Hello, someone with scarring to his torso here who swims at a leisure centre 3-4 times a week. Trust me, people of all shapes and sizes use the pool and bodies with a bit of character are most definitely welcome.

Do we grow out of watching football?.

I’ve moved around the country a bit, been a ST holder at a few clubs to get my fix. One club started going up the leagues and ‘fans’ en mass started expecting far too much, moaning constantly. Draining, not paying to put up with that. Also Tuesday nights in winter having to sit down all game… hard to find the enthusiasm for that. Now absolutely love when me and mates have a spare Saturday going to watch non league. Beer on the terrace with a pint. Also any idiots and you can just stand somewhere else. Some will say negative things about the standard but it’s great spotting who can really play, hearing the chat on the pitch and that.

What preconception did you have about the UK workplace, that was changed when you entered it?

That people would encourage each other, support their peers and be happy when colleagues solved problems. The negativity everywhere I’ve worked has been has been suffocating at times. That’s not everyone, but there have been enough energy vampires to impact the success of projects and break people down.

What's the most surprising physical pain you have been in?

Chronic nerve pain just after getting Bells Palsy. Completely unexpected, ended up having to take amitryptaline to treat it as it was the only thing that could address the nerve inflammation.

What help can you expect from your trade union?

The support you receive is really dependent on which union you’re in and how well resourced they are for your workplace. Most will have members organised into local branches, and depending on how many members they have in that branch they might be able to afford to employ a caseworker, or have reps seconded full time from their day job. Unfortunately, if your local branch isn’t well resourced you might find there is less immediate support available; some smaller branches will rely on reps using a minimal amount of facility time to support members, and may some of their personal time supporting members (I’ve often found myself in that position). It’s even worse if the branch covers a large geographical area and includes workplaces with a low density of members. I’d suggest finding the contact details for your regional office, emailing or calling them to ask for their support, especially if you say you haven’t got the response you wanted locally and the issue is as urgent as you’ve suggested. Equally, make sure you’re clear and concise when contacting them and ask if there is anything you can do to help them (looking up policies, reading/understanding your contract, that type of thing).
