Dude, for real though. It definitely seems like all of the driver aids are having the opposite effect and making people worse drivers rather than safer ones. It's like they offload all of that care and attention onto the vehicle and don't alter their behavior based on conditions anymore.
I live in the upper midwest and cars in ditches are ubiquitous from like december through march because of stupid assholes driving through the snow just the same as the would on a sunny summer day, often on bald-ass all weather tires.
Im glad I grew up before all that shit, and drove beaters most of my life that didn't even have anti-lock brakes let alone all the other crap. If you know what the hell you're doing and develop a proper feel for the road you don't need any of that bullshit.
I tell people all the time, with the advent of the automatic transmission, smartphones, and bullshit "safety" and convenience features, drivers nowadays don't have anything else to do but be distracted. That last part is a quote from someone else about being distracted so I can't take credit for it
That's what I miss about older semi trucks. Less things to go wrong and less automation. Sure it made things more of a chore at times, but it did help me stay better focused and more awake while driving. Full autos take away alot of the engagement in driving and leave the brain looking for things to do to satiate the boredom on longer trips.
It's called perceived risk. Seat belts and airbags actually encourage riskier behavior in some people, because they incorrectly feel like it offsets their reckless driving, and makes it someone less dangerous.
But we have lawyers and lawsuits. Kind of a no win situation. To the previous post, yes, as an old fart, I see we are surrounded by idiots these days.
Go team orange face.... /s
Look up the McDonald’s case. That woman died from her injuries because the coffee was scalding hot and not a safe drinking temperature. McDonald’s was at fault and they ran a PR campaign to make it seem like she was stupid. She had third degree burns that were so bad that it mutilated her. The coffee spilled in her lap. It’s a hard case to read.
Stella Liebeck did not die. 3rd degree burns not death.
Previous guidelines were to hold coffee at 170-180°, because 150-170° is the best temperature for drinking and it cooks fast once served.
McDonalds was a higher, 180-195°, specifically because it cools fast and most don't start drinking immediately. You get coffee from the drive through, then drive off. It's several minutes before you try to drink it.
I brew coffee at 200° and hold it at 170°. After pouring a cup it's too cold in 10 minutes. For travel unused an insulated cup that will keep it hot for 20-25 minutes.
The thin styrofoam cups McDonalds used were good for ~15 minutes. So starting hotter meant that when you finally start drinking 5 minutes later it's still hot for a while.
It is the physics. If the body is rigid then the kinetic force goes right to the driver because the driver is not a part of the structure. The crumple zones disperse the kinetic energy and dampen the effects onnthe driver.
It is likely the driver will be blamed for this crash. Theyd argue that was unsafe driving conditions and if the driver were not in the road the accident may have never happened.
Sir, this is Europe, we are a sensible over here, if this ends up in the courtroom it will be the minivan driver that is on trail, not the truck driver
I mean, how was anyone supposed to infer that information with the source provided? But equally fair, it is also my shortcoming from not broadening my awareness of trucking outside of US.
I used to work for werner. Have you heard of the "nuclear verdict"?. Texas fined Werner enterprises over $90M when a vehicle in the OTHER LANE lost control, ran through the median, and into the other lane and collided with one of Werners trucks. The prosecutions argument was that the trucker should not have been on the road when there was snow or ice and if they had not been there the collision would have never happened.
I know exactly what i am talking about. In America, drivers are not supposed to drive in unsafe conditions. This means; dense fog, heavy rains, winds 40mph+, snow, etc.
Now, ultimately the decision is the drivers. A driver mayfeel comfortable driving in such conditions. I myself have had to a few times. However, we have to accept the risks. The bigest risk being that in most cases, if we do drive and some accident occurs, the insurance companys, the company you drive for, and DOT will try to place all the blame on the driver. In many cases your own company will throw you under the bus. In the case of werner and the nuclear verdict, they had enough evidence on their side to support the drivers. But that is usually not the case.
All across the country there are attorney billboards saying things like "Injured by a truck? Call [name] @ [number]. Trucking is a huge industry and there is a LOT of money to be made by suing major freight companies.
This is what i meant when i said the truckers shouldnt have been driving in that fog. Not because i believe the accident is their fault, but because i know how crap works here in the states.
