We have been here 46-61 years. Would you rather be told you have 3 years left to live or die suddenly out of nowhere?

Despite what we’ve been taught, I think time is the most valuable thing we have. It doesn’t matter how hard we work or how much money we have, it’s finite. There’s no buying, earning, or begging for more. Not knowing how much time I have left makes it feel more precious; it underscores the importance of being present. I don’t want to know, just beam me elsewhere when it’s time.

Yup. World’s Finest Chocolate is big in the high schools here. It’s $1 a bar or $60 for the whole box. They don’t keep all the money; many student clubs use them to fundraise.

You are not the only one. I am 57 with a graduate degree. Currently, I am working three jobs, none of which pays more than $22 an hour. I work 68 - 92 hours a week. Two divorces decimated me. Yeah, checking out has crossed my mind. My reasons for getting up in the morning include not screwing up my kids with the fallout, and the knowledge that life is cyclical. In the 90’s, I was on top. Then my child died suddenly, and my life fell apart. My spouse and I couldn’t hold it together, and after foreclosure and a repossession, we declared bankruptcy. Two years later, we divorced. He moved across the country, leaving me with three amazing kids under five. Then, I got a great job, met a new person, and was on top again. More life, another divorce, and I am hustling alone now. I know if I hang on long enough, I’ll be on top again. Good times always follow bad. Every month, I struggle to pay my rent and feed my son. My advice is to find someone you can help. It doesn’t have to be financial. It can be two hours a week volunteering. It can be listening to someone vent. When you are focusing on others, you can’t dwell in your pain..Sometimes, just a different perspective makes a difference. You got this, and if you don’t, DM me.

I worked a lot and was fairly compensated. My company let me keep my frequent flyer miles and had hella perks. I felt like a person, and 90% of the time, I was treated with respect. It’s a huge difference from today.

I’m 57, and had my first at 31 and my last at 39. He’s 18, and the only one still home with me. I am so glad I had my kids later, although wasn’t always fun being the oldest class mom. Now, I love how my kids keep me updated, no cap. 😁

It is so stupid, because we all enjoy the feeling of helping people we love, but we’re denying them that same experience. I have been thinking about this phrase - Toxic Independence - all day. It’s the undertone of so many of my interactions, and I am starting to feel like an AH. How many times have I refused to let someone reciprocate after I did something for them? How many times have people saw me flailing, and I would not let them help? Ugh. It’s just a selfish way of thinking. It doesn’t foster any kind of connection, communication, or growth. Damn if there’s not a lot of crap to keep unpacking…It’s a good thing we’re indestructible, because this might take a minute.

This is such a trademark of our generation and it DOES hurt us. How many times do we sacrifice ourselves and things we NEED because we would need help to do them? I have been putting off a follow up colonoscopy because I don’t want to ask anyone to drive me. It’s truly a warped way to live.

I’m stealing “toxic independence.” It’s the perfect phrase to describe why we make our own lives more difficult. Toxic independence. We were taught not to be weak and needy, that we can and should do everything for ourselves. I’m not sure it is to our benefit, though. This phrase gives me a lot to think about. Thank you.

Big believer in vaccines here, but I had three rounds of shingles, before I was eligible for the shingles vaccine. I could not wait to get it, but after the first shot, I knew there was no way I was taking the second one. I take valacyclovir daily now to keep shingles at bay. I have never had such a violent reaction to a vaccine in my life.

My kids had three rules: play an instrument, learn a language that isn’t English, and stay on the honor roll. If they did those things, I told them everything else was negotiable. So, when my 16 year old wanted to have a coed slumber party, it came time for me to walk my talk. Turns out, there was nothing to worry about. The young men went to sleep in the den at the agreed hour with no issues at all. The next year, same child revealed they were dating same sex best friend. The friend had been sleeping over for years anyway, so it wasn’t an issue for me. It’s been a decade and they are still together.

