Are UK work hours really long?

Neo-Riamu@reddit

I work in an electrical wholesalers. My work pattern is: Monday-Friday 0730-1730 For this i get an additional 2 weeks on top of my 28 days and i get a bonus every year. Also the working environment is not so bad and it fairly flexible for my needs (child care and medical appointments) It not the most hours i have worked in a week for a job and it not the shortest but it is very close to home in an industry i like.

But my newer surgery and other place and this is especially true after Covid but they now collect you and walk you to the room and i do not have to touch a single door with my hand. The only door i ever touch now related to a doctor anywhere is the main entrance.

Always and i repeat always take time off if you are sick. It will benefit the people around you a great deal more than if you turn up sick. Not only will you be the slowest you will most likely spread what you have and cause more people to be off sick. So always take time off to recover. Unless you have a hang over then thats your own problem and you gotta turn up lmao

Other people who spent some of their formative years in a residential home(not foster care) how was it for you?

Neo-Riamu@reddit

I was placed in care myself from 13 to 17. I had 2 families and a care home. First family super controlling no TV after 8PM no lunch bigger then a sandwich and dinner had to be from a cafe for some reason no home cooked meals. Later on i found out the husband and wife were divorced and living separately which i promptly informed my social worker about as i really didn’t like the family it took a small investigation and a month for them to prove me correct and for them to be barred from fostering. Second family were pretty decent overall but sadly they didn’t know how to treat a child with extreme peculiar behaviours and also they kept comparing me to a previous foster child which i did not care for. Lastly a kids home it was the greatest place for me personally. I got to do what i liked i had a large selection of adult to lean on and they knew how to treat me well plus 3 meals a day guaranteed. I eventually got old enough to move out and it was an alright transition although social services in my area were not great for after care support so took a while. I would say overall it was all good i suppose but the kids home was the best personally.

Are there people who are actually happy?

Neo-Riamu@reddit

Im a happy adult. Me M41 a father of 3 daughters a grandfather to 1 grandson. My work pay is just under the median. I do not own a house (will be looking this year). I had what is considered an awful childhood (i think I was always sad the. But it becoming hard to remember) but once i was put into care my life got 100% better. But to be the happy person i believe its a combination of things that i believe anyone can do. I do not have contact with around 60% of my family (my choice) mainly my parents and aunty and uncles. I have simple hobbies, I’m a gamer I fly kites and work on my motorbike. Im not massively ambitious person but i am slowly moving up at my own rate. Im in a stable relationship with someone and have been for 10 years and by nature they are emotionally chill. I also have an incredibly small group of people i socialise with but i am an introvert so i think that is normal for me. No matter the situation i know it can be fixed or wont matter later on. And if you ask most people about me I’m not normal and I’m kind to those around me but never outside people around me. Also lastly I am acutely aware of the greater problems the world has and I have solutions but I’m not ambitious and i do not plan on being a politician. At the end of the day i do not socialise too much i mainly keep to myself and i have simple interests and i do not stress about things that can be fixed. Now the question should be what can you do to simplify your life will cutting people out help or does long term planning your career help or lastly not worry about thing you literally cannot do anything about help. Only you known the answer and being part of reddit for a ling while has shown you will find many people who think and feel like you do so keep in mind your not alone.

Has anyone else's older (70+) parents cooking become flavourless?

Posted by calumjp1@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 138 comments

My parent have always had no real cooking ability. The height of spice in our house was my mother putting garlic in a food that normally wouldn’t have it. Same for my grand parents they would put salt into the food to give it flavour. Once i lived on my own i had every type of spice and herb going juts because. I do think it’s more generational and maybe wealth related. But heard to say.

Not sure of this is relevent but i am the person who looks like i am copying mannerism of another person especially if i am around them a longtime. But in my case i am neurodivergent (Autism) and a lot of my habits are related to me auto masking. For me after a while i can stop it if i notice and if it is detrimental to the relationship. I have met many who are fully unaware they do it at all. If your live in landlord is on the spectrum then this could be normal or any related neurodivergent area. But if not then it os truly odd behaviour for neurotypical or at least in my experience so far.

Well i will always call in sick when i am sick but so far that just been 2 working days of the year and one was my youngest child. I have been unfortunate to not be ill during my working days but overall this year has been pretty good i have only have minor ailment with a grand total of 7 days total. Usually I’m ill 2 weeks of the year which would normally seem me off work around 4 days. But i suppose i do enjoy my work so really minor illnesses wont see me off and i also get an additional 1 week of a year on top of the legal minimum.

In a regular oven you would cook a pizza at 180c for around 20-25 minutes. If this is some form of outside oven situation (wood oven or similar) then the temperature can fluctuate wildly and there for placing the pizza closer to the entrance would be preferable or in some case the very back. But no matter the technique it requires someone watching it which these were clearly never looked at until it was too late.

The only time i have know anyone to have an issue dogging a bog hole was on the beach for obvious reasons.

