Not all governments recognize or enforce IP laws. For example, China barely enforces any IP laws. Same for India. This kind of IP laws and licensing is a 20th century scam, not everyone has adopted this shit.

Not even 2 weeks of Trump and the wokies are already this mad lol. I'm enjoying every second of it. A few hours ago I was reading the wokies in r/politics discussing if the military would support them if they try to overthrow the government. I was laughing my ass off while reading.

> It's not a dumbed down OS if you know what you are doing Yeah, but we are talking about people that don't know what they are doing. macOS adds lots of annoyances and protections so people don't fuck up, and it doesn't expose many settings in the GUI. I think Apple knows how dumb people can be and more settings equals more money spent on support because people will definitely toggle something and then bring their computers to an Apple Store because the behavior of something has changed and they don't know why.

When you are not in the Steam client it is pretty much Arch Linux with the Plasma desktop environment. SteamOS is not that different from other mainstream Linux distros. Android also uses the Linux kernel but the userspace is very different from a regular desktop Linux install, that's not the case with SteamOS.

Nvidia unveils powerful ARM-based Linux desktop hardware

This is awesome news for Linux! It really feels like we might be entering a new era of better Nvidia driver support on Linux. There’s also been talk about Nvidia working with MediaTek on an ARM chip for laptops, similar to what Qualcomm did with the Snapdragon X Elite. Maybe this $3000 device is based on that chip, or maybe it was always meant for AI minicomputers instead. Either way, if they do drop a laptop chip, it makes me hopeful that Linux support will be top-notch.

Apps like Virtual Box, OBS Studio, Telegram, VLC, Krita, Calibre, Wireshark and KeePassXC are made with Qt. These are widely used across operating systems. Even proprietary projects use Qt (DaVinci Resolve, Spotify, Autodesk). When I think of GTK apps that are this relevant only GIMP and Inkscape come to mind. All the other are smaller projects or projects that are more niche.

There are not many "major" Linux applications using GTK, most of them are made with Qt, I believe GIMP and Inkscape are the exceptions. Apps like Firefox and Blender only use GTK for some decorations and those are "easy" to replace. Many of the apps that use libadwaita and are part of GNOME Circle are already written in Rust. I may be wrong but in my opinion people overestimate how difficult it would be to "replace" GTK. I'm not saying this is definitely going to happen, but I do think it is possible.

I think Canonical will switch to COSMIC by its 3rd or 4th release. They have good relations with System76, and the they are definitely not happy with GNOME and do not share their vision. Canonical is even maitaining extensions that add features that GNOME devs dropped, these features are in COSMIC by default. I'm not saying this is going to happen though, it's just a prediction that may or may not be right.

I do believe that if COSMIC devs keep this pace of development they will surpass GNOME in a few years and COSMIC will become the most popular Linux desktop. If that happens more apps will migrate from GTK to libcosmic/iced.

I don't think there will be a global menu. It doesn't make sense for libcosmic applications because many applications don't have a menu and it is impossible to hide the menu in the ones that do have it. There would be no point since it is imbued in the toolbar with other elements with client side decorations, so if you remove the menu from Cosmic Files for example there would be only empty space in there.

The Donbass region (part of what was known as Little Russia) was part of Russia before the Soviets decided to gift the region to Ukraine. It was never part of Ukraine before the Soviet Union. Russian was always the spoken language of the region since the conquest from the Tartars. When the Soviet Union broke apart there was a referendum in the region and more than 90% of the people voted to be part of Russia, back then Russia and Ukraine were strong allies so there was no desire from Russia to take back the Donbass or sour relations with Ukraine. Ukraine deemed the referendum illegal. Yes, Russia helped financing the separatists in the Donbass and sent people to help but that doesn't change the fact that most of the Donbass population would rather be part of Russia than Ukraine. They speak Russian, Russia was always richer than Ukraine (GDP per capita in Russia was around double than that of Ukraine), Russia was is/was less corrupt than Ukraine and has more prestige in Eastern Europe than Ukraine. I know you are dumb, but you don't need to be that smart to figure that out. Imagine if a Mexican state that the population speaks English, was part of the US for most of its history and was "gifted" to Mexico when Mexico and the US were part of an union that eventually broke apart existed. Do you think they would prefer to be part of Mexico or the richer and more culturally attached to them United States? Donbass and Crimea were Russian provinces that WERE NOT considered part of Ukraine before the Soviet Union.

Ukraine was bombing children in the Donbass before Russia intervened, the Donbass is mostly Russian speaking. You can twist whatever way you want. For the Russians they are the ones defending the Russian people that were being oppressed and killed by the Ukranians since the civil war broke out in 2014. There are always 2 sides of a story.

