Why is being cold at home so normalised in the UK?

Posted by Automatic-Key-3798@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 3015 comments

QuakerGeorge@reddit

Perception of cold varies massively and of course at different ages and weights you feel it more or less. Consider that you may be used to an excessive level of artificially created heat.

What level of healthcare waiting times would you consider to be reasonable?

What did I say that ever suggested there wasn’t a distinction? Lobbyist relationships don’t mean every single decision or report goes in their favour. It does mean that on matters of serious and sweeping reform their voices are heard however, and they should not be heard as they have a singular interest.

It is not, an 'independent' organisation accepting funds from GSK clearly highlights a particular openness to their business practices. No one pays for anything without expecting something back. I have worked in this industry, it is well known just how 'independent' these think tanks are.

QuakerGeorge@reddit

A think tank that works closely with pharmaceutical companies and private healthcare thinking there needs to be more upper management is not wholly surprising.

It completely depends on what it is, but we shouldn’t accept the current situation. The NHS is being underfunded and wasting billions on useless upper management. The ‘foreigners’ are correct.

The inability to disagree without being personal or insulting someone. Attached to that is the inability to understand that disagreement isn't a personal attack in and of itself.

When did people stop going to church?

Posted by Far_Acadia_2053@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 870 comments

QuakerGeorge@reddit

A lot of Catholic churches were full of young Eastern European migrants not so long ago. I have my faith and try to attend every week when I can but there is no denying the fact people are finding sustenance in other things. The consequences of that are positive and negative in my opinion.

Really your country is an outlier here. To all Europeans saying you can’t imagine walking half an hour sounds completely insane and it’s a massive contributory factor as to why Americans are as large as they are.

QuakerGeorge@reddit

Generally Brits are much less on top of eachother, yes. The concept of being ‘good at texting’ isn’t one I’ve encountered. To me being good would mean being interesting and engaging, not just relentlessly spamming people with chat.

QuakerGeorge@reddit

You would be surprised. Most people who have kids and a busy job don’t like overly needy friends that need constant reassurance. Good friends understand people get back to you when they can and don’t flood them with messages because they struggle with silence.

Why do a lot of people insist on not washing their hands in the UK?

Posted by ohnoitsbobbyflay@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 18 comments

QuakerGeorge@reddit

Most’ is nonsense, some do not. I’ve never waited in a men’s toilet for 5 minutes in my life. It tends to be a fairly swift production floor.

Why are house numbers so weird?

Posted by elferson@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 55 comments

We were one of the first countries to have numbered addresses and a lot of the roads were designed and built centuries ago. That leads to some curious numbering patterns. It is what it is.

I meant more in terms of having a conversation that is genuine and not just passive chit chat. A lot of lodging situations are like this. It’s best to not lodge if you don’t want to occasionally do that.

The NFL claims that 3.7 million Brits watch the superbowl, does that make sense to you?

Posted by Ready-Nobody-1903@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 63 comments

QuakerGeorge@reddit

I don’t watch it, but it does seem gradually more popular with certain people (for instance amongst my friends who watch rugby league). Twenty years ago almost no one would have any interest in it.

That’s very rude. You seem to misunderstand that I know exactly what you’re referring to, but you are simply wrong. Being a loyalist does not make you British, that is a political distinction.
