What’s your approach to claiming expenses at work?

Posted by pinpoint321@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 184 comments

TumbleweedDeep4878@reddit

I claim the bare minimum but i work for the government and the first political event I was aware of growing up was the mp expense scandal so it has given me the sense expenses are the Devil

How likely am I to be called up?

If you’ve been in a UK hospital for more than a day or so, how did you not lose your mind?

I am allowed to work from anywhere but if I tried to work from a hospital bed my manager would insist I take sick leave. If you're ill enough to be in hospital you shouldn't be working.

Was there an incident in your childhood that your parents kept from you, which you found out about later in life?

Yeah my single mum took us on safari in South Africa and a week stay in Disneylands themed hotel 🤣. She also bought a house and a car which little old me didn't question. She died before I ever found out though. My Gran had to explain

Sorry mines very different tone to yours but I didn't realise my family won the lottery until i was like 20. We won like 90k in the noughties so it was pretty decent but not like crazy life changing. Once I found out a couple of holidays and things I didn't question as a child made sense. I only found out when I found the instructions on how to get to lotto hq written down in my mum's handwriting and asked what it was.

Are we putting our daughter's education at risk?

So you actually just need to get 5 GCSEs above a certain grade including English and maths. The issue is whether this would affect her self esteem compared to her peers doing 9-11. Additionally the American education system more fact based and less applied than the English system. England has standerdised tests where everyone nationally sits the same one (bit more complicated but you approximately) Also worth noting people referring to the UK but education is devolved meaning it varies from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Worth bearing in mind when looking up info online. Ultimately if you find a supportive school willing to work through the issues it will be fine

Is this a cultural barrier or am I just inconsiderate?

I had some more unfortunate circumstances that meant i couldn't go home and the first holidays were tough in a 2000 bed student village with like 50 people but I found other people and it got easier. Not to say give up on your family but sometimes you have to act like an adult to be treated like one.

TumbleweedDeep4878@reddit

I don't think anything you did was weird but also sounds like your home from uni for the holidays? I think a lot of parents expect you to fit right back in whereas you're kind of more adult now and used to living by your own rules. Best to slowly phase to not going back if you don't like it and just come back for more active visits rather than to live with them for a couple of weeks

25 is young to go back and fix your life. I do a lot of graduate recruitment and if used correctly the age and experience would count in your favor. Dont discount the value of retail/bar work in teaching you how to be a good employee

Do you need to study a subject at gcse to do it at a level?

Posted by Crazy-Highlight-9205@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 22 comments

TumbleweedDeep4878@reddit

Technically no but it will be harder. What's the subject? If it's something widely available there's a greater chance your teachers will expect you to have a grounding in the subject. If you go to the potential teacher and explain the situation they're likely to be willing to help give you extra advice and support

I took one day off school althiugh it was a Friday. Plus half the day she died. I think it was good to keep busy but i also didn't have to do all the paperwork. You could look at a phased return though? Do some half days and see how it sits with you

TumbleweedDeep4878@reddit

Again, not my fault you seem to struggle with reading and no my husband cannot take money out of my bank account so don't force your ideas on my marriage 👏 It's pretty cheap outside of school holidays. I just checked for my birthday in March and it's £450 for 4 for 4 nights so £28 per person per night or £113 per person which is pretty cheap. Also you don't have to pay for every activity. Say you went for 5 days: Day 1: arrive, swim, maybe meal out for first night - £30 - £40 per person max Day 2: chill, bike around, crazy golf - £10 per person Day 3: maybe this day you do pay for an activity - £30 - £70 per person. Day 4: chill day, swim, meal out for last night. Day 5: bike around , go out for lunch - £20 then leave You're looking at £120 but you could also not pay for an expensive activity. It's not that much compared to some holidays

Omfg. It's £100 for the hotel room so per person it's £200 for 4 nights. This is what i mean, you're not reading properly I've told you when and I've explained the pricing multiple times. I'm not your secretary. Btw lots of us are married and like to keep some financial independents.

TumbleweedDeep4878@reddit

I do look at the cost per person. I pay half and my partner pays the other half so I need to kno cosy per person. Mate if you can't read you'll struggle to use an online booking system tbh. £200 per person (as in the cost I as one person have to pay from my income) for 4 nights. Most hotel rooms that aren't falling apart are around £100
