Parents - when did you decide it was ok to be selfish and buy a sports car?

I got one last year. $8k for a 2012 BMW 128i from a BMW dealer, clean 2 owner car It’s preppy enough, sporty enough, luxurious enough and can actually seat 4 reasonably (3 Series is even more practical) and I know I’ll sell it for damn near what I paid. I wouldn’t go dropping $80k on some new mess, but a $20k to my is completely acceptable since it appears you have your other finances in order.

It’s interesting as Buick has been putting out some really great looking stuff lately. I’m a diehard German car guy for 20y now and I have friends in the industry so I usually buy my car direct from my buddy who’s a GM, but I’d def give them a shot if I was shopping for domestic vehicles. I LOVED the wagon they did a few years back.

About time. I have bought 2 brand new cars in the last 3 years and ruled out a lot of candidates for having CVT. I don’t need a manual, but I do need manual override and something that doesn’t hover at a 2 rpm bands at all times. The cvt cars I’ve driven in the past 5 years seem to have an idle vs WOT gear selection and it just bothers me.

I’m agreeing with you, I’m saying China historically was a little behind some other countries as lots of exporters were entering the US market by focusing on price but as the stigma of “Chinese = crap” is reducing, and their modern products are often as good if not better in some categories. China have not taken their foot off the gas like a lot of American companies, who have focused on cutting costs and R&D to allow for the minimum sustainable innovation investment to maximize shareholder profits. China is dead set on taking the controlling position in the global financial economy from the US and EU and they’re well on their way. it feels somewhat inevitable at this point, at least from spending time over there and seeing the technological integration from cars, infrastructure, phones, banking, etc.

Yeah, people seem to forget that as companies make profits they can invest in improving their products and start offering more upscale items. Korea did it over the last 30 years with cars and TV’s and personal electronics. China is basically doing the same thing now.

My cousin had a setup that if he pushed the side mirror power adjustment arrow it closed a relay and allowed the car to start. Was a pretty good one. But you had to make sure you didn’t have the mirror selector on left ir right because then it moved your mirrors. I’d say find an optional button for your car you don’t use and install it as a trigger to a relay to the starter circuit.

Chinese-made vehicles now make up 20% of Mexican car sales

I think the problem is people say cheap, that connotes cut corners or poor quality. They build them inexpensively at high quality and that’s the threat. Even if you bumped them 50% and they made the same margins as the big boys, they’re still gonna be a threat. It’s the same reason I buy German over American. My wife and I both bought new cars in 2007. My Jetta had brake pads and a high pressure fuel pump issue in 5 years 120k miles. My wife had a Chevy cobalt and gas rear struts, a steering column linkage, front and rear brakes, and rotors, had to be aligned multiple times, and just rattled and was full plastic in 80k miles.

Yeah, my point being China is creating and implementing the tech that all the major brands are trying to replicate at this point. It’s already here and it’s not expensive. Meanwhile, the USA is being served subscriptions for heated seats and self driving. All their cars have the hardware just like the subscription cars except they’re not nickel and diming you. They sell it loaded and it saves money. They’re streamlining their manufacturing for a lower cost of production to avoid just in time in inventory and bespoke customization of orders.

I know from a mechanical standpoint they’re only improving, but I worry about some of the really fancy tech like the motorized. Components, air ride, suspension (I used to work at Jaguar Land Rover and I know airbag suspension can cause issues with control, arm, bushings, and the bags themselves leak which leads to very costly repairs etc) just stuff like that. It’s the same issue that you face in a luxury Mercedes, BMW, Audi. If has this technology ages and they make maintenance reason, reasonable, again I think they’ll be unstoppable.

I’m in China right now, and I will tell you all of the newish Chinese cars I have sat in in the last two weeks have an exemplary build quality and finish and the tech is unbelievable. Obviously we don’t have the data to know how they’re gonna handle 10 years down the road, but I think that’s a risk with all EV’s. But I will tell you that they are doing something special and anyone who tries to dismiss them as “Chinese crap“ is going to be in for a very rude awakening as they continue to penetrate these markets. Also watching the news here they have signed three major deals in the last two weeks for trade. They’re already selling vehicles in central in South America and Europe and Australia. It’s just a matter of time until, like you said, it’s gonna be Japan on steroids.

I’m in Shenzhen China right, went for a 90 minute drive round trip in a LI Auto L7 and this is so so true, even if we added duties and fees to make the the same price or more than our current options, the tech and comfort feels a decade ahead. Here is a YouTube review but I’d put it on par with a Mercedes GLE from a passenger experience. https://youtu.be/v9EdyDqMaNU And we went to a showroom and the other standouts were the Xiaomi YU7 Max Michelin Pilot Sports and massive Brembo brakes, and one of the SICKEST innovations for display where it’s a HUD projected at the base of the windshield in a way that it looks like it’s a OLED inside the dash. It’s hard to describe. But they show it here briefly, they do a black line on the glass so it reflects unbelievably bright and looks sunken way into the dash. Here is a 1 min video on it https://youtube.com/shorts/F-mjuh4CsCQ

I say it in the sense of low cost/high value is not the same as “cheap“. Chinese goods have historically been “cheap” IE low cost and low quality, but over the last two decades and improvements in global manufacturing, quality has continued to increase and has equalized against most of the major manufacturing countries People want an Amazon experience, they are less likely to be won over by TEMU for something that costs tens of thousands of dollars If a car is $30,000 but it’s in the shop for three months of the year, it’s not a good value proposition, they’ll definitely sell some, but they’re not going to steal half the market. But on the other hand if they have the quality of a Hyundai and cost 15% to 20% less, that’s a good value proposition and it’s inexpensive and in turn, they will gain market share.

Cheap=/=inexpensive Americans want good value and inexpensive cars. If China offers a car with the fit and finish of a $50,000 car for $30,000, it’s gonna sell and if they don’t fall apart and have adequate aftersales support , they’ll own the market in 5-10 years.

Wagons are more fuel efficient than SUV’s right now with virtually the same interior space. They just aren’t popular. Better fuel economy keeps gas cheaper and cleaner air. It also means we’re at less risk of market instability by doubling fuel economy. It’s just a bunch of stupid “I’m old and don’t under things so the old way is better cuz I know it better” Nothing more.

Even in China, it’s still about a 1y lead time on average for a quality made product, you can improve a supply chain in 6-9 months but 1y is a reliable and quality validated supply chain switch. (I work for a global manufacturer with manufacturing in Vietnam and China) Yeah it’s why America doubling the prices of imports and demanding “we make it here” with no transition plan was the stupidest and least educated policy decision I’ve seen in a LONG time. It’s 1-2y if you already have warehouses, distribution, assembly lines and staff to manufacture. Without that we’ll be lucky to see an impactful uptick in manufacturing before the 2028 elections. In the meantime we all just pay 30% extra for living while corporations continue unaffected and mom and pop stores die off.