What? He's saying it's the trucks fault. It absolutely is not. You don't need to be somewhat where Tatra trucks are common vs Peterbilts to know basic road rules. It's gonna be the same thing pretty much anywhere, you pass illegally and crash, it's your fault, not anyone elses.
This shit right here is why I don't drive when I can't see shit just a few feet in front of me. This kind of stupidity is inevitible, and I'm effectively guaranteed to be blamed if I'm the semi in that instance.
I remember driving in dense fog and this exact situation happened to me. Thankfully I got completely over to the side of the road without going in a ditch to avoid a head on collision but yes overtaking when you can't see a car length in front of you is moron behavior
It wont even have mattered had it been legal to pass due to road marking and signage, never attempt passing anything if you dont have a clear view of whats ahead passed 5 meters.
It's kind of like not driving in snow in March on I-80 in Wyoming. (Which you can't, because the road is closed, because they're busy cleaning up five or six different accidents.)
The driver could have used his trucker magic to looked into the future during his pretrip to foresee this event, but either he his not a high enough level trucker to unlock this feature, or his piss jugs were not full enough to preform the necessary pretrip future sight ritual. Either way driver was clearly at fault.
His door was blown off, but you can see he was kept inside the vehicle because of his seatbelt. Doesn't look like he was crushed or hurt, but the vehicle definitely crumpled. If he didn't have his seats on he would have been thrown out and run over by the truck.
I believe in that area of the country the trucks are limited to 80 mph, 50 mph top. Not uncommon for them to crawl down at speed in harsh conditions, cowboy shit is prevalent in drivers all around the world, but more so in North America due to our society.
Am I the illiterate one or is this a confusing comment?
"...limited to 80mph, 50mph tops." 80 is HIGHER than 50
Also, have you spent time in other countries? Because very very often, the roadway infrastructure and law enforcement is SEVERELY lacking compared to the US. Sincerely my dislocated jaw as a result of a 5 vehicle convoy accident because of an erratic driver trying to squeeze through unsqueezable gaps. People over there will straight up throw it in reverse on the highway if they miss their exit.
"...limited to 80mph, 50mph tops." 80 is HIGHER than 50
I meant kph 80kph/50 mph. Fixed the original.
Freeway infrastructure is definitely Superior, secondary and rural Highway is nearly identical to what's posted. And similar weather conditions, where I deliver vehicles to are often at the end of a stretch of rural highway.
Oops, I also had an error in my comment that I amended. I have not in fact driven in Turkey so I'm not sure what the infrastructure and law enforcement is over there, my bad.
I was literally thinking "well at least this guy knows how to drive in fog" was still caught off guard though. It's unfortunate that no matter how careful you are, there is some terard out there ruining it for everyone.
Fun fact, you can use a phone camera to see through heavy fog! One of, if not the only, good reason to hold a phone while driving!
Even in fog like this, it'll give you a surprisingly clear veiw of the road ahead!
Just pull out a camera in fog for proof. You dont have to be driving. I used to run a lot from Ohio To Pennsylvania and the hills were really bad with it in the morning. Like, 10ft visibility when the speed limit is 70mph. My phone mount sees over the dash and gave me a bit more sight. Its not thermal by any means, but I could see a few hundred feet further. Useful when I dont wanna be so slow that someone smacks into me from behind
I bet within 10 years time the majority of vehicles will be equipped with thermal cameras on the front. BMW and Mercedes did it quite a few years ago but it never really caught on. But thermal imaging sensors are getting a lot better and cheaper so maybe they will come back.
Thanks so much, even in a language I don't understand you can hear the perfect tone of someone in utter disbelief but so refrained, bet the cussing came later
It's actually good thing it happened this way, trucker probably didn't get injured, and if that moron crashed into another 4 wheeler it could have ended bad. I just hope they didn't have any passagers.
Do not pass in fog this thick! I don't care if the person in front of you is going slow. I don't care if you don't "see" anyone coming. Fog this thick prevents you from safely determining situations like this. On a 2 lane 2 way road, do not pass!
People just too impatient and stupid. They really think going around is going to save them so much time, what 5 to 8 seconds? If you're late, just accept it. If need be, make up a traffic excuse or something instead of this stupid result.
Natural selection at its best. I don't empathize with stupid people when they FAFO. Who in the hell would be passing a truck in near zero visibility, wintry/icy conditions on a two lane highway? The idiot had a death wish!
If you're going to do stupid shit like this, commit to it and hurry. I can't stand people who complain about truckers being slow but they're always so slow to pass us.

