How difficult would your life be if your current partner suddenly left and you never saw them again?

I’d be fine both financially and socially because I’m the primary earner and between us I’ve always had the more active social life. But emotionally I’d be completely devastated. He’s the only person in my life who truly knows me, and I think I’d be very hesitant to get into another relationship if this one ended. I think I’d rather be alone.

Will the decline ever end or is this the new norm for the UK?

It’s not even limited to the Western World. My friends in Metro Manila can’t buy property there at all, and they all make decent money. The mortgage terms and rates there are just insane.

How do you feel about the Spanish protests against tourists?

Time_Pineapple4991@reddit

I don’t have any strong feelings about it because I’ve only been to Spain once (Barcelona a few years ago) and it was fine but I’m not really that interested in going back any time soon. I’m from Southeast Asia so if I want a beach holiday I’d rather save up and just go there. In terms of travel, I’ve always just been more interested in Central and Eastern Europe. That said, I do sympathise with people whose areas are struggling with overtourism. I live very close to Edinburgh and I basically avoid the centre from August-December because of how busy it gets. Also from a housing perspective, one of my closest friends lives there and he’s forced to stay in a 1 BR with his now-ex because they can’t afford to move out. Thankfully they broke up on good terms, but it’s still difficult not having your own space. Airbnb seems to cause a lot of problems in many places but I’d imagine that protestors have less access to landlords and the government officials who allow them to take over so much of the housing stock, and so they take it out on the tourists instead. Is it the fair thing to do? Probably not, but I’d imagine it’s a decision that’s borne out of desperation.

> In the UK we talk a lot about British values and adjusting to our culture if you come here. Do we do that when we go elsewhere? Do we even try? For what it’s worth, I’m a foreigner and I feel the UK is actually one of the better countries in Europe when it comes to not pressuring people into assimilating. Like if you’ve ever spoken to a British person as an ESL speaker, you’re usually met with extreme patience and helpfulness. Practices from other cultures are usually met with curiosity rather than distrust or disdain. Obviously that doesn’t apply to everyone but that’s just the general impression I get when I compare it to my travels in the continent.

Why is the weather so bad this year?

Time_Pineapple4991@reddit

It really just depends on what part of the country you’re in. I was in London last week and it was scorching there. It’s also relatively dry in my part of Scotland (East), although hasn’t really gotten warm yet. Interestingly people are saying we “didn’t get a summer” last year when actually it was just warm and sunny earlier in the year than usual, and I remember this because my sister came to visit us following a trip to Italy. It was raining and horrendously flooded in Northern Italy (they went for the F1 & it got cancelled) meanwhile it was sunny the whole time they were here. This was in late May. So my impression is just that the weather patterns have been wildly inconsistent.

Why were you not invited to your close 'friend's wedding?

Time_Pineapple4991@reddit

Yep. Ours would have even been a bigger logistical nightmare than your usual wedding because we’re both immigrants. The guests from my country would need a visa, as would the guests from my husband’s country. Destination weddings (which is what we would have needed to have) are incredibly expensive even if planned to be small and intimate. We much preferred just setting the money aside so we could put down a deposit on a home.

After my dad died, I decided I needed a change and moved to the UK. It was a very challenging experience and there are still aspects I struggle with (missing friends & family back home, knowing that life there has gone on without me, slowly forgetting some words in my other language and/or aspects of our culture), but on the whole it was good for me I think. The experience forced me to grow up a lot because I didn’t have anyone to rely on but myself. I’m quite proud of the live I’ve managed to build here, although I wish my dad could have met the person I eventually became. I think he would have worried about me less if he knew I’d find my feet here.

Yup, exactly this. I basically eloped and only told *my own family* about it after it happened. I’ve always been of the view that my wedding was my own, plus I hate being the centre of attention so doing things that way made sense for me.

I have an Apple watch and I took out insurance with Vitality - the latter of which rewards you for doing certain healthy things. I’m a reward-motivated person, so I’m like the prime target for that shit hahaha 7k+ steps gives me 3 points, 10k+ gives 5, 12.5k+ gives 8, and 30 mins workout at 70% max age-related heart rate also gives 8. If I get 12 points in a week, I get a free coffee from Caffe Nero. If I get 48 points in a month, I get a free cinema ticket. Barring one week when I was ill, I’ve been receiving those rewards consistently since getting the watch.

