I was also awarded Silver Medalist status for my JLP interview, although I wasn’t ultimately called up for that role. However, when I applied for another position, they allowed me to reuse my interview score from the Silver Medalist application, and I was successful in securing that job
Yeah, but this is also how my entire career began. Interviewed, felt it went brilliantly but was passed over for someone who lived closer (I had to relocate and couldn't start immediately). Two weeks later they called me saying other person didn't work out, do I want the job. 13 years in the industry now thanks to that sloppy seconds haha.
It's how I got my first full time salaried job too. It does happen.
I've also recruited and given the job to the person who was technically the second choice, although in that case she was actually _my_ first choice but stupid HR processes meant I had to offer to another candidate first, who thankfully declined.
That's also how I got my first entry-level job in the corporate world, and I ended up sticking with the company for more than ten years and growing into a fairly senior position.
Basically that and the person they hired is on a 3month probation period so if they mess it up withen 3 months they can just call you up and hope you'll accept it so they don't have to do another round of interviews
Depends if the war spreads. If M&S join Waitrose it could be over hy Christmas. If Sainsbury's manage to reinforce the baked beans tin wall with supplies from Tesco, this could rumble on and they'll probably call you up
I’ve worked for this company, they can silver medalist you for many reasons, usually the main one being availability. Honestly I do not recommend working for them as this company is a shell of what it once was. The staff are essentially a skeleton crew with expectation to work earlier and later than what you are paid. The management is a very exclusive clique that will stop at nothing to undermine you and the clientele will cling to the reputation of customer service from yesteryear while looking down on any new costcutting measure.
This may be true for most retail environments but this company really drills in the dystopia
People here are thinking this isn’t a real thing and just something they say to make you feel better (fair enough) I landed a job at waitrose (both JLP) after being given the silver medalist position. It is a genuine thing and if a role comes up you will get it.
Basically you are now in what recruiters refer to as the ‘talent pool’ or ‘candidate pool’. Most recruiters when they get a new role to fill look at the talent pool first before going out to market, they will then encourage you to apply or just offer based on the information they hold. Source, have implemented recruitment systems in the past.
If another vacancy comes up they'll pick you over the faff of running a whole new recruitment campaign. No telling if a vacancy will become available though
I worked at waitrose years ago & I got the same email as you but they called me back a few weeks later as someone was a no show, so there is hope my friend 🤞
Start applying for other jobs.
If they send another reply saying "we are now pleased to offer you a role"
Send them one back saying:
"Sorry. I am unavailable for that role.
*However*, you are now a Silver Medalist, should I become available for that role, I will inform you. Regards,
*Insert Name Here* "
Best of luck to you! I hope you get m&s too, heard it's pretty good to work there!
Whatever happens, don't be disheartened. I know it's difficult to remain optimistic when job-hunting, but you'll get to where you want to be one day.
Update on how the m&s interview goes next week?🤞🤝
I had this when I applied for a catering postion, got a call a couple days later asking if I was still interested.
It wasn't the best experience for me but it's very store and department dependant, hope you get it!
You've not missed out on much of you didn't accept the offer, the whole catering department is getting transferred to a new company who have significantly worse benefits
I worked there for a year a few years ago, popped in recently to see old colleagues and heard they were being absorbed by benugos. Really sucks for the ones working to get their 6 months paid leave, I'd be absolutely fuming.
If the top candidate drops out or fails probation they can offer to you with a few weeks still without having to reinterview. If you apply for another role soon enough they can also use this interview scoring to appoint but that's less common than the first one.
It does happen, not all that often but not 0% chance either.
Silver medalist is industry standard recruiter speak for “we like you and on another day you may have gotten the offer”.
Chances are they filled the roles they were hiring for with candidates further in the process.
It's basically if the person they hired bails or doesn't work out. Chances are low but not impossible. I was second pick for my job and I've been doing it for almost 15 years now.
Or if a similar vacancy comes up. The role OP applied for is listed as Supermarket Assistant, Various East London Branches, which seems like something they might recruit to fairly often. Daft wording aside, it's smart to keep a record of "could do the job, just missed the cut" people who they could just offer when the same role comes up in a different department/location instead of starting the recruitment from scratch.
I can only speak for the DWP as I got put on a reserve list. While I didn't get the job, 5 months later I got offered multiple roles that were similar. Public sector recruitment apparently is normal to take forever and that amount of time is normal. It took like 3 months to do the assessment, interview and first outcome lmao.
Throwaway account for obvious reasons. I may or may not work in senior retail management for the Partnership.
This basically means you’ll only get the job if the person ahead of you bails or rejects the role. They also have a 90 day probation that I’ve never seen anyone fail but if the hire leaves in this time or there are other vacancies in that position within 3 months you get a call.
As far as supermarkets go it’s a decent job, a lot more laid back than other supermarkets. Not working Sundays is a big no-no now which is probably why you’ve been canned. After multiple staff restructures a lot of Partners exercised their right to opt out of Sundays in protest so new vacancies are expected to pick these up and if they say no are expected to work every Saturday. Also note that anyone who’s been there longer than 15 years gets 1.5x time or even 2.0x time for Sundays and Bank Holidays that you won’t get.
You also have to suck up to the Partnership model even though it’s absolutely batshit crazy, so if you didn’t talk about co-ownership in your interview that might also be why you got canned.
Good luck!
I worked for Waitrose and was placed on something very similar. This was years ago and didn’t have a fancy condescending name though. I got the email notifying me that they’d save me for another role, applied and got another job elsewhere for 3 months, decided it was a shit job, Waitrose coincidentally then offered me a job. So total wait time for me was 3ish months but this was in London in 2019
Christ this is such a patronising way of putting it. It's common on the railways and it's how I got my job but we call it 'talent pool' which sounds a lot better than silver medallist.
I'd say minimal, as this stinks of something they say so as to improve their reputation. In the current job market they will have more than enough suitable applicants to cover any vacancies.
However I must ask - are you a university graduate looking for a stop-gap job, and/or do you intend to do anything else in the future that you mentioned in your CV, application, or interview?
Anything like that is an automatic block to jobs with most supermarkets. They can't say this directly, but I know Tesco and Sainsbury's use a fake "personality test" to invent an excuse as to why you were rejected.
If applying or interviewing for a supermarket job, you should always make abundantly clear you just want to work in a supermarket. You've got bills to pay, you've got kids/disabled relatives/a hungry dog, etc. You're a hard worker, you follow instructions, you don't tend to think for yourself or do things your own way. To that end I'd even remove any higher education from a CV before applying.
TLDR; when applying for supermarket jobs you have to be as amoral as these corporations are, so lie your tits off and just be prepared to back those lies up if need be
Had something similar happen in previous job, ended up getting an offer. I wouldn’t take it personally btw as some seem to insinuating here, it’s just based on scoring system. Fingers crossed for you!
Funny enough, I went through this same situation with JL. They did call me about another opening around a month later, but I’d already taken a different job by then.
