Belgian motorways are fine, people just like to exaggerate. British motorways are usually excellent. However, it's a different situation for regular roads. Belgian roads in towns are, like OP said, long lasting and well maintained. Having lived in the midlands for 4 years, I can vouch for OP's take on British roads. The asphalt is definitely different, lower quality and full of potholes within a year. They can't handle any kind of weather, and if a pothole ever gets fixed (big if), it doesn't last long.

How many people do you know who were made redundant in 2025? If so, which industries?

Have you heard of Fields of Mistria? It's a more fantasy themed Stardew Valley type game. I was worried it would be another clone but it's really well made! I also have hundreds of hours into Stardew, and got absolutely obsessed with Fields of Mistria :D

I eonder how he'd actually be at Eurovision though. Live instruments are not allowed, all the instrumental performances you see are fake. Only vocals are live. Makes it easier and quicker for the sound engineers.

Nikittele@reddit

Nah that's just an excuse. Belgium has pretty much the same weather, and is just as rainy. As soon as the sun is out on the first spring day, the beer gardens and terraces are overflowing. You guys just don't have that café culture, nor do you have the large squares lined with outdoor seating areas like every town and city in Belgium.

Why do people get so defensive when you point out the litter problem in this country?

Posted by acnebbygrl@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 469 comments

Nikittele@reddit

I try to pick up litter when I go for a walk but it's so much, it doesn't even feel like it helps anything. It's very much an attitude problem I think as well. Our company does an annual nature walk, and last year some of us went off the beaten path to some ruins. There was so much liter everywhere, so I started picking some stuff up to throw away once we'd find a bin. I didn't even have a bag with me so my hands were filled with nasty old cups and chips bags. My co-workers thought I looked silly, they didn't mock me but they didn't help me out either.

A British friend just told me that in UK you guys never dub foreign content (series, movies or animes). Is that right or she's just trolling me?

> The lack of dubbing in the Netherlands has been credited with vastly improving English proficiency there. Can confirm, it's the same in Flanders (Dutch speaking part of Belgium). I thank TV for my English speaking proficiency and I thank video games for my English writing proficiency.

> This should be paid directly out of taxes This is how it's done in Belgium for the VRT channel. It's similar to BBC and is funded by taxes. when I moved here I was surprised they rely on harassing people household per household to get their funding instead of including it in taxes. I always assumed the BBC was a government run TV channel and got its funding the same way as VRT.

What was your top present this year?

Posted by Apple_Master@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 967 comments

Nikittele@reddit

My brother won Christmas this year by a landslide. Our family has stopped buying presents for everyone because it was getting too expensive. Instead we do a Secret Santa. My brother wasn't even my Secret Santa this year, but he still got me (and I quote) "a little something". He got me a one of a kind sketch, from a Disney Lorcana artist, of Rafiki (The Lion King) lifting my cat up instead of Simba. He's personal friends with the artist so he asked them for a favour. I was already emotional when I saw he got me a commissioned sketch, but when my partner pointed out Rafiki was holding my cat I just lost it and cried. Last year I got him a sketch from one of the artists of Banjo & Kazooie (now a co-worker of mine) so I guess this was his payback. I love him so much ❤️

A couple of weeks ago a co-worker/friend mentioned he lost his Snowman-themed winter beanie. I drew his name for secret santa, so I hunted down all the snowman beanies I could to find the best match. Ended up finding an unworn one that I think matches exactly on Vinted. I know the sadness of losing a favourite piece of clothing, so I hoped it makes him happy :)

Are there any subtle cultural etiquettes in the UK that foreigners might miss?

If you're driving a car, pedestrians are beneath you and must be ignored. Feel free to just fly onto a side road at full speed without looking if anyone is crossing or wants to cross the street. Moved to the UK a couple of years ago, and this was honestly my biggest culture shock. Where I'm from, cars will almost trip over themselves to stop for you even in places where you're not supposed to cross. Now, I don't expect to be able to just blindly cross the street and have every driver bend to my will, but the lack of respect for pedestrians was eye opening.

There's a Mythbusters episode where they test this kind of situation. One had to follow the rules and drive the limit, the other would speed and swerve through traffic. In the end they were only a minute or two quicker (definitely not more than 10 minutes, been a while since I've seen the episode). Getting there marginally quicker is never worth endangering yourself and everyone arouns you.

