Why are so many functioning adults desperate to get a diagnosis of autism or ADHD?

My mum just got diagnosed with autism at 51 and now with support, the mask had slipped away, she can be more herself but also now realises JUST how much effort so many things were taking from her before. She can now adjust her life and will almost certainly live longer with the relief from the unknown stress of masking. I was diagnosed with ADHD at 27. First class masters etc. Medication has changed my life, as has un-masking.  You dont sound like a good friend.

How to get my GP to take me seriously?

When one GP dismissed my out-of-lab-range TSH and T4 thyroid bloods test results as normal enough (despite severe fatigue and shortnes of breath) I asked for a second GP opinion. The second GP agreed to give me another blood test 6 weeks later, and the thyroid results were even worse. Diagnosed as a lifelong thyroid condition and have been stable on replacement hormones for over a year now.  If you truly think the blood test suggests a disease/deficiency etc, book in with a GP and being notes on your symptoms and reaosning. You can always ask for a second opinion.

Why do so many Brits wear tracksuits, leggings and other kinds of sportswear?

Intetesting that theres so amny comments on comfort, I (F) genuinely find a pair of wide leg, light-weight smart trousers more comfortable than joggers ... elastic doesnt agree with my tummy or ankle area and I don't like the look of pull strings. I dont wear leggings outside other than for sport due to being ogled before (even catcalled whilst on my bike once)

Idk the relevance of bringing up the Kickstart Scheme here (assuming it's that). I did the scheme in the Civil Service and got the job once it ended, knew 2 others who did the same. It's the pizza person who is the problem, not their socioeconomic standing or the chance they were given. Most of us were on benefits post-Uni during the thick of 2021 Covid looking for our first job/break. Sorry if this relates to some other scheme but point still stand imo

How long are you gone for work each day?

My time at the office is 8 hours (7 working, 1 for lunch). If I use a bike/hire scooter my commute there and back is roughly 30 minutes. If I walk my commute there and back is roughly 1 hour 10 minutes. So a maximum of 9 hours 10 minutes spent on commute/work. Way better than my last job where I had to rely on the bus, which was at the very minimum a 10 hour day.

Is working 12-hours a day for a good salary normal?

Dude this is easily within the top 5% of salaries in the UK, would reccomend using this tool to put it in comparison: [https://ifs.org.uk/tools\_and\_resources/where\_do\_you\_fit\_in#tool-results-section](https://ifs.org.uk/tools_and_resources/where_do_you_fit_in#tool-results-section) Minimum wage is less than a quarter of this. People on minimum wage see £50k as insane money. People in London live on minimum wage/less and survive. Just some context bc this IS insane money, especially to be making alone. Peace.

What is the worst "mid-life crisis" you have seen?

I'm a lesbian and used to do some local gardening volunteer work. Absolutely loved it until one of the founders/main coordinators started trying to get it on with me. I was 23 and he was 35 with a gf of 10 years and lived opposite the gardening spot :/ I spoke fairly frequently about my latest crush/situationship with a woman but i guess that was barely another obstacle to him. Had to block him and stop going :(

What purchase made you realise that you're finally out of poverty?

Paid £600 for private dental work at the beginning of this year (hadn't gone since 2020). I'm still definitely scrambling for money (disabled so can only work part time, but not disabled enough for PIP apparently) however my partner's family is wealthy and own our flat so my rent is very small. That being said, I've only just worked my way out of overdraft debt from uni so I only have less than a grand saved at my big age of 27. I'm really proud though, knowing where I came from :) I can definitely afford the essentials now and to put some money in savings at the end of the month, which feels MILES away from the poverty I have experienced.

I had many fillings at the dentist as a child growing up in the 90s. Now, as an adult I’m pretty sure it wasn’t necessary. I’ve heard from someone it was a money making scheme for dentist to profit from the nhs. Is this a thing?

Bloody hell, I'm about to get 6 fillings on private (haven't been to the dentist in too long :( ) and its £500 and some change. Not ideal but 700 for 2??? What a rip off

It absolutely reads that you imply everyone gets two weeks off - also if you do have two weeks off why are you only doing your shopping today? Have you worked retail at Xmas time 😬

Do you feel guilty being sick from work?

Last year my colleague came in with a 'cold'. After a couple days she told me her girlfriend had tested positive for Covid but she didn't. I tested positive for Covid a few days later, on 23rd December. I couldn't visit my family and that was my last chance to have seen my grandad before he died in January. Shit sucks Don't go in when you're sick and don't feel guilty, it's the right thing to do and you're entitled to it.

It's my wife's birthday today, I don't have a card and gift, help me, what do I do?

Mate, for future reference, you could've prepared her a breakfast in bed (with flowers and chocolate) and then made a card that explains the brunch/holiday situation. And probably I still would've planned her whole day for her (take her on a nice walk/to a coffee shop/make her dinner/just make sure she keeps her legs up)

Tell me you’re middle class without telling me you’re middle class? Do you or your family do something you thought was normal but as you’ve grown, you’ve realised it’s stereotypically middle class?
