Why do people choose to have kids that they can’t afford?

Status_Common_9583@reddit

I’m happy to hear you’ve managed to make the time and space for yourself. I’m not even being cheesy but truly you should be really proud! It’s not anyone’s business to weigh in on your life choices but I don’t blame you for going no contact at all. Sometimes it really is the only way to *really* start living. Our childhoods teach us a lot about who deserves to be allowed into our lives as adults when we have a say in that decision making. That’s definitely what I took from the comments too. I actually think it sounds pretty fantastic to grow up in a large family where everyone has at least life’s basic requirements met, so I do understand why many took it that way and assumed that was the kind of home life OP was on about. I suppose I just wanted other people who know veryyyyy well that things get much deeper and darker than just “yay! Big family” to feel seen, hence why I threw my own relative under the bus 💀 I know how it feels to come across a load of comments saying something horrible you’ve experienced is no big deal because they’re not even aware of the true extent of things.

Why do people choose to have kids that they can’t afford?

Status_Common_9583@reddit

Sorry friend! Seems like this is exactly the kind of scenario I was referring to. Air mattresses and couches are not suitable for kids when people completely knowingly have more than they can afford and I can only imagine how hard it is to deal with loving your siblings but feeling resentment about the conditions you grew up in. I hope you’re doing okay these days. In the 2 years since I’ve commented the person I was bitching about now has 8 or even 9 kids, tbh I blocked her because I was sick of her pretending to be a supermum on social media when her kids bedroom looks like a dorm room in a backpackers hostel. Some people really just do not give a flying fuck about the quality of life they can offer the kids, and it’s a cycle.

How to get past Dr's receptionist with embarrassing ailment?

Posted by cankennykencan@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 413 comments

Status_Common_9583@reddit

Yeah maybe triage wasn’t the right word. Probably dealing with level 1: “filtering out total pisstakers” idk. Either way surely they’d want to know what you’re calling for as the doctor is going to have to know if the appointment request is being ran through them for clarification. I don’t think “what does the patient want an appointment for?” “Dunno they won’t tell me” is very effective…

Status_Common_9583@reddit

Yeah it’s not flawless I agree with you. I do think receptionists have to ask though. Decent people who use the GP appropriately might overlook how many pisstakers want an appointment for the most ridiculous things like a singular pimple or a minor hangnail. Pretty sure the main reason receptionists ask is to filter out those kind of people rather than get a detailed explanation about genuine issues lol.

Pretty sure doctor patient confidentiality extends to receptionists within the practise whether we like it or not. I’m guessing they can access your medical information hence why they can call us to discuss specific appointments/share test results etc, plus they have GDPR training. I’d assume their ability to triage is similar to the level a 111 call handler is trained to.

I was too, despite only being slightly above average. Plus I was at the age where I had no agency about what I ate. I wasn’t sneaking food from anywhere, just eating whatever I was given. In fact it was the same people serving me piles of unhealthy food and making sure I “cleared my plate” telling me I need to watch what I eat. Thankfully I was a rude child who wasn’t upset, and actually keen to tell them that actually they’re hypocrites who need to watch what they feed me lol.

I have some friends who had friends but were bullied by others, they said mostly the people who just left them alone and didn’t groan about being partnered up with them were fine and they have no ill feelings about that. I suppose that people who loudly stood up against someone bullying you could’ve felt condescending and insincere if that person then didn’t go on to be particularly friendly with you. Some of the more popular kids at my school did that to seem “nice”, but really it was a swipe at the bully if it wasn’t someone they particularly liked and they didn’t really care about the bullied kid.

What’s an unwritten social rule that more people need to follow?

And the opposite too. If you’re waiting at the first stop on a bus route and know a completely empty double decker bus will be turning up, you do NOT need to smash past the other 3 people waiting and make an aggressive beeline to get on first when there’s 50+ empty seats available. Especially if you’re not even frigging ready to pay for your fare and will be standing there rustling around in your bag to find your wallet whilst still trying to obstruct anyone else getting on ahead of you.

That’s interesting! I don’t think it was an external programme, but I recall having a similar thing happen when I was in school in history, religious education and I think also English lessons. Maybe the “learn the facts and make a good argument to debate about something you don’t necessarily agree with” trickled out of schools if this is something hosted externally. I really liked those lessons actually and benefit from it today where internet arguments are rife haha.