> After the US took all that Mexican land, did Mexico start a resistance and hopelessly killed American civilians for the lols? no, they accepted the defeat and moved on. The Mexicans signed a peace treaty and accepted compensation. The Palestinians never did that. Btw, by your logic once Russia subdues Ukraine every act of resistance by the Ukrainians would be considered acts of aggression and they would be in the wrong because Russia already "won" and took over control? I guess people fighting in the resistance against the Nazi regime inside Germany back in the day were in the wrong too? I guess Palestinians just need to accept that their country was colonized by the jews and they need to let the Jewish colonists live in peace and accept that they are second class citizens now, or maybe they should beg the jews for more rights in what used to be their own country? If their response to aggression is aggression itself then they are in the wrong, right?

> Sounds like this is your perspective. No, this is the Hamas perspective. They do not recognize Israel as a legitimate state, and in their perspective Jewish occupation is illegal. > But how does that justify anything today? Israel is a UN member and has diplomatic relations with many countries. How does it not exist? So you are saying that if the West break diplomatic relations with Russia and kick it from the UN it ceases to exist or ceases to be legitimate in your view? > how does that justify attacking civilians and taking them hostage? And how would that not justify a counter attack? If China starts a process of mass migration and colonization in the US saying that the people that originally crossed the Strait of Bering were actually proto-chinese so China has a claim to the Americas or something like that. So they start sending millions of Chinese people to the US to quickstart the state of New China, create their own laws, start their own military and so on would you see an aggression from the US against "New China" and their colonists as an attack or an act of defense? For the Hamas it is impossible for them to be the aggressors against Israel because they were attacked first so all subsequent acts are acts of defense and resistance.

There is no Israel, for the Hamas everything there is occupied Palestinian territory. For them Israel is a plot from the UK and the US of jew mass migration to their land to gain a foothold in the Middle East. They do not recognize Israel as a legitimate state and never agreed to a jewish state inside Palestine. How can the Hamas attack Israel if Israel doesn't exist? They attacked an illegal and violent highly organized militia financed by the US and the West. Why are you telling the story from the Jewish perpective? Palestine was already there before the Jews were sent to Palestine after WWII to create a new state.

One issue is that when you have a fullscreen application on one monitor but the focus is on an app on another monitor, the panel appears on top of the fullscreen application. This doesn't happen in GNOME or Plasma. It's really frustrating because sometimes you want to work on one screen while having something like a video playing on another, but the panel interferes by covering it. While there are workarounds, they shouldn't be necessary for something this simple.

I've been using Xfce for years now, but I'm considering moving to Cosmic once it is ready, or maybe I'll do it when they release Cosmic Epoch 2 a year from now. Xfce is fast, stable and I love it but development is very, very slow and the main dev refuses to fix some of the issues I have with it. I don't expect him to code to fix my issues, but other people already fixed the code but he refuses to merge the fix because in his view that is not how it should work because freedesktop.org says so even though GNOME, Plasma or any sensible desktops do not follow freedesktop.org when it comes to this issue.

I disagree. It doesn't matter as much as people think, but package managers, package availability and the software versions in the repositories does matter. I'm an Arch user and I had to switch my personal server from Debian to Arch because I could not stand the way Debian packages stuff and how it makes services automatically start when you install their packages (and they do not have docker in their repos out of the box). I'm also booting a Pop OS VM very often to test Cosmic and I absolutely hate how old the packages are in their repositories because they are missing features I'm used to. Flatpaks are full of issues so I cannot rely on them.

>Have you actually checked the source code for the X server? No. >Because i have and the comparison with Mozilla is *way* out of proportion, the X server is *way* smaller - only around 345k lines of code and that includes the code for XWayland, XQuartz (X for macOS), XWin (X for Windows), a *large* part about device-specific functionality, etc I was not comparing code size. In the case of X server the issue seems to be code complexity. I've seen reports of many people saying it is very, very hard to work with all that spaghetti code that was written decades ago. Wasn't this one of the main reasons why X is being replaced by Wayland?

> There are more people than just Red Hat developers contributing to the X server There is not more **people** contributing to the X server other than Red Hat developers, there is a single person doing that AFAIK. Unfortunately this is not the kind of project that can be maintained by a single person. > Even if Red Hat wants it to die they aren't really in a position of power to do so, the project is open source. Worst case it gets forked to something else (but there isn't really a need to do so). In theory, yes. In practice, nobody is going to maintain it. This is wishful thinking. It's like saying "if Mozilla stops working on Firefox someone is going to pick it up and it will keep going because it is open source", but everyone knows that if Mozilla stops developing Firefox it will be dead. It's not the kind of project that can be maintained by a couple of guys in their free time, it needs a bunch of people working full time on it.

>This is false, the X server codebase is constantly receiving work and updates. This is a 2024 quote from Adam Williamson from Red Hat: >Wayland and X.org are both part of freedesktop. Whatever maintenance is still happening on X.org is mostly being done by people who primarily work on Wayland. AFAIK there isn’t anybody who is actually clamoring to do the work of maintaining X.org upstream. Yes, the X server is still receiving patches from developers paid by a company that wants it dead and replaced. That's a dead project by my standards. But like I said, if people want to keep using it for years to come then I'm all for it.

You can use X for as long as you want to. There are people still using Windows XP so I don't see why you cannot keep using X for years to come even though it is a dead project and nobody is developing it anymore.