Vehicles are vastly more durable than they used to be. Just because a vehicle sacrifices itself to save its occupants doesn’t make it inherently bad

The plastic bumpers (considered part of the crumple zone) they use are not more durable that if it were steel
I didnt say bad.. I said less durable

Useful when I dont wanna be so slow that someone smacks into me from behind
aghostofrazgriz@reddit
I bet within 10 years time the majority of vehicles will be equipped with thermal cameras on the front. BMW and Mercedes did it quite a few years ago but it never really caught on. But thermal imaging sensors are getting a lot better and cheaper so maybe they will come back.
CMDR-L@reddit
That would be fantastic. We already have displays with back up cameras, we could easily implement this
driver004@reddit
And how in business terms does that translate to an improvement over the ‘slow down for conditions’ model precisely
TwoToadsKick@reddit
This feels like bait Mr Officer.
serbixwe@reddit
Was not expecting Turkish :D
Deebee707@reddit
Phukn idiot.
Nomadic-Blerd@reddit
At least it was a semi and not a family van.
Carpe____diem@reddit
Now we have a traffic jam in addition.
K-Dog7469@reddit
And probably more collisions.
KrishnaChick@reddit
When "careful" = not idiotic.
3rdSafest@reddit
Why does nobody have their headlights on??
K-Dog7469@reddit
My question as well.
Talesfromthetogue@reddit
Even if he got around that truck he would just be stuck behind the other one a minute later lol.
opinionated_penguin@reddit
Pretty tame by kaotic dot com standards (didn’t want to link lol)
Tobias---Funke@reddit
I was in turkey on a coach and the driver was overtaking other cars on blind bends on a mountainous road for the entire journey.
Efficient_Maybe_1086@reddit
Been there but in Thailand. I wish I ate coals beforehand ‘cause I would’ve shat diamonds.
KayakRaider@reddit
Same. Hired a driver to take us from Phuket to Phang Nga, pucker factor of 36495731522638596950 billion!

Would love a translation... In my mind, it's, "oh, I say old boy, jolly bad form"
Kerplunk6@reddit
Native turkish speaker here.
He's kinda saying like
"God wont give you trouble" OR "God would not damn you" but in a ironic way.
We have a saying
"Allah belanı versin"
which translates to "God damn you!"
But in here he says the opposit but in a ironic way.
Not a translator, so this is the best thing i could do lol.
cardidd-mc@reddit
Thanks so much, even in a language I don't understand you can hear the perfect tone of someone in utter disbelief but so refrained, bet the cussing came later
oneshadeoff@reddit
I'd like to think it's something like "serves you right you stupid fucking cocksucker"
unnamedunderwear@reddit
It's actually good thing it happened this way, trucker probably didn't get injured, and if that moron crashed into another 4 wheeler it could have ended bad. I just hope they didn't have any passagers.
Any_Shopping1633@reddit
Its better to lose one minute in your life than your life in one minute.
leshpar@reddit
Do not pass in fog this thick! I don't care if the person in front of you is going slow. I don't care if you don't "see" anyone coming. Fog this thick prevents you from safely determining situations like this. On a 2 lane 2 way road, do not pass!
EdTNuttyB@reddit
No headlights?
ImagineFreedom@reddit
That also stood out to me. They make you visible in fog and rain regardless of whether it's daylight.
Feuchtebeuchte@reddit
Why need headlights... My dash is fully lit, I can see everything clearly.
B_O_A_H@reddit
Darwinism at work.
heebro@reddit
tbf he was in a passing away zone
Lopsided-Move6309@reddit
If he survived this, I doubt he'll try this again. Probably will have life changing injuries to remind him of how stupid he was this day.
anydamnnamesleft@reddit
Well, that hurt!
Lopsided-Move6309@reddit
People just too impatient and stupid. They really think going around is going to save them so much time, what 5 to 8 seconds? If you're late, just accept it. If need be, make up a traffic excuse or something instead of this stupid result.
BoraInceler@reddit
“Be careful” advise should be “don’t drive reckless”
Balding-Barber-8279@reddit
You can see the driver hanging out of the van at the 20 second mark.
Pretend_Ad_8465@reddit
Natural selection at its best. I don't empathize with stupid people when they FAFO. Who in the hell would be passing a truck in near zero visibility, wintry/icy conditions on a two lane highway? The idiot had a death wish!
Pitiful-MobileGamer@reddit
Visibility in a camera is almost always better than the driver.
Megalodon7770@reddit
There is certain countries where you only survive with tank, maybe.
kingsnow18@reddit
Sheesh
RoosterzRevenge@reddit
Hopefully the truck driver is ok, fuck the idiot in the car.
kingsnow18@reddit

Appropriate-Bat-9686@reddit
If you're going to do stupid shit like this, commit to it and hurry. I can't stand people who complain about truckers being slow but they're always so slow to pass us.
melovemelongtimee@reddit
Glad my company shuts down in bad weather and pays. Not sure if I’d have to drive in that. If we require chains we can’t drive.
Fish-out_ofBowl@reddit
Visibility is down to just a few feet in this fog, and someone’s driving in the opposite lane; what kind of judgment is that?
At some point, you start to wonder if nature really does have a way of sorting things out.
GenX_Leo@reddit
I hope that stupid driver return to the source...
EldestRug@reddit
Just because you can, doesnt mean you should
CraftsyDad@reddit
Bloody hell. The forward momentum of the truck just kept it going, that minivan went from going forward to backwards in a split second
d_ptsdgotme@reddit
What an IDIOT!!! Why in the hell????
Arth3r911@reddit
You know how cold that driver is going to get waiting for another vehicle to get him warm again! Pfff just not fair!
Tonkatte@reddit
