graduation. If you politely ask for a raise in line with the industry and share stats, but the company does not acknowledge then they never will. Find another job. Some managers/directors/owners just consider IT as a service and they can replace you anytime - eg outsource - so won’t be pressured into paying more than they want. Time to move on.

Enjoy it while it lasts. I did same at that age. If you are planning on starting a family, expect it to go away. By the time you get the time back your life will probably have changed such that you wouldn’t spend your time like that.

If I said to you "open AD and find the user account John Smith" in a Service Desk interview would you understand the question?

Posted by TheDawiWhisperer@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 1560 comments

craigontour@reddit

I would say that “Open AD” is a colloquialism in the context you have used it. Not technically correct, but to someone who speaks and reads English very well, and primarily works in an English-speaking environment, I think it would be known. What you are asking though is “the PC in front of you is an AD Server, so using a tool of your choice, bring up on screen the information for users account ‘blah’”.

I think a lot of us here have experienced similar challenges to yours and it is coming out in some people’s comments. Looks like a really hard task ahead - you sound positive at the moment - so you can expect long working hours, high expectations from (largely IT illiterate) users, but I’m sure you’ll learn heaps. Try to do things the right way (continue to ask if in doubt) and use automation everywhere. Try to think about adding value to business for everything you do and measure it - how many hours saved, etc. Send to management a report of these benefits and savings every 1-3 months. Even if they don’t give you just rewards you can put on CV for next job. Good luck. My days of taking on such a challenge are long gone.

Posted by Error403_FORBlDDEN@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 868 comments

We’re being asked to return to office 3 days a week. I am in UK and work mainly with colleagues in India so don’t see the necessity. I sometimes find office bearable but most of the time, like today, it is noisy.

Why are you NOT interested in automation?

Posted by Murhawk013@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 489 comments

craigontour@reddit

I think there is Automation-for-Automations’ sake, which might would involve more time to write than will save the amount of accumulated effort. Then there is Automating the repeated tasks we do daily - maybe hourly - and can be done by a machine. Also, factors like tedium, human error and focus come into play for the individual. I don’t automate everything I do but I do automate the grunt work that helps me understand the status of my domain and what actions I might need to take as a priority.

What one thing would you ban in the UK if you could?

Posted by CapitalSprinkles2242@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 3773 comments

IT Engineers - Do I have imposter syndrome or is IT just slow most of the time. Boss says I’m doing great, his boss says the same, then there’s me anxious af because I feel I’m not getting a lot of work.

Posted by OldManThatOnceCould@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 331 comments

craigontour@reddit

Yeah, I find the same. Curse myself when seems like nothing getting done, but Leadership’s opinion matters most. They’re probably seeing same in all their teams, which you may not be able to.

Oh god no, they are seen by many, especially those industries where image matters (design, advertising, media, etc), that Apple laptops are cool and they must have one. Don’t forget these users don’t know shit about it - would know USB a from z!

Can someone explain to me why we even use print servers?

Posted by Far_Paint5187@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 404 comments

craigontour@reddit

I used to manage IT for design agency and users used to send to print and not go get the paper as changed their mind - seen something they can change - so send another .. and another. Waste of ink and paper. Better to stack up the jobs and get the user to manage them themselves. They’ll learn eventually.