Why is heat in the UK different?

Posted by AdVaanced77@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 2283 comments

Nikittele@reddit

People always parrot the line of "if it retains heat, it keeps heat out", thinking about insulation but fail to consider building practices such as window locations, window sizes, awnings and tree placement. Houses built to keep out heat will have small windows on the south side and larger windows on the north side. Houses built in typically mild/colder climates will have the opposite. Hot climate houses will have awnings (and trees) to keep direct sunlight off the walls so they don't heat up as much, again something you often see on British houses.

Right there with you... I've been better about it but I think that's because it's been a few years since I've been sick and "it's a matter of time" is always bouncing around in the back of my head. Whenever someone says they've been sick, I can feel the panic rising. I absolutely hate that people think it's funny, as it pops up often completely out of the blue in all kinds of TV shows and movies.

No, "loos" not "loo". A quick search suggests that "loo" in Dutch is an old word that refers to an open space in a forest. So any place name with "loo" at the end would probably be founded in such an area.

Nikittele@reddit

It makes more sense in Dutch. "loos" is something you attach to a word to indicate it is lacking something. "Waarde" (value/worth) plus "loos" become "waardeloos" (worthless). Speculaas is a Dutch biscuit with all kinds of spices. The story goes that Belgium wanted to create their own version but since they didn't have access to the spice trade, made it without the spices. No spices, so Speculoos instead of Speculaas.

What's something that people do, that is completely justified, but irritates the he'll out of you?

As someone who moved the UK, this is one of yhe things that baffles me. We are taught to walk on the right side of a foothpath so others can pass you on the left, just like cars would. So naturally I assumed it would be the same here, except on the left side. Nope! There's no rhyme or reason.

I have never seen one person, with work done on their face, look good. So WHY is it still so popular?

Side sleepers: sleep with a pillow between your legs. It straightens your spine and aligns your hips. I injured a disk in my spine a couple of years ago, and recently started to develop sciatica (nerve pain in my hips/legs) as a result of said injury. Whenever it flared up I would be in agony every time I tried to turn around in bed. Nothing helped until I tried sleeping with a memory foam pillow between my knees. It hasn't flared up since!

The ring sits flush inside your ear "cup", it doesn't bother me as a side sleeper at all. I didn't say you have to throw them out, on the contrary :)  > And since they're made of silicone, they're easy to clean.  It's the standard foam ones (not Loop) that you have to throw out after each (or a couple of) use(s).

When you get that scary TV license letter, there will be an option to tell them you don't need the license. You can fill in a form online to declare it. They say they will leave you alone for two years, then you have to re-confirm you don't need it. They sent a letter to us after a year, but we just filled in the form again and no more letters since. If you ignore the letters and don't fill on the form, the letters will become more and more aggressive. At some point they might even send someone to check on you. Do not let them inside, they have no jurisdiction to investigate your home.

Virgin is the only provider in our area with Gigabit speed, and since we value that we "had no choice". We rarely have any issues, I think it's been down for a day once in the two years we've lived here? A couple of weeks/months ago, internet was down for everyone in Staffordshire and beyond, except for Virgin because it only affected the BT network.

> Won't be buying it, because I don't fancy burning the neighbourhood down.  As someone originally from Belgium, this is an odd sentiment. Every household has a deep fryer there, like a kettle in every UK household, it's almost mandatory. Never heard of them burning down houses. And yes, they sit with used oil or solidified (beef) fat in between uses. We'd usually replace the oil or fat when it gets too dirty (like every 5-10 uses?) depending on what kind of stuff has been fried in it.

How do I respond to my boss guilt tripping me into work?

Posted by Shlupey@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 365 comments

Nikittele@reddit

Do NOT go to work, injuries like that need time to heal properly. I once fell down the stairs on my way to work and tore ligaments in my foot. Doctor told me to stay off my feet for a full month. After a week my boss tried to get me back, offering to let me sit down (worked in a supermarket but boss didn't allow us to sit at the registers because it "looks unprofessional"). I declined and insisted on doing exactly what the doctor told me. Haven't had any issues with my foot since. If I'd listened to my boss I would have risked fucking up my recovery and having my foot act up when it's cold or something.
