How would you spend a birthday alone?

I’d buy you a drink to hear that malaria story. Don’t be down about doing it alone is most important. Happy upcoming birthday 🎉

Was I wrong for assuming I was next to be served, and leaving when the server was rude?

She was out of line using that tone. What did you miss out on buying? Are you thankful for saving the money or would you rather have the stuff?

Hormonal is interesting. I was the same. Mom rented a machine with a rubber pad that would sound an alarm when it detected moisture. I could ignore it. I recall dreaming that I was sitting on the toilet.

Should I keep renting or look to buy a home?

Are you paying high interest rate on any of your debt? I’d probably pay off any high interest debt with savings first. You may be able to get a low interest mortgage loan. Have you considered talking to a bank to see what you would qualify for a home loan?

Why is poutine not more popular here?

Posted by MostFortune1093@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 912 comments

MackCLE@reddit

American here and have never had the opportunity to try poutine although a chain burger type restaurant now has it on their regular menu. I have read the word gravy in almost every comment here. Is gravy a standard type or does it vary? Is it almost always brown and flavored by beef?

What do your households ironing habits look like?

My ironing board and iron have always been out in a spare room. I use it on occasion for pillow cases and curtains or a really wrinkly tshirt.

What reasons would a british bedroom have a single sink in it?

Posted by CatOfTheRailway@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 343 comments

MackCLE@reddit

When my aunt finally got an indoor toilet, I was amazed to see it almost in the middle of a really big bedroom with no walls or anything surrounding it. She was very happy to not go out to the outside in winter. Here in the USA I think it was the difference between country and city living way back then. And part social class as well. I’ve seen posh houses here where they were remodeling and took the single sink out of the bedroom. It does make some sense to have it though.

I’m sure you are correct but it’s not so easy to assimilate to when you’ve been taught and using the other version for 50+ years. I still think I’ve learned a lot by my fairly recent friendships.

I’m American and haven’t tried it but I think I’d like it. I just don’t like to spend without trying it first :) It hasn’t been all that long ago that I heard of it.

Yes I use pound. I hadn’t heard of stone prior to meeting them though and it still doesn’t quite stick in my mind all the time. You should see me trying to use a recipe written in metric. It may be tougher because of my age.

Having quite a few British friends, I’ve learned a lot but am still befuddled by this as well as referring to weight as a stone. And of course, the written date and much of the metric system. :)

Not necessarily lunch but there was a vending machine bagel with a huge pat of butter that we would microwave. I might hate it now but I’d sure like to give it a try.

Mine always used high setting on the iron. When we finally invested in a high end iron, the warning and talk had to be much more stern. He liked to iron everything, even old ratty clothes. 🤦

Since I got this newfangled washer that I really don’t like, I’ve been adding water to liquid or dissolving pods before adding. I once found a bit of the pod wrapper in the washer after it was done. My latest quirk I suppose. :)

When I traveled for work, the Las Vegas hotels did this on purpose and the free coffee downstairs still involved a walk through the casino. I ordered room service coffee. It wasn’t crazy expensive and when the boss scoffed later, I told him I’d be happy to reimburse him. Not leaving the room without caffeine.
