Do you think vaping is worse than smoking? Explain why?

Posted by Begoneevilone@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 815 comments

brookeslegit2@reddit

As a partial smoker who dips between both, I can safely say vaping is ten times more addictive for me, because I can do it just about anywhere (I am conscious so take myself to the toilet at work to do it with a less plume inducing and flavour/scent less vape), there’s no end to it so you can just go and before you know it it’s been ten/fifteen minutes you’ve been at it, it’s far cheaper and we’re told it’s healthier so you feel less bad doing it. Problem is it’s so much harder to quit as the nicotine is often much higher than cigarettes puff for puff, some flavours taste great and are clearly marketed to kids, you build a million more habits and associations of where is appropriate to do so and when I run out of vape if im out I will often have cigarettes to fulfil that crave. Often makes you light headed, sometimes you wake up tight chested and weezing and as others have pointed out we really don’t know the long term effects yet so it really could be as bad or worse than cigarettes. Anyway I’ve switched solely to the Nordic spirits and actually prefer them to both, gradually tapering down to the low strength ones while I wean myself off entirely again. Dumb habit entirely, I did quit for 3 years. Although both my parents have Parkinsons and nicotine is supposedly a risk reducer for that if I’m to follow the same route 😅 Dumb habit,

Are foxes vermin and does feeding them prevent them from screaming at night?

Yes, I’m into watches so I have a nice automatic for the weekends and a Fitbit for the week as I’m neurotic about sleep. Regardless I’m still only ever checking the time on my phone…

Manchester - always thought it would be ‘meh’ London - I went after lockdown and loved it, has its own vibe entirely and can’t wait to go back. Blackpool on that same trip was horrific, was expecting British vegas but found it more like British skid row…

brookeslegit2@reddit

Well perhaps a mistaken way of phrasing it, maybe I should’ve said ‘what was different’ about me. It’s nothing I’m ashamed about in any way, tbh all my idols growing up seem to have it so no wonder I gravitated towards their art/music - just scary when I was lost throughout my early and mid 20s wondering why everyone around was able to just get on with life while I had no excuse other than a total inability to just get on with things.

What's your guardian angel story?

brookeslegit2@reddit

I’m taking oxfords definition: an extraordinary and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore attributed to a divine agency. "the miracle of rising from the grave" With regard to the other bit - I don’t know. I’m plagued with generalised anxiety so if I read into every bad feeling a lot of bad stuff would be happening around me, so either my tuning is out or people just have bad feelings and as with statistical inevitability some people are gonna find an event to relate to that. I really don’t know. I come from a family of self labelled psychics and mystics and watched first hand how my aunt, father and cousins all tell different stories over time with slightly more embellishment. I’m not saying no, I’m just saying I just don’t have these experiences, wish I did…

Well by definition a miracle can’t be explained by science, most of the stories above can, however unlikely the various events within the story are, it’s not like gravity switched off and the person didn’t fall off the bridge they were gonna jump from.

Did tell one recently what my uncle said and he disagreed and said he loved his career in it. Just goes to show kids, don’t always listen to jaded boomers…

brookeslegit2@reddit

No, I’m always looking for stuff like this but I just see it as the tale with eerily connected dots resulting in a favourable outcome, rather than the other 99% of similar stories that had a negative ending. Statistically these things must happen, and they’re never truly miraculous, rather just coincidental points that bear no relation to one another that we assimilate into one single story like constellations in the sky.

That I’m very smart but just don’t apply myself because I’m a stoner. I’m not that smart, I’m just very good at remembering bits about everything I’ve had a vague interest in during an ADHD hyperfocus - but nothing substantial depth to warrant expert level. Also I don’t smoke weed these days, again that was just self medicating long before I knew what was wrong with me.

brookeslegit2@reddit

I’d kinda like this, raised Catholic but kinda fell out of it in my teens. Would be too contrived to try to believe in it now on faith alone. Although I couldn’t go back to Catholic Church as that shit was a chore, I’m always envious of the seemingly happy community folk when I go to baptisms etc. I think I’ve listened to too much countercultural stuff for it to be appropriate now.

Lived in America for a year, got really annoyed everyone speaks to you there, on the bus, waiting in a queue, at the bar - and way worse when they hear the accent. Anyway must’ve gotten used to it, because when I came home I was in the habit of just striking up conversation with anyone nearby, didn’t take long before I remembered we don’t do that… I was actually a bit upset for a while 😅

American girlfriend, took her around wendover woods in Aylesbury a few weeks ago and she said ‘do we have to worry about anything?’ I said ‘like what?’ She says ‘you know, mountain lions or bears’. Also found it intriguing we didn’t have to worry about a mass shooting at Guns n Roses last month. Likewise she found it hilarious when I tried to tell her how good whipsnade zoo was by telling her they had brown bears there, she said ‘is that all?’ I said na they have lions and tigers and everything and she cried with laughter, apparently bears aren’t on that level, and she gets them in her garden all the time…

Yeah every time I go I see the sneaky ways - smaller plates and cutesie ways of serving that are designed to give you less while the price goes up and up everywhere. A sprinkle of powder constitutes ‘loaded’ fries and no doubt cheaper oils and ingredients are being used. Supermarket food is a joke now, I can’t believe how small and flavourless everything at Tesco is now too.

Ok so I managed to just come up with a practice myself - I just imagined every breath in is a shovel of rocks and earth (thoughts and feelings) and each breath out is those rocks being tossed out of the whole as a dig deep, imagining myself digging deeper down a pit. So far the last three days this has worked every time to get to this hollow place with not a lot going on. My body is certainly relaxed at this point, so is the mind, it’s just interesting.

I guess for me it’s the frustration that without effort my mind won’t concentrate, but with effort (mainly Sam Harris/headspace) it’s felt like such mental gymnastics to ‘observe the observer’ and that sorta stuff then I beat myself up for not being able to grasp it. I know I can clearly do it, just don’t seem to remember how?

Tbh I can’t offer much advice but only hope, when I was about 11 I had what I only recently learned is existential OCD and remember how sucky it was to think all was pointless (ruined Disneyland holiday). At the time I just thought my soul had left me. I think I even remember thinking everything is fucked and there’s no way out, then when I accepted that I guess I just got over it. It’s weird because now I’m just comfortably agnostic, not spiritual, love reading philosophy and none of its ever touched that crushing time. Just goes to show anxiety/ocd is bullshit at the end of the day - now if I could just use that on my own problems since…