I “proposed” to my now-husband about a month into us dating. Basically I said, “Wow, I’m so happy I could marry you right now! Haha just kidding…unless…” and he said yeah I’d marry you too lol We didn’t get married until a year later though, on a day we both happened to have off. We bought a flat together a little over a year ago and are celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary next week. He’s the most wonderful person I’ve ever met, and I hope the afterlife is real because I feel like even a lifetime with him won’t be enough.

What other passport(s) do you have?

Posted by CapitalSprinkles2242@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 16 comments

Time_Pineapple4991@reddit

I am eligible for a Filipino one through my mother, although I never had it despite being born and raised in The Philippines. My parents just always ensured we had British passports since we were little, although we do have recognition of dual citizenship papers. I want to get a PH passport because my dual citizenship documents are flimsy - they’re literally 31 years old and because of some weird bureaucratic quirk I can’t get them replaced or updated. But since I moved here I’ve never been in the PH long enough to get the necessary paperwork to apply for a passport (bureaucracy there is a bit of a nightmare) I’m married to someone with Hungarian citizenship and apparently I can apply for that too after 10 years of marriage. I doubt I’ll do it though, especially since he’s planning to apply for British citizenship this year. We’re settled and very happy in Scotland and have no plans of leaving, so don’t really need the FOM perks.

I adore cheddar - it’s one of my favourite cheeses - and I’m gutted to say that I can no longer have it because something in it triggers my eczema :( weirdly this doesn’t happen with all cheese - just cheddar & gouda. My favourite snack as a child was crackers with cheddar and Branston pickles

I’m from SEAsia and I’ve had both durian and civet cat coffee. I actually dislike durian but funnily enough not for the smell, but because it’s such a creamy fruit & I’m generally not a fan of those (I prefer more sour fruits). Civet cat coffee was fine but nothing mind-blowing imho, although I’m not exactly a coffee connoisseur so my palate might not be refined enough to appreciate it haha

What are some unpopular opinions you have about the uk?

Posted by SH4D3YGUY@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1396 comments

Time_Pineapple4991@reddit

British people - seemingly more than others I’ve encountered - have this problem of going on holiday somewhere, getting the *holiday experience* of the place, before comparing their mundane life in the UK negatively to that. Just because you had a fun vacation in Greece or Southeast Asia or whatever doesn’t mean that life there is vastly superior to here. Signed, a Filipino with Greek friends who all love it here + complain a lot about where we’re from lol Also I find the birthday/Chirstmas/greeting card culture here to be really wasteful. I’d rather give people food or small gifts.

Brits who have emigrated or spent a lot of time abroad, what are some things about the UK that used to seem normal but now feel weird to you?

IDK, the crime rate is way higher in my native Philippines but I do understand what they’re saying about specifically younger people here being badly behaved. When I was a teen I could have never gotten away with some of the things I see teenagers here do - my parents would have given me hell over it lol. But also I never saw the need to be destructive back then anyway? My friends and I would just go to the mall and watch a movie or go to the arcade or something like that

Time_Pineapple4991@reddit

Tbf a lot of the infrastructure in Europe (apart from maybe the South) just isn’t built to cope with heat. In Manila (and I’d imagine in Singapore as well), lots of places have AC so it’s relatively easy to escape the heat. One of my worst heat-related experiences was in Budapest when I was there in the summer. I think it was only 32C or something but there was no fan or AC in the flat I was in, and when getting around the buses and trams were really hot. I got really ill by the end of it haha. Still had an awesome time though

I’m from The Philippines originally. Right now it’s early morning in Manila (not even 7am yet): 27C with 88% humidity. Basically it just feels like a sauna most of the time. I don’t know if your boss enjoys it but I sure as hell prefer the climate in the UK to that. That type of heat is only nice when you’re at the beach and don’t have to do anything.

I’m guessing for the side hose you mean like a bum gun? I have one of those and it’s cold water only, it can be a bit chilly in the winter but otherwise absolutely fine. I’m SEAsian and they are common where I’m from; putting a bidet in is actually the first thing I did when I bought this flat lol. It’s fantastic

Is 32 considered young? Anyway, my last visit was due to me having spotting between periods. They suspected it might have just been ovulation bleeding, but they said they’d do an ultrasound just to be sure. I was warned there would be a wait, but tbh I got everything done and dusted in a month (including results). Thankfully everything’s all fine.

