I was allowed to work in my small print shop so long as the door was locked. I would hang printing on the door handle for customers to pick up and they would pay by bank transfer. It was glorious.

My housemate is 71 (1955) from Yorkshire what's something he would be highly nostalgic of that would make his year?

I had that problem. Now I cook them 25 mins, then open the oven door slightly just to let a bit of heat out. Then I close it again and turn off the heat. I leave them to cool in the oven and they are fine now.

OLDER PEOPLE . Was 1976 really the best ever English summer ?

I was working that summer, driving. I'd met a workmate for a cuppa at a transport cafe in Leeds when it first started to rain. I'll never forget all the HGV drivers leaving their food to stand on the road looking up to feel the rain on their faces.

What's thevembarrassing thing has happened to you in 2026 so far?

I enjoyed toasted cheese just as you described. I'd have a slice of bread and butter with it. My readybrek was similar too, I'd have it made up as normal and then have half an inch of dry readybrek on top.

What are you addicted to?

I used to work in a factory. There was a box of tiny ball bearings on one of the machines. I loved to stick my hand in there. Over a few weeks I managed to pocket enough to make my own box of ball bearings.

The availability of fattening food. If my grandma fancied a sausage roll, she'd walk to the grocer for flour, lard and butter, then to the butcher for sausage meat. She'd make pastry and roll it out, assemble sausage rolls and cook them. After all that time and trouble she'd eat them as a meal for a few days, not as a snack.

With much hindsight, if I could start again with my 2 boys (now in their 40s) I would do more to keep them close. More holidays, more activities, more days out and fun. I'd make the family more fun than hanging round with a bunch of losers. We were too busy working, but still broke, to give them the attention they needed and both took to booze and drugs leading to aggression and paranoia. One now works and still lives with us. The other was homeless for a while but now has his own place and is independent. He's avoiding old friends. Their friends who took the other road now have relationships, children and grandchildren.

How often do you go on holiday?

Have you been the subject of a mental health episode?

The main problem as I see it, is that if a person is suffering psychosis, the only way to get help for them is to get them to make an appointment and see a doctor. They won't do that because they think there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. The family has to suffer until the psychosis leads the person to be a danger to themselves or other people. At that point the police can take them away and get a mental health assessment. They can learn to bluff their way through the assessment though as I found out.

Is the UK actually at risk of running out of water? How serious is it really? A colleague was anxious about it this morning, but surely it can’t be that bad can it?

All the reservoirs are silted up, reducing the amount of water they can hold. It's easy to see when the water level is low. It will get worse every year unless they find some way to dredge them or dig out in dry conditions but of course the water companies won't want to spend that sort of money.