Yup I’m in the same boat with the private experience. Appointments running up to an hour late, work done to a barely acceptable standard, constantly upselling me other shite I don’t even need. Still searching for a private dentist I feel is worth the cost!

I can fully imagine them being a money pit. It only takes one person to make one a borderline biohazard and then you’ll see others take a look inside, immediately come back out and piss at the side of the little building instead. I’d like to think that cleaning public toilets should be the community service punishment for blatant public pissing. My area is like one big toilet with multiple hot spots that stink of piss, and it’s not a case of people getting caught short it’s people who don’t give a damn about where they’re doing it as it’s not remotely discrete. They should be made to clean the public toilets, and then they can also use them!

I’ve had similar experiences with some northerners who don’t agree with me for finding indifference more polite than the examples you’ve shared haha. I’ve never met a person who’s obnoxiously southern if that makes sense… If someone doesn’t have much connection with the north like relatives they visit, frequent work trips etc then I don’t really hear southerners talk about the north/south divide at all unless directly asked. Come across plenty of northerners who are obnoxiously northern though, being from the north is 99% of their personality, banging on about the north and how shit everyone and everywhere else is at every opportunity they get (or make for themselves), “southern fairies” yada yada yada. I’ve just never personally met the southern equivalent of that kind of northerner. Absolutely I’ve met southerners who love their city or town, but not in the “I have to tell everyone I meet who’s not from here right to their face how shit their part of the country is” kind of sense.

I’ve definitely felt this difference! I’m pretty comfortable at 18-19 degrees in other places even as someone who considers themselves a generally cold person who likes warmth. However where I live now… good lord it’s freezing in this old converted house. It has me feeling like a crazy, sickly billionaire setting the heating to 26+ degrees! Unfortunately it’s needed to fight the awful lack of insulation, plus communal corridors have no heating whatsoever meaning the core of the building is like an ice box.

Thank you, you’re absolutely right. I don’t accept it as an excuse as I agree - it’s on everyone to try and break cycles, but I do accept it as a reason that caused it. Easy for me to say, but after childhood she kinda brought the rest on herself. My grandma has done her best to equalise things over the years, especially now she’s in the countdown to being 100 years old but my mum won’t meet her halfway, or even try to talk about thinks diplomatically to judge the response, just goes out of her way to be really horrid. I’m happy enough knowing I’m nothing like her tbh. Thank you again 😇

I got hauled into the headteachers office to be interrogated as to why I’d been nicking paracetamol from the nurses office. They deemed it as so serious they’d already called my mum and I was essentially being held in unofficial custody whilst she made her way to the school to discuss this openly with me, the head teacher and the nurse. The theft occurred during a period where I was in my class and didn’t leave once. Called me mam before even checking with my teacher lol

I’m not projecting I swear! But I’m the one who takes care of everything, never mention it, carries all the weight of it and never complains in my family/social circle. You know your brother best, and he sounds absolutely fantastic, but try to take some of the burdens sometimes even if he swears up and down he doesn’t need or want you to. It’s often a role people slip into, do a good job, and just unintentionally become “the designated go-to person who’ll handle things” forever more. Once you’ve done it for long enough it’s hard as fuck to accept help, no matter how much you want some relief from carrying everything on your shoulders. Or of course I could be totally wrong, because at the end of the day everyone is different. Just some food for thought. I can tell you notice and appreciate everything he does.

This one got me. My grandparents were like this between my mum and her sister. Her sister continues to milk the favouritism to this day (both she and my mum are late 50s) and hasn’t spoken up once about it despite it being glaringly obvious. Feel sorry for my mum tbh, unfortunately it’s turned her into a pretty bitter and horrible person to me. But I understand where it came from.

I use most settings on most things, I think I’ve used the full menu of washing machine settings and I’m always fiddling with the fridge temperature. Even on other small appliances I like to use the full range of features for various usage. This habit began when I got new car and sat down with a coffee to read the entire owners manual cover to cover and realised it had some interesting features and settings I probably wouldn’t have stumbled across naturally. Made me wonder what else I’m missing out on and became a bit of an all round settings nerd lol.