I taught a community college for a few years, and hands down my favorite students were returning learners. They were the students who really wanted to be there, and they had great questions having been in the working world for a minute. Don’t drop! I’m in Scottsdale, and you will be amazed at how much college has changed. Give yourself a chance to get into the groove again. Mingle with your professors. Guide younger students. You have so much to gain and give. I hope you feel inspired and know how courageous this is. You got this! 💪🏻🙂💕

Same background. Distant father, frequently drunk and abusive. Mother hated him and me. My father was a dedicated founder of a non-profit. He was a solid provider - I never wanted for anything, besides positive attention. When the first boy to ever bring me flowers turned out to be a handsy asshole, I was devastated. The next day, Pop came home from work with roses for me. I remember him telling me there were plenty of men who would bring me flowers, and to always be able to look myself in the eye. I must have been around 17…

Posted by MovingTarget-@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 1570 comments

It can’t be coincidence. I just came home from work bitching like a lunatic over people who have absolutely NO phone manners. When I receive a call, say hello, and hear “who’s this?” I want to hang up immediately. Fortunately, my standard response of, “Who shall I say is calling?” gets things back on track, but ugh. The 18 year old who still lives here looked at me like I was an overreacting nut job. However, I remember my parents made me practice phone etiquette, and know I did with my children as well. Ring, Ring. This is X calling from ABC, may I please speak with Y? This is she…

I topped out at 229 in 2018 - age 50 - and had NO IDEA how big I was. I’m 5’ 1”. After my second divorce, I got motivated and lost 90 lbs (300, if we count him). I’m turning 57 this fall, and workout at least five days a week. Nothing strenuous, no weight over 15 lbs, but I’m absolutely not going back to being that heavy again. MoveFree is a lifesaver…

CNN. Atlanta. 1992. Office workers had Macintosh computers - the kind with the monitor built in and a drive in the front. New hires had to sign a non-smoking clause; tobacco use could cost your job UNLESS you were grandfathered into the exemption. My boss was such a person. Walking into her office was like entering a blue, carcinogenic haze…

The effort invested doesn't dictate the end result. Sometimes, you can put 150% of everything you have into a project, job, or relationship, and through no fault of your own it doesn't work out. Getting rid of that disillusionment was critical for me. Letting go.

San Diego at my sister’s little beach apartment we affectionately called “Barbie’s Playhouse.” My daughter should have turned two that day, but she passed four months earlier. The husband and I drove out the day before, because we just didn’t want to be alone with our grief. My sister woke us from sleeping on her pull out sofa by turning on the television. We watched in disbelief as the second plane hit. It sounds terrible, but I knew that I would never be alone in grieving on September 11th. Mere days before my 32nd birthday, September 11, 2001, remains one of the most surreal days I have ever had. The skies were silent. The grief and disbelief will always remain a memory. I don’t think it increased my grief, but I think the timing influenced how deeply I felt. I wasn’t comforted, but I also wasn’t alone in my sadness, if that makes sense. It was a bizarre sensation of mournful community. She should have turned 25 today, but there were so many “should have” moments that disappeared in an instant. It’s still stunningly horrific.

I know this is a bit lame but it made me chuckle. 🍷Red, red wine...

Athens, GA, college town, a few years after the ‘83 release, Thursday nights, shooting pool, and running my mouth until I realized what song was playing. This was second only to David Allen Coe’s “You Don’t Have To Call Me Darling” for unofficial drunken karaoke. I used to come in around… Stay close to me Don’t let me be in love It’s tearing apart (elongated depending upon inebriation level) My blue, blue heart… [old GA sings “ mah bleeeww, bleeww hart”] Afterwards, I hopped on my T-rex and rode away. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Feeling kinda old. 😵‍💫😂

My parents were OLD - silent generation. They were 28 and 35 when I was born. My father took me to see Jaws in the theater when I was seven. His mother took me to play bingo at the VFW one night when I was nine (1977). I remember wondering if her hair acquired the blue tint from the smoke. My mother was grossed out by the smell, and that was the end of it.
