Would you count this as tanker experience, without the trailer part?

Posted by akaFxde@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 129 comments

The_Chimeran_Hybrid@reddit

Ah, ya, I was thinking of the hazmat 1k pounds. Didn’t know about the tanker thing being gallons though, that’s neat. Our guys still needed both of them though… we’d sometimes stuff the trailers full of those freaking totes.

Just finished trucking school - driver shortage my a*s

Mmm, personally I think 2 years of experience is too little to really be reaching new CDL drivers, especially if you aim to be local only. There’s an entire side of trucking you’ll never experience if you’re local only, and you won’t be able to pass that knowledge along, because chances are a lot of new drivers do go OTR and regional.

School bus is class B so it doesn’t count for shit in class A jobs sadly. Do you live near grain country? If you do, you should be able to get into grain hauling. Pay isn’t the best though, and hours are long. The entire CDL world is shit honestly. The school I went to for my CDL, they said that when people come back to chat, they discover almost none of them are still in trucking. I’m one of them too, out of it, and not going back in.

Long haul truckers, why?

Posted by mikeyboy1681@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 461 comments

The_Chimeran_Hybrid@reddit

Ok, what roads should trucks use then? All the back roads that are restricted for vehicles over 55k pounds? The state routes where they can back up traffic even more because they’ll get yelled at by their company if they go even a mile over the speed limit, leading to traffic being backed up?

Woman loses eye due to a chunk of ice falling of a Semi and hitting the windshield. I’m curious if truckers are supposed to check for ice before getting back on the road?

When your APU goes out and company doesn't allow truck idle

That’s not to say the independent guys don’t ever get their trailers damaged though. We ran fast, combine that with shitty dockplates, shitty, rainy weather, snow covered dockplates, and wet trailers that have metal flooring, and it does mean that sometimes we find the brakes don’t do anything and we slam into the trailer. We were a less than 10 man crew, with 60 trucks to unload with only like 6 hours to do it, and a million pounds of freight to move on our shift. If you didn’t move fast you’d get swamped.

LTL company, they’re our own trailers. If they gave a shit about their trailers they would have repaired the trailer walls more so they don’t have plastic and metal poking out destroying the freight, or stabbing us as we drive in.

Place I worked at was cheap, the dock doors are wide open, I can climb out of the dock very easily from all of the dock doors, even if a trailer is in there. I lift my forks up and I just ram the metal frame of the trailer two or three times, and on the final ram when my forks are on the frame I floor it to get a bit of leverage on the trailer. I set the brake and hop off, with my forks still pushing the trailer, and that usually allows me to pull the dock plate. Takes 1 minute, versus the 5 or 10 it takes the spotter to come over. I learned it from my supervisor.

*rams the trailer a few times because the driver parked it too close and I can’t pull the dock plate and I don’t feel like waiting for the spotter to come over.* Only takes two or three rams, then I can pop the dock plate.

Ya, there’s some porosity in it, it looks like. They might’ve used the wrong strength of material, because I was told the surrounding material should break before the weld does. They might not have even had any penetration at all, you can put down good looking “welds” that don’t actually penetrate into the original material hardly at all. Like putting glue on the metal.

The_Chimeran_Hybrid@reddit

Either the manufacturer screwed up, or someone did repairs and doesn’t know how to weld. Should find out what repairs were done, if a shop welded that, then they need to know they’ve got legal issues. If it’s the manufacturer, then they for sure need to know too, because that should have been caught.

The_Chimeran_Hybrid@reddit

Ya, looking at those pictures, there’s porosity in the welds, someone screwed up, QA never caught it, this is something the manufacturer needs to know, because chances are, other trailers were sent out like this. For those who don’t know what porosity is, it’s holes in the weld, air pockets. Very bad, not something you want to have.

The_Chimeran_Hybrid@reddit

I went to welding school for a little bit, the welds should never fail before the surrounding material breaks. The fact that these welds did indicates that something was done wrong. If you’re able to find out where this trailer was manufactured, their QA department would very much like to know that happened.

These 2 are constantly harassing people.

Place I worked at, we’d make maybe 150 dollars for 3 loads, would take anywhere from 8 to 10 hours, depending on luck. Another grain place I worked at, I’d make maybe 600 to 700, working 60 hour weeks. Was 1099, knew I shouldn’t have gone for it, but I needed a job. Got out of there as fast as I could.

The vetting system doesn’t seem to be very good, considering that guy who did a u turn and got a family killed had a CDL. Unless there’s new information about that I haven’t seen.
