Do you love or hate Marmite? Were you introduced to it as a small child or as an older child/adult?

Just curious, really. I was teaching a year 3 class about adverts and we looked at Marmite. Many had never tried it and thought it looked delicious but all of those who had never had it as a young child hated it. Most of those who’d had it when they were very small liked it. I just wondered if this might have some weight as a possible theory - The majority of people who had Marmite as a baby or young child will be Marmite lovers.
Personally, I love Marmite and had it on toast as a baby in my highchair most mornings. My husband and children are the same.
MuchClevererThanYou@reddit
I never had it as a young child. I first tried it as a teen & hated it. Now I slather it on toast like I am icing a cake.
OkScratch6377@reddit
I LOVE marmite. Always have since a child. Now I'm 47👀. I have a cupboard full of marmite jars. The BEST marmite is the MATURED X marmite. It's extra strong. So I stocked up on that. I also stock up on the peanut butter marmite. As that was previously discontinued.
In my old job.. me and my colleague used to eat the gold marmite with a spoon neat, with a spoon from a jar. 🤭. No wonder I didn't stay in that job long Tho in previous jobs my nickname was marmite 🤭. They should make t shirts. I would so wear the t-shirt!
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
That’s some serious Marmite dedication!
OkScratch6377@reddit
Lol ikr 😂
Time-Mode-9@reddit
Like it on your buttered toast. Good well in cheese sauce or stew.
OkScratch6377@reddit
And on jacket potato
Time-Mode-9@reddit
Agree 100%
Alternative_Smile483@reddit
I use it in gravy as well as Worcestershire sauce yum
anonaccount119@reddit
i tried it a few times as a bairn and always hated it. the smell still makes me gag a bit as an adult.
OkScratch6377@reddit
It smells different than it tastes
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
Ah! Okay. One against my theory then! Thanks for the response 😊
anonaccount119@reddit
my theory is it's the same as coriander with the soap gene. you have to have some genetic mutation to like the yeast pastes.
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
I need to read up on this! This is new to me. Thanks!
Alternative_Smile483@reddit
Absolutely love it lol
OkScratch6377@reddit
Yeah!!! Good shout! It's the best best. Try the black jar they sell. The mature X version. It's really strong
beeurd@reddit
I know this opinion is illegal, but I have no strong feelings about Marmite. It's alright.
OkScratch6377@reddit
What's your opinion on marmite
Unlikely-Shop5114@reddit
I feel the same about the branded marmite.
I actually prefer the supermarket own branded yeast extract.
I don’t know why, just seems to taste better to me.
As a child we had the branded one. But as an adult, and finances being as they are when you leave home, I tried the shop ones and found I preferred them.
Cute_Researcher_6578@reddit
I'm with you on this - but it doesn't quite have the same strapline the marketing department can use lol x
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
Impossible 🤣
StGuthlac2025@reddit
I've been known to eat it by the tea spoon
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
When did you first have Marmite?
StGuthlac2025@reddit
As a kid. Hated it. As a teen liked it somewhat. As an adult by the spoonful
OkScratch6377@reddit
I'm glad to hear you like to eat it by the spoon full! That's great. I always do this👍
darcy-1973@reddit
Same
StGuthlac2025@reddit
If only I could get over my aversion to mushrooms.
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
😂
OkScratch6377@reddit
I had it when I was about 6
h00dman@reddit
Why does this sound like a doctor taking a medical history?
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
🤣🤣🤣
OkScratch6377@reddit
Same same. Get it down ya
mablestrange@reddit
Me too. Was fed it on toast when I was about 2 and loved it then too
Japhet_Corncrake@reddit
Love it. Only on toast though. I was indifferent towards it as a child.
No-Extension7016@reddit
Reminds me of twiglets
Powerful-Reason-6319@reddit
Baked beans with marmite on a jacket spud with cheese on top. Food of the Gods.
woodstar11@reddit
I've always hated it but my Wife has a bit on her toast and having tried it again in my 50s I've decided it's ok!! Not too much just a bit on hot buttered toast.
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
Less is definitely more with Marmite 😉
Super_Ground9690@reddit
I’ve given both my children marmite since they were small because I eat it a lot. One loves it, one hates it. So there’s my sample size of 2.
Kapika96@reddit
Take it or leave it. Not something I'd go out of my way for, but I'd eat marmite on toast if offered it.