Blend in mixer till it is essentially puréed Leave it to mature for no less than 3 days. Boil some water and pour in on the day you wish to use it let it call and just chuck it on whenever a person appears under your window.

How do we prepare for the ageing population crisis in the UK?

Posted by craig552uk@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 841 comments

There is a lot of good answer people have given. But the reality is that it most likely going to become law to euthanise the elderly (then by extension the terminally ill and the incapable) most likely the age will be set around 80. Unless medical technology catches up and extended the healthy well being of a human ensuring they can work longer and be healthy. But I doubt it we as a species like to take the easy route a lot of the time especially under the current model of capitalism.

Can you tell me if the frozen bottle of water in front of a fan actually works to bring room temperature down?

Posted by jelly-rod-123@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 260 comments

Neo-Riamu@reddit

Ok I have tested this a far bit. Now where I live is a little unique my internals are always between 2-4 cooler then outside unless it winter and it can be a fair bit warmer before heating is applied. Now I have a standard pedestal 12” fan literally nothing special what so ever it has 3 speeds and that it. Now depending on the size of the bottle and the speed of the fan you can get the temperature down a fair bit. But for comfort level I use two 500ml bottles of water strap to the back of my fan. I set the fan speed too 2. I put on the swivel. I ensure all sun facing windows are closed and the curtains are drawn. I close the bathroom door of my 2 bedroom flat. We leave the kitchen door closed but leave the window open. I can get the temperature down an extra 4c for around 30 - 45 mins this is great for the end of a work day especially if it has been hot. But I have yet to test this in a heat wave situation and I plan on putting up a reflective film on my windows. My freezer has a quick freeze compartment so I could keep this going constantly.

I finish uni around that time which meant I did not have employment. Anywho I left the country with my last job seekers (£80 ish) and went to Bulgaria where I found work. Had a good time built some houses for British people and Bulgarians what I found out later was Mafia. Once I was back (after 2 years in Bulgaria) I managed to find a job first day back because the manger at a newly opened business though I was Bulgarian (I did not have an accent other then British and I look like an atypical British bloke). After a few months he wanted to know who taught me to have a British accent I said it helps to be born in the UK. Turns out my manger does not hire British people but by this point it was too late and I was literally the only person who could do any job but I never did overtime which my manager really hated. Apparently he did not like British people because we were not willing to work 18 hour days also he did not pay the overtime hours so there was no incentive what so ever. He later after I left the job got arrested for some minor crime and then deported back to India. Anywho I have not been out of work for a single moment since. I have also rarely got to use my uni qualifications for the field I studied for but I have also lost interest in that considering the sort of thing I wanted to do now pays peanuts. I earn enough to be happy but sadly not enough to own a house.

Neo-Riamu@reddit

I lent someone 50p when I was in care last I checked my spreadsheet (he is the last person to owe me money) he owed a total or £3000 in interest alone. I am fully aware of where he lives and I still hold the agreed contract. I will one day collect. The person who was second longest paid recently after owing over £1000 for borrowing a £5. I stoped lending money as people take issue with my interest rates. My mother took the biggest issue when she borrow some money for a car and found she could not keep up with what she owed so I went through the proper process and got the money back by forcing her to sell the car and a few valuables.

The only way I know to get things down a bit more is it: Only use washing machine after 12 at night Only eating cold food (unless you have gas then continued eating hot food) Turn off any unnecessary heating. Put a timer on any storage heater unless inbuilt for water 12 at night electricity usage. Keep lights off. And that all I got as those would applies to me as they are the only next step I have left to me.

Is Sunny Beach, Bulgaria as bad as people say it is?

Neo-Riamu@reddit

Well I lived in Bulgaria and me and my friends would go to sunny beach in off season (still very hot but nothing really going on) and well it was interesting. There is issue and TBH it the same in a lot of areas. But here are a few things to keep note of. 1. Never leave anything of any value in your hotel room. 2. Have one of those body wallets that keep the money pounce close to your chest. 3. Do not under any circumstance buy street food (UK guts just ain’t built for that). 4. Do not buy anything from any of the stall seller or shops you could literally head for the closest town/city and find it half price. 5. Watch out for gypsies sadly this is a fact for Bulgaria but the one around sunny beach are probably gonna be the worst types to meet. FYI I have not lived in Bulgaria for 15 years now so a few things may of changed but from what I hear from my Bulgaria friends not by much. But if your open to a none beach holiday the rest of Bulgaria got plenty to offer for all sort of experiences my favourite was a western style trail ride (with a few bovine creatures) and you just rode around what I think was a mountain for about 4 days that was fun.

I have zero interest in any sport. When it comes to my family the vast majority do not seem to have any interest in any sport. So I wouldn’t worry too much about much if you got mate and they want to hangout with you even when you have no clue what they on about then they maybe good mates.

The other guy did do that but he recently had a kid and so far has not gone back to that behaviour for now. And the sales manager is clearly an alcoholic but somehow does his job well. Although the other day I was watching doctor who and he signed in BSL and there was no subtitles an I had to tell my missus what was said lol so it has it perks.
