Scientists Opinion: Why I Take Global Warming Seriously

Yeah, that too;\] It will likely be a wake up call to some, but I wouldn't get your hopes up, there will still be denial and the imperative to bounce back and recover, disasters and wars are good for GDP remember. In a few weeks this will be a distant memory and the capitalist machine will keep grinding forward. Humanity really is in a predicament given how intertwined and energy hungry the global economic system has become, incremental change might have been possible decades ago but its really hard to see how we can make the drastic changes we need at this point, given the division and widespread ignorance. I think our leaders are hoping for a technological fix rather than having the courage to lead a systemically driven vision, which of course is no guarentee. I try and leave some optimism for my mental health, but its really hard to envision how this civilisation can get out of the crisis we are in, its too large and complex, too many vested interests and momentum in continuing business as usual, our leaders are just not up to it. You have to take a few puffs of copium and joke every now and again though, just to stay sane.

I would put it down to the internet and technology generally, young people especially get our excitement and dopamine hits from a constant and never end source of novelty and media online and through the interface of screens. This ultimately levels reality out and leaves the real world feeling like too much effort and relatively uninteresting and kind of scary, however it is clear that we build up a realistic and healthy sense of self through our connection to others and experiences in the natural environment, which take time and emotional growth and intelligence. We have traded convenience for authenticity essentially, leaving aside the commercialisation and overpriced commodification of everything that we now experience in late stage capitalism, peoples struggling mental health is very much symptomatic of the society we have created, especially for young people. Adults should have known better but of course we are also slaves to the system and what do we expect when it rewards greed, narcissism etc and disinentivises community and a sense of kinship with others. It wil run its course and change direction eventually, we need system change on multiple levels but it will take time.

Does the UK no longer have a sense of community?

Posted by tylerthe-theatre@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 285 comments

Meshd@reddit

For the majority of human history community used to be a necessity for survival, but over time due to market forces we have moved society towards individualism and convenience, for profit and in theory to save ourselves time. Of course both the older ways of community living and more atomised newer ways have their pros and cons and its in human nature to adopt a nostalgic / grass is greener state of mind and never to be satisfied with the ways things currently are.  If we simplified and went back to a more local village time social arrangement, peoples desires would probably naturally drift towards technology and convenience because we would figure out we actually like many of the things that we take for granted now. Anyway you cannot just create community if there is not a need for it,people can try but it will never be as strong as it used to be. Sorry for vague answer, just my thoughts.

Yes you could easily get ChatGPT to write a professional sounding skeptic argument, with the right prompts. Its AI generated sophism used in bad faith, rather than constructing arguments based on evidence and data. Giving the masses such tools was irresponsible imo, although its not like our leaders are much better and have downplayed the dangers of climate change for years, largely setting the tone for the rest of the population. A scientific technocracy run by leading experts or AI in charge would have been better than what we got/have, but of course these solutions have their pitfalls too, namely corruptible human nature and alignment problems,to name a couple. If we have an economic system where profit is tied to power and influence, then the general direction will always tend in this way, we need system change on a global level, but I don't see this happening until full global collapse literally forces us to, which of course will be too late at that point. Arguably its too late already, far too much momentum in the system and bad/misguided actors.

Yes especially in a hyper competitive, individualistic culture in the West, specifically the US. The entitlement and arrogance people have these days is astounding. Climate change has become political and tribalised, tje evidence doesnt matter. Ultimately they dont like the aesthetic of the average protester and leftie because they see high consumption lifestyles and materialism as a marker for higher status and worth. We are flawed and civilisation/rewards the worst of our lower brained actions, there are simply too many stupid and brainwashed people for me to have much faith in the necessary change we need. Hate and blaming doesnt achieve anything though, its just playing them at there game. I dont know.

Great another crop failure: olive oil

Ha,okay, that does sound like an interesting plot and I guess I could view it as more mental preparation for the impending collapse. I love nature so the idea of living on a barren moon or bubble city always sounds depressing to me, but if the alternative is an overpopulated, dangerous and heating Earth, I guess its the lesser of 2 evils. I find it more plausible that humanity would go inwards into virtual Worlds where the laws of physics and resource scarcity is no longer an issue, but ultimately as an evolved biological animal, I think the further we stray from Earth and nature, the more unforeseen suffering will arise, humanity and the Billionaire class should focus all efforts on managing and maintaining what we already have, before we even consider populating others planets/moons. Cheers for the recommendation, I will check it out over next few days ,i'm in need of some escapism atm.

I don't know that show but it sounds quite accurately dystopia ,given how things are unravelling. To put a positive spin on it I guess humans can become accustomed and adjusted to less hyper normal stimuli and novelty over time, its the sudden drop on these things following collapse that cause the suffering. Maybe crispr or some more advanced biotech/AI will keep crop yields relatively stable but the uncertainties of the complex and rapidly changing system of climate, make me pessimistic that humans will be up to the task. I have a relatively simple diet and know whats coming,I dont even care what food is available too much, just as long as I dont starve.

What exactly is the endgame for the rich and powerful?

Posted by 21stC_DaVinci@reddit | collapse | View on Reddit | 501 comments

Meshd@reddit

Yes and also the rich and powerful are not an homogeneous group, they are a collection of various individuals, who like many nation states, and corps, don't see the benefit of radically changing the growth imperatives and consumption behaviors they have become accustomed to, unless everyone else they are competing against also does. If the system translates the accumulation of assets and wealth to power, it is game theoretically illogical to stop playing unless the rules change and everyone is effected. We all know about the Fiduciary Duty corporations are held too also. Of course this is extremely short-sighted and I sincerely hope that there are many private conversations going on about systems change to seriously address the economic system and its incentives, because even the richest and most powerful now must know that the endgame is nearing. Maybe the issue of collective action and global system change is just too difficult and insolvable so they are riding it out and enjoying there wealth and privileges while they still can, to me that seems most likely.

But it decays into our old friend CO2,which still isnt ideal, but its something. I think it typically takes several years, with a half-life of about 9-15 years in the atmospheres,in which more methane will likely be leaked into the atmosphere. We need a few technological and political miracles to bring us down to safe levels, which is why its extremely hard not to fall into doomerism these days.