Milvusmilvus@reddit
It's foul. My mother tried to feed it to me as a small child and I always hated it. I have a theory that marmite lovers also enjoy parma violets which a small sample size at school confirmed.
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
I despise Parma Violets but I love Marmite…
Aromatic_Ad_9235@reddit
Love it. Had it from a baby. Best on fresh white bread and real butter fingers. MUST be real butter. MUST be scant thinly spread Marmite. Butter can be as thick as you like. With Marmite less is always more.
Extreme-Kangaroo-842@reddit
Hated it as a kid.
Avoided it for decades until we were invited to a dinner party at the wife's friends. I hadn't eaten all day, was starving and we weren't going to eat for another hour at least. During the day they'd had a kid's birthday party and there were some cheese and marmite sandwiches left. I was that hungry I had one and demolished it, followed by about three others.
Loved marmite since that day.
BG3restart@reddit
I was given it as a child, didn't like it, still don't. My sister, on the other hand, has always loved it and will buy anything Marmite flavoured.
Personal-Visual-3283@reddit
I like marmite but I far prefer/love Vegemite. Vegemite on hot buttered toast is one of my favourite foods and all my kids love it too
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
I’ve never tried it but I want to now!
Personal-Visual-3283@reddit
Oh do! Sainsbury’s sell is most consistently - I find it has more flavour than marmite, it is a different texture though
MackCLE@reddit
I’m American and haven’t tried it but I think I’d like it.
I just don’t like to spend without trying it first :)
It hasn’t been all that long ago that I heard of it.
New_Cali20-21@reddit
American here and a fan of marmite, though I cannot recall when I first tasted it. I love salty foods generally and Marmite is something I feel the need to avoid like anchovies, soy sauce, et al. The high sodium really seems unhelathy. Give me a jar and I´d have a hard time not slathering it on everything!
TickTackTonia@reddit
I absolutely love it, with lashings of butter on toast.
But both my brother and I were given it as children and he can't stand it.
So... the saying is true! 😂
AccomplishedRice7427@reddit
I really like it, used to eat it on toast all the time when I was young (we had a long drive to school so always took toast in the car). It is best when you put the butter and marmite on when the toast is cold because the toast goes chewy rather than crunchy:-D. Also Marmite and cheese scones are delicious.
LilacRose32@reddit
I like it a lot as an ingredient but less just as a spread. A local bakery has a great cheese and marmite roll which I really like but I wouldn’t eat it on toast.
Love/hate is just marketing.
I did eat it in things as a small child as my parents were vegetarian in the early 90s
AccomplishedRice7427@reddit
Try making cheese and marmite scones if you get a chance, absolutely delicious.
EllaSingsJazz@reddit
Loved it as a nipper, still love it now. Oooh marmite!
Wonder_Shrimp@reddit
I really like it, and did as a little kid too My husband isn't fussed either way because he is a wrong-un
SharklessFinn@reddit
I don't mind it, I don't have it on toast like most people but I'll demolish a tub of Twiglets and I also use it in tomato based dishes to add a bit of umami. My mum makes marmite pasta when she doesn't know what to have for tea, and it really grew on me when I was still living at home so now when I miss my family and feel homesick, I'll make it :) its my way of feeling close to them again even though I'm nearly 300 miles away.
BlackCatWitch29@reddit
Introduced to it as a child and used to love having it with dairylea cheese on warm toasted crumpets.
I don't love it but I don't hate it either.
As an adult, I don't have it very often unless I'm almost craving it.
DameKumquat@reddit
I was about six, at a birthday party, and took what I assumed were Bovril sandwiches.
They were not. I nearly puked.
I could eat the stuff if I had to, but I don't like it except when made into Twiglets.
Talentless67@reddit
As a kid, also sometimes we would have bovril on toast, if we ran out. Cheese and marmite sandwiches are the best.
TheColonelKiwi@reddit
Honestly I don’t LOVE it but I also don’t HATE it, it’s nice as an occasional snack but I wouldn’t have it every day.
Alyssa9876@reddit
Yep I never got the love hate thing. My gran gave us marmite on toast as kids snd it’s ok. Never had it at home though. To me it’s meh. Nice to know it’s not just me lol
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
You’re Marmite indifferent 😂
MadJohnFinn@reddit
I love it, but my mum craved it while she was pregnant with me, so I don't think I could have started eating it any earlier.
Comfortable_Ad_4267@reddit
Always loved it even spread with cheese on toast.