I have a friend like this, and for some reason she also adds the specific ethnicity and/or nationality of every person involved in the story (or her assumption of what it is) even when it has no relevance to anything that happened in the story. Bonus points if there’s an unnecessary description of their outfit, figure or general appearance too. Stories go like “I was on the top deck of the bus yesterday and an Irish man brought his dog upstairs and it tried to eat something out of the Tesco bag the black woman next to me was holding, the black woman was really pretty, and the bus driver who was Indian and bald stopped the bus until the Irish man took his dog downstairs. On the way out the dog jumped up at an Eastern European woman and she screamed, she was also pretty but quite short, wearing nice shoes”. Just tell the bloody story!

I guess the “liquid” part became common here to differentiate from bars of soap, or soap flakes. “Soap” alone tends to suggest bars here I think. I’ve definitely heard people call it dish soap in the UK too, nobody would think it’s odd, but it’s mostly marketed as “washing up liquid” even on the packaging of products so I guess it’s been commonly called that for quite a long time here.

So no need for the tangent about the cultural, economic and political between London and the rest of the UK here

Dunno how true it is, but I took a 10 year break from swimming and was astonished at how unfit I’d become in the pool and needed a reason. Apparently swimming stamina is relatively unique to swimming, and not transferable from general fitness or other sporting endurance ability. I guess being generally fit would be a bit of a boost, but long story short the articles suggested a lot of people are in for a shock about how strenuous it is to really go for it in the water if they’re not frequent swimmers. Like I said may not be wholly true, but definitely rang true for me!

Theres multiple of that type of petrol station within a 5 mile radius of me in London. Guess it’s regional variations but I’m surprised you’ve *never* come across a wild bean cafe petrol station before. I assumed they’re pretty common. Ours even has a milkshake making machine, not that I’d want petrol station milkshake. Pretty hard to mistake the petrol stations I use every week in inner London for actually being motorway service stations, but took a peep out my window to be extra sure I haven’t gone loopy and I’m happy to report back that I can indeed still see red buses going past 😂

Ah, I think you’re replying to a different person my friend! Many corner shops here don’t have any fresh produce but some do depending on the shop/area. There’s several dotted around that have a fruit and veg stand at the front for example. Tesco express is a different category of shop, especially in a non-residential area. They’re designed to be mini versions of supermarkets (other supermarket chains also have them) that sell a varied but obviously massively reduced range of stuff to fit in a limited space. Generally they’re more expensive than the full sized version of whatever brand supermarket it is. There’s another category of corner shops, mostly found in residential areas. For this type of shop “corner shop” is just used interchangeably with “newsagent”, depending on age/regional variations etc. They might be a franchise of a branded chain of corner shops, or they might just be a little totally independent corner shop. Some have nothing fresh at all, others have a fridge with some stuff like milk, cheese, butter, readymade sandwiches plus a few other bits like bread and eggs but people often have strong opinions about actually utilising corner shops for that haha!

I’m not talking about the petrol station shops that have a wild bean cafe and toilets inside, or the ones where it’s a tiny M&S. I’m talking about run of the mill petrol station shops that are a Londis or just a nondescript shop name. They are literally just a corner shop attached to a fuel station. Both petrol station shops and standalone corner shops are used very similarly to how the comment describes US/Can convenience stores (before they edited their comment, lol)

Thats exactly what a corner shop is to us too, lol. Even down to the part about frequently being attached to petrol stations. They’re for snacks, soft drinks, alcohol, cigs and we’ll buy the occasional reluctant but necessary overpriced long life food item or household product. Pasta, salt, washing up liquid, toilet roll, that type of stuff. People in the UK do not do their normal food shopping in corner shops.

He volunteered himself up to be the person who’d squash pointless timewasting when the meetings had realistically concluded by saying he really needs the toilet and started gathering his things to leave before even waiting for a response. His best work was “sorry to rush off like this, but I’ve got to make ways now to get to my next appointment in the second floor toilets on time.” Someone implying they’re running away for a dump brought meetings to an immediate ending.

I found an American tiktok creator sharing her dental makeover journey and explained that her condition made her teeth so weak that they cannot even withstand regular brushing. They were just slowly crumbling away until she could afford to pull them all out and get dentures.
