How have I been waiting for an ambulance for 8 hours?

My grandpa fell in the night recently and is too weak to lift himself up so he was literally lying on his face for six hours. I drove across the country to pick him up quicker than the ambulance got there

Suffering from SAD: Any good tips on overcoming this now the weather has turned and the days are shorter?

get morning, midday and dusk light so your circadian rhythm is in check. especially try and get out for as much time as possible at midday where the light is brightest (even if it’s a dull day). exercise for endorphins. try and notice nice things as you walk around, like nice autumn leaves on the floor or sweet interactions between people. idk it helps me when i’m feeling really depressed to try and notice as many nice things about the world as possible, otherwise it’s easy to spiral. also get a SAD lamp

where should i go if i want to spend a couple hours outside alone rather than trapped inside buildings (house or work) all day feeling depressed?

you could always try cutting out beef and dairy to start with. beef is easy to avoid and dairy too, there are loads of alternative milks/butters and luckily restaurants now take dairy allergies seriously, which means it’s quite easy to eat dairy free if you’re eating out with friends

i think you would be happier as a vegan because it would align with your values. it only takes a couple of months to change habits and learn to cook a bunch of tasty vegan meals. if you try it out for a couple of months and see how you feel, nothing is stopping you from going back - or from eating plant based most of the time and occasionally having a bit of salmon or whatever

speaking as a non-vegan: being vegan is obviously much more ethical and better for the environment than eating animal products. animal suffering aside, the amount of land and food and water needed to raise animals (and grow the crops to feed them) is just simply not sustainable. it’s clearly the better choice to be vegan than to not be vegan. but it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. if everyone cut out the animal products that they could live without, while keeping in ‘that one thing that means they could never be vegan’ e.g. good cheddar or lamb chops, but ate plant based the rest of the time, the overall shift would have a great environmental impact. this would probably be more effective than trying to encourage most people to be militant vegans

they do associate with people who disagree, they just would rather that the one person they choose to spend the majority of their time with has the same values and eats the same food. it’s just nicer that way and if you are choosing from a bunch of random people who to partner up with, it makes sense to choose another vegan. /especially/ if you plan on having kids, who the vegan would presumably want to raise vegan too and this might be a big issue for the meat eater

of course you can do that 😂 i myself am in a relationship with a vegan and we do this. i just took issue with you calling vegans who don’t want to partner up with non-vegans ‘bigots’

i wasn’t being condescending, i just knew you knew what i was talking about in my original comment when you then said ‘it’s not literally painful in any way’. you and i both already knew about emotional pain before i said that comment but you chose to pretend you thought i was talking about real physical pain. and nobody is acting morally superior when a vegan says to a non vegan ‘i’m sorry but i want to be with another vegan because we share the same values’. obviously if they say ‘i don’t want to be with a disgusting meat eater’ or something like that, then that would be acting morally superior. however not wanting to partner up with a meat eater is not morally superior in itself. it might not even be about values, but about wanting to be able to cook together and eat together at dinner time. so much of the joy of life (at least for me lol) is about cooking and sharing food and you are kind of handicapping yourself in that department if you partner up as two people who don’t want to eat the same food basically ever (unless the meat eater has to make a sacrifice and eat vegan when they are together)

have you never experienced emotional pain? it registers as pain in the body, like when you get your heart broken and it feels like it actually hurts you. that’s the kind of pain i’m talking about. i’m not even vegan i just have empathy for vegans. it’s not the ‘sitting opposite’ part that we should be focusing on, it’s the ‘deciding to be partners with someone who is going to eat meat next to you at most meals’ which, if it’s difficult for you to be around because you are actually engaging in (ie really thinking about) the suffering it took for that animal to get onto the plate, then you have every right to not want to do without being called a bigot. and it’s totally different to the medication issue because animals do need to be tested on for those things - animals do not /need/ to be killed for their meat in most cases (in a society where food is not scarce and there are many other options). i’m not even going to address the road through habitat point because it’s clearly silly. come on now 😂

that is silly, it’s not a form of bigotry. some vegans are vegan ethically because seeing animals be exploited (killed for food when it isn’t necessary) is so painful to them that it actually hurts them engage in it, and sometimes just to be around. it is absolutely fair enough for them to not want to sit opposite someone who is eating a dead animal every day (their partner at dinner) when it hurts to watch. to some vegans it is like watching someone eat a dead puppy, because they care about all animals equally. they’re not judging the person, they just can’t be around it every single meal time, and it’s fair enough to choose a partner who shares your values
