We went to watch Dunkirk in the cinema as a family whilst my dad was receiving palliative care for aggressive terminal cancer who was a quiet man at the best of times but was even more introspective towards the end of his life. He bawled his eyes out to that scene in the cinema, and the rest of us duly followed, cue a whole row of us crying simultaneously with him ha. It took me 3 years before I could bring myself to watch it again, but it’s a brilliant film, the cinematography is beautiful, and that scene gets me in floods every single time.

I’m in insurance and have friends and acquaintances in the fine art and specie side of things who have said it will only get worse as the continued push for repatriations etc. continue, especially as it’s quickly becoming a good political football to kick around when your polling badly or need to distract everyone from your economic policy reforms etc. etc. Not surprised either that some of the big name auction houses are linked with this, they’ve absolutely filled their pockets for many many years by selling such items with a less than crystal clear history. (I’m all for rightful ownership btw, but good luck tracing back an “honest conversation” between a foreign empire and a local craftsperson from 1652 or the like!)

Why are there so many streets with West in the name but barely any streets with East in the name?

I was being driven home from school by my dad who told me in a way quite suitable for a ten year old boy listening to the radio. We’d won the 2012 Olympic bid 20 years ago today (6/7) and I had curiously accused the French for their bitterness because Paris was a strong favourite to win the hosting.

Without Googling, do the names Rommel, Montgomery, Paulus, and Dönitz mean anything to you? And roughly old are you?

30YO and knew all of them, but not in great detail…here’s my summary of how much I can remember… Rommel - Enjoyed his time in Africa Montgomery - Thought he was leader of British army during European theatre and D-Day. Known for being an outdated awkward man who bodged Operation Market Garden’s plans???? Also fell out with Patton during race to Berlin I think? (Turns out it was Eisenhower who also didn’t really get on with Monty.) Paulus - German commander during Stalingrad and famous for surrender of 6th army. Donitz - Recognised the name but couldn’t think what his role in WW2 was. Honestly very chuffed with my knowledge, British lad so Montgomery was easy, and I’ve read a few books on Stalingrad so Paulus was the most familiar non-native.

Did anyone else go 'scavenger hunting' under arcade machine in the hopes of finding dropped change?

Absolutely! Bonus points for finding coins from the wrong machines I.e 10ps rejected in the 2p machine. Fair game in my books…especially where the machine has dropped its load between visits, then it’s spoils of war.

This is a Mark C Bond MiniCar built between 1952-1956, with the registration ending EMV suggesting a 1955 registration which would match the dates of other pictures. EMV was utilised by Middlesex county council that year which would’ve covered most of Greater London at the time so matches up with their wedding in Watford.
