Why cheap Monitors use HDMI instead of DP?

Posted by hyenagames@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 200 comments

Robborboy@reddit

I think the funny part is that HDMI has a licensing fee. But is so ubiquitous it is cheaper to pay that fee than to use a different port.

What’s with these new amd chips with the X3D in the name?

What’s with these new amd chips with the X3D in the name?

Robborboy@reddit

3 times is irrelevant to the x3D monicker though. Sure it is a happy coincidence. But it has no bearing on the name. Even if it is 5 time the cache, it would still be x3D.

Robborboy@reddit

....wat x3D means the cache is stacked instead of side by side. As in the cache is 3D. This allows the CPU to access the cache *much* quicker than than traditional, flat, cashes.

For real.  According to PC Partpicker mine is roughly 2600USD. With *only* the RAM adjusted back down to the price I originally paid, it would be closer to 1800USD. Shit has gotten insane.

Is 16GB of vram not enough? And a question about the monitor (1080р/60Hz => 1440p/144Hz)

Posted by Badorik@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 10 comments

Robborboy@reddit

12GB VRAM was plenty for me in my 7700xt. Got a 9070xt with 16 and it just feels more future proof, the card itself being faster notwithstanding.

Are internal PSU monitors better than the external power brick ones?

Posted by WriterStrict4367@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 6 comments

Robborboy@reddit

External power supply is better in that if/when the PSU dies, you simply buy a new one instead of gutting or replacing your monitor. They can also be quieter depending on the cooling solution it uses because you cna out the brick somewhere that's not in your face like the monitor is.

What do you think of my build?

building PC is such anticlimax

Posted by Ornery-Extension5402@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 7 comments

Robborboy@reddit

Sounds like you set yourself for disappointment. Upgrades should be done for a specific reason, not just because they can be.  If you have that reason, and solve it by your build or upgrade, it is great.  I just upgraded to a 9070xt and it is as magical as when I originally built the PC last year.

Does anyone work in or for a data center and knows the prices at which they buy RAM modules? I'm very curious as to how much 32gb costs for them, vs for the rest of us plebes. Is it cheaper or is it the same price?

Worth noting that Samsung is also competing with itself for RAM with internal departments being denied requests because it is going to other companies instead.

I'm using 4 sticks of 16gb, CL30@6000. Can't say I've ran in to anything that makes me go "Golly, I sure wish I had gotten CL36. Geewizz" I mainly game and do some video rendering and modeling for 3d prints.

When did it get so expensive?

Will there be any negative impacts in using all 4 dimm slots for gaming?

Posted by PuzzleheadedNote3@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 16 comments

Robborboy@reddit

It'll vary. Some mobos have issues with 4 DIMMs, some do not. I'm using a Gigabyte B650M Aorus Elite AX ICE with 4 DIMS of 16GB, and getting the 6000 I should be.

Air India Flight 171 Crash

Can RAT be deployed while turbines are still firing? Possible they may have enabled it in a panic when it was needed?  Or are there safeties to prevent such a thing?

Fucking good pilots those. Be safe with the lives you're in the care of.  Likely had days of paperwork to fill out for grounding the flight to boot.

If only we could get stand alone spin offs of things like NotD. That shit was my jam. Closest is CoD Zombies I guess, but not really the same scale and threat.

First build after 12 years a 4690K

Posted by Robborboy@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 5 comments

Robborboy@reddit (OP)

Sorry about the delayed response. Night and day difference.  The 7700XT was tied to both the 4690k and the 9800x3D Couple of ny examples: Helldivers 2 went from a pretty playable experience. 1080p, 60fps. Doing 1440p 120 now.  Stalker 2 was flat out unplayable, and now I have a smooth 60fps at 1440p. Kinda bummed I already finished it on the Series X lol.  VR is another place I noticed some improvement, despite it typically being GPU bound.  VTOL VR for example went from 50-60fps on the ground to pretty much solid 72. I don't have a measurement for Contractors VR, but I do know some of the busy modded maps like Star Wars Battlefront, Halo, and Warhammer gave me *noticeable drops*, which are all gone now. Same with hitches.  I will say most uplifting will likely be on CPU-heavy, flat games. Though if your GPU is better than mine, easy to do, you may notice even more.

Would the 7800x3d be the next best option for the 9070XT if the 9800x3d is not available or overpriced?

Watch Newegg. I was in the same boat. Then saw one come in at MSRP and pulled the trigger.  Otherwise, yea the 7800x3D will still be great for ya.

Low FPS on games like Marvel Rivals and Fortnite at lowest settings.

While I do follow the news, also this. Last PC I built was 11 years old by the time I built my new ones a couple months ago.  I had to do a solid month of research to get reoriented to what was what.

How much have you spent on your setup, in total?

Posted by Spirited-Standard-33@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 765 comments

Robborboy@reddit

$479.99, 9800x3d $309.99, XFX 7700XT Qick 319 $200, 64GB RAM $90, Fractal Pop Mini Air $219, Gigabyte B650M Aorus Elite AX $119, MSI MAG E250 $70, LG MDdisc/DVD/BD/CD Read/Writer Reused the $100 ThermalTake Toughpower 750w Gold PSU from my last build. Also reused my $150 of SSDs from the last build too. So if you include the reused parts, $1737.98. But man did it not feel like that much given I bought the parts over a time span of a year and a half.

GPU Thermal Pads?

Posted by Robborboy@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 7 comments

Robborboy@reddit (OP)

You bringing up machinist blocks reminds me I do have some blade-type feeler gauges used for the valves on my motorcycle... Not wanting to reuse the old pads is pretty much my whole hang up. Just in case I just happen to play something in the next couple days lol. Didn't think about an owners forum for it. That's a good call. Thank you!

GPU Thermal Pads?

Posted by Robborboy@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 7 comments

Robborboy@reddit (OP)

Oh yea, not the core. I have time Thermal Grizzly Kyronaut for that  And yea, memory for sure. Can see well enough to tell if any VRMs are interfacing with the heatsink or not. Last time used thermal pads/puddy was probably back on an old ass ATI for passively cooling something lol. When you say measure, is there a practical way to do so? I'd imagine their thickness would be stretched out from removing the heatsink but I could easily be wrong. A caliper maybe?
