Silly problems require silly solutions

I know I'm "too late", but you could probably do it wit something like kscreen-doctor (KDE) or DPMS (probably only on something like Hyprland/Sway). Or you could use DDC/CI to dim your screen to something like 5%

Wayland protocol for "Sensitive" Areas? (passwords etc)

Posted by Misicks0349@reddit | linux | View on Reddit | 38 comments

ModerNew@reddit

It's common among mobile devices for some time now. And there's lots of sensitive data that's not your password and that is shown in plain text at all times. i.e. your bank statements. The only outlier (outside Linux) in this debate is Windows which decided taking screenshots of your screen every N seconds is a good solution.

Isn't it better to have a system like this be overengineered than lacking in functionality? Android's is like that and it's frustrating not being able to take screenshots in some apps.

The EU should force software monopolists to support Linux

Not like that, we're not talking about singular entities within EU, they don't have enough leverage, we're talking about EU *as* an Entity including such clause when they're looking for software for their administratoive/office workers

Law is a bad idea, but there is a very simple solution. You can have it as a clause in a contract. More and more public institutions use Linux based OSes, there have been talks about having centralized EU distribution, you can require your contractor to support all OSes that you work with or not qualify for a tender.

[Serious] Why getting to properly use Linux after years of using Windows feels like getting on a new hobby?

ModerNew@reddit

This. OP is genuinely interested so they don't mind relearning a thing or two. If someone comes into it disgruntled from the start they're gonna hate the relearning process no matter how better or worse is the new way. And starting new things that we're interested in gives us high dopamine hits. That's why ee have tendency to start so many more projects than finish (meanwhile the "unfinished" pile amounts to a burnout, but that's whole other thing).

Where does the common idea/meme that Linux doesn't "just work" come from?

>Compare that to installing Windows. I did, Windows installer can suck my... In all seriousness as bad as Windows Installer is as still requires more knowledge (even if we count overcoming a MS Account requirement) it's still simpler than arch (although worst than most other distros with GUI installer), and most users don't even see Windows installer with their eyes. Although I'd venture to say that if we count the fact that Windows installer will shit it's pants with the drivers if not created on other similar machine then who knows...

>What are people doing in Office that doesn't work in LibreOffice? Using Office. It sounds dumb, but it really is like this. I've felt it first hand recently. I've installed it on my parents PC (not Linux mind you, just didn't have any means to activate 365 at hand), and it's bad. My father didn't even touch it at first, it was bad cause it wasn't Office, no discussion.

What abandoned or unmaintained Linux things (software, hardware, etc) do you still use?

Fingerprint GUI is one I didn't see mentioned I used it with my old laptop, and is the one I miss the most now that it got too outdated to use.

We need alternatives to USA based and owned software

Well 3. Could be circumvented partially if linux foundation moved. Right now as a US based foundation has to be compliant with the US sanctions (and legalities): see recent removal of multiple russian contributors or the issue with business collaboration with tencent and Huawei, if the foundation were moved to more neutral country then they would have more freedom as to what they do.

Still not a reason to lock it out, even if it's soldered to motherboard there clearly are other options, so why offer them with Windows but not with Ubuntu?

ModerNew@reddit

Oh, I'm not saying there isn't place for that. We also don't go below the 32gb for dev machines. However if the memory requirement goes up 56gb, cause you want other OS installed? That's shitty, and that's whay I meant. I updated the comment.

ModerNew@reddit

No, I understand the potential need for additional memory. As I said in other comment, researchers where I work don't get less than 32gb, *but* requiring user to get 56gb of RAM more *only* because they want different OS is an overkill

ModerNew@reddit

Oh, yes 100%, our researchers don't get less than 32gb, but still making user upgrade from 8 to 64 just cause they want other OS pre-installed is ridiculous.

ModerNew@reddit

But 64 Gigs of RAM? That *sounds* like a little overkill. And yeah, I get it, it might be the only spec they've tested it with, but forcing customer to buy in the highest shelf is *at least* shitty.

Somehow the compatibility issue isn't so prevalent when using CUPS on Unix systems (both Linux & MacOS), also it doesn't make you reinstall the drivers regularly, cause "yesterday they worked fine, but today your printer is actually only a scanner".

> No I use my PC for "real work" like sharing my screen during a Teams or Slack call Yeah, cause "streaming" definitely doesn't just mean "screen sharing". I'm studying and working part-time, I've used both Teams, Slack and Zoom, never had an issue with \*\*streaming\*\* video over either. Although I've never bothered with installing clients for them, and Firefox is Wayland native, so that might be the difference maker. Just a side note: if I was a streamer I'd most likely use a secondary setup for the stream itself, too much of proprietary software to bother with setting it up fully on linux.

Would you like to elaborate on the topic? Not to be mean or anything, just curious. I've been using Hyprland as an evolution of my old i3 setup for 1/2 a year no, and outside of one hiccup that was my own fault (I was using experimental explicit-sync implementation, and forgot to switch back to main branch after it got merged with 555 drivers) it's been pretty much smooth sailing. Sure the streaming is frustrating cause it doesn't work with the Xorg apps (ergo, f.e. Discord client), but I can live with that, and where I can't I moved to different clients (like WebCord for Discord). Meanwhile I'm loving the portals in general. So just curious, are there thing that I'm simply not seeing yet?

The only issue I have with this is, holy shit, how unstable both mobile hardware & Android (dunno about IoS) became in the last few years. Ffs I have a 3 yo Samsung series A that keeps freezing, crashing and the screen goes out of order multiple times a day (to where I have to reboot it), reboots take age too. I could go on and on, and on... And I've never had this issue with my previous phones. I swear to God "disposable" technology is one of the worst things that happened lately.

I dunno about MySpace, I ain't old enough, but when it comes to Skype and Discord it was about massive difference in quality of provided services. Discord wasn't just a single chatroom with vc option - servers where already far more complicated when jump happened. And Duscord was so good it's virtually a monopolist at this point. It's different when it comes to Twitter alternatives. They're rather similar to the original and don't provide new solutions. So as long as Twitter is usable the communities will stay there - it's not that simple to rebuild your fanbase on different service from ground up.