> For some reason, it's bottom of my list of concerns for the day - each weather lends an opportunity for a new experience (and this isn't a conscious decision on my part, just my default, I suppose). Raining? OK, wellies and waterproof on, pick out nuggets of alternative joy versus sunshine - reflections, feeling of refreshment, plants watered (whilst listening to music, on multiple walks with the dog); Sunny? OK, sunscreen and sandals, soak up some rays, sweating my tits off. This is exactly what I’m like, which is probably why I don’t really struggle with the weather here. I check what the weather will be like then plan my day and outfit accordingly. Tbh I struggle more with the wind than with the rain.

Time_Pineapple4991@reddit

Well to be honest I moved here from Southeast Asia and have never struggled with the weather. I absolutely hate heat and I’d be happy to never experience anything over 25C ever again. Not too bothered by the lack of sun either; I find seemingly endless sunny days to feel oppressive and I like variability when it comes to weather. I do wish we got more snow here, though. All that aside, what I will say - speaking as a fellow immigrant who has many friends and family members who are also immigrants - is that it’s quite common to feel depressed about 2 years into the move, and this applies *anywhere*. Like my mum is literally in Florida and has experienced this as well, so it’s definitely not a lack of sunshine in her case. My theory is that 1.5-2.5y into a move, the novelty of a place wears off but you’ve still not been there long enough for it to feel like home, either. It’s basically the awkward stage in moving. It sounds like you’re doing all the right things for your well-being anyway, so unfortunately it’s probably just a case of waiting it out. I was in a similar slump 2y into moving here and started to feel better around the 3y mark.

Yes this was what happened with me as well. My GP initially tried putting the 10 year one in but it just didn’t work lol so I had to be referred to a sexual health clinic for the 5y one. Interestingly my friend (who already has a kid) got the 10y one fine so maybe going through pregnancy makes it easier to insert.

No, I don’t like it when people - close to me or otherwise - comment about my body. I once went down to 89 lbs (just a little over 6 stone) because I was seriously ill, yet that was the time I got the most compliments about my body and figure. It still fucks me up to this day. I can see when I’m gaining or losing weight; I weigh myself regularly, and can tell when clothes are getting loose or tight. I don’t need anyone to point this out to me.

People that have travelled to the USA - What surprised you the most?

Posted by jt9285@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1877 comments

Time_Pineapple4991@reddit

I’d imagine that various states and even places within states would have huge differences between them, and I can only speak to my experience of Florida (which was the only place I went to). It was car-centric to the extreme, and it was only after visiting that I truly understood why Americans say they can’t walk in many places there. My mum lives out there - her house is in a gated community and is surrounded by nothing but other houses. Once you leave the gated community, there’s a 10 lane road and no pavement/sidewalk. You *literally* cannot walk there, even if you wanted to. What’s interesting is that living there for a few years has completely warped my mum’s perspective of distances. Her idea of a “nearby” place is something that’s a 40 minute drive away. I’m a big fan of walkable cities and good public transport so I can’t say I could ever picture myself living there. But the people were very kind and there were some really nice places so I hope my mum feels settled and happy where she is.

What are the best and worst concerts you've seen?

Time_Pineapple4991@reddit

My worst concert experience had nothing to do with the band’s performance (they were excellent), but it was a bad time because of the audience. We went to see Future Islands in Leeds, and some woman there grabbed my husband by the hips and was like forcing him to dance. We ended up leaving early because he was so annoyed. But tbf even before all that the crowd was already kinda annoying. While we were waiting for them to come on some guys around me were having a pissing contest over who the bigger fan was, stuff like that. The vibe just wasn’t great. All my other concert experiences were excellent though, but the ones that stood out were: Rina Sawayama - Great voice + incredible stage presence. I made some friends while waiting in the queue as well which is always nice. Rebecca Black - Yes, of “Friday” fame. Her new songs are great and she’s a fantastic performer. Overall it was just a really fun show. Bombay Bicycle Club - I’ve been a big fan for years and they didn’t disappoint. I saw them not long after they ended their hiatus and it just felt like a really high point for the band overall.

I suppose it depends on what you’re willing to put up with but having to take a bus to the nearest train station isn’t what I’d consider convenient. Transport is a nightmare if you live further out in Fife too (my husband is taking his masters there and has had a lot of problems with this). I guess it’s fine if you’re happy to mostly stay in that area but getting to Edinburgh takes nearly 2h and Glasgow a little over that.

My husband is from Ukraine and most of the people in his area live in Khrushchevkas - each with their own balcony. A lot of the people there have converted the balcony into another room for extra space. I think balconies are great but flats & houses here need to be bigger so that they’re not just wasted space. That said, I think conservatories are more popular here because of the weather anyway.