Beavberry@reddit
Love it and had it as a child. Both of my kids were eating it by 9mo (spread thinly on toast fingers). I was not raising any haters!
barriedalenick@reddit
I don't care either way. I'll eat it or leave it, the whole love it or hate it is just a good marketing trick
Rude-Possibility4682@reddit
Love it.. Especially the XO version. I recall an american friend staying with us a few years back. There is always a pot on the table. So we were having toast, and sat down to eat, we both slapped on the usual dollop on our buttered toast. I'd put jam and marmalade on the table just in case our American friend didn't like Marmite. She did exactly the same as us, slapped on a big dollop, then bit into the toast. The look on her face, when she realised it was it wasn't sweet, and spat out the half chewed portion, and said I thought it was like a syrup or treacle.
alltheparentssuck@reddit
I love Marmite, I just text my mum, she gave it to me as a baby, at around 9 months. I gave it to all my kids, around the same age, they all hate it. I did try them on it as they got older, they still hate it.
My favourite is Marmite and cucumber sandwiches.
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
Thanks for texting your Mum! What a shame all your kids hate it! Does their father like it? 🤔
alltheparentssuck@reddit
No he hates it too.
AshalaWolf_27@reddit
Hated it ever since I asked for chocolate spread on my sandwich and dad mixed it up with Marmite.
OrganizationFun2140@reddit
Can’t stand it. We were a Bovril household but I do remember trying it and finding Marmite far too strong. Think one of my sisters likes it, though.
helpnxt@reddit
Had it as a kid, I like it but rarely have it.
Fyi the marmite range at M&S is very good though, marmite mac n cheese and marmite pizza
SodaCanSuperman@reddit
Used to love it as a kid but sort of indifferent to it now. Haven't had it in years but last time I did I wasn't a fan.
Kowai03@reddit
It's okay... But Vegemite is better. I was born and raised in Australia though and only tried Marmite as an adult.
Techpreist_X21Alpha@reddit
i enjoy marmite in small doses. So spreading a thin layer onto buttered toast or on twiglets is my level of tolerance.
Mikon_Youji@reddit
I used to hate it up until this year and now I actually quite like it.
SpaTowner@reddit
I grew up on butter and marmite on oatcakes. It remains my preferred accompaniment to butter for oatcakes or toast b
Doowrednu@reddit
Always loved - currently on crumpets or to boost sauces and soups
SpaTowner@reddit
It is the only thing that it is acceptable to add to a buttered crumpet.
FScrotFitzgerald@reddit
It's great but it's not as good as Gentleman's Relish.
QUIET AT THE BACK
space_coyote_86@reddit
Indifferent. If someone gave me a piece of toast with marmite, I'd eat it. I've never bought it though.
Shoddy_Pie6514@reddit
Its ok
ButtercupBento@reddit
Tried it first aged 15 spread thickly on buttered white bread as a helper at a nursery. Hated it
Tried it again about 10-15 years later spread thinly in buttered toast and loved it
PipalaShone@reddit
Non-marmite household growing up, can't eat the stuff straight. Excellent ingredient in cooking though, and I have a love/hate relationship with twiglets!
shiveryslinky@reddit
I grew up on it, and I love it SO much!
steveakacrush@reddit
Tried it as a kid and hated it.
Fast forward some decades and had my own kid - missus put some on juniors toast for brekkie one day and told me to feed it to him; I made encouraging noises etc. trying to get him to have it but he refused so I showed him how tasty it was by taking a bite (internally cringing at the expected flavour). I was hooked immediately, now I can't get enough of it!
TSC-99@reddit
Don’t love or hate it
Expression-Little@reddit
My childhood best friend has an Australian dad so we got a lot of Vegemite as kids, and Marmite is just about there. Vegemite all the way though.
Lisanolan2010@reddit
You could smear marmite on a dog egg and I'd eat it.
I don't remember being introduced to it as a kid but I must have at some point.
My fave thing to have it on is buttered crumpets.
Greedy_Investigator7@reddit
Hated it until about 40. Quite like it now (and a spoonful mince for cottage pie, or for roast potatoes, are game changers)
Afraid-Astronomer886@reddit
I don't remember when I first tried it but I've loved it as long as I can remember
E5evo@reddit
Love it. It's our go to post piss up snack. Peanut butter and Marmite sandwiches.
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)

A favourite breakfast of mine is…..smoked bacon, melted strong Cheddar cheese & Marmite, on toast. 😋😋😋
Nineteen_AT5@reddit
I love twiglets but not marmite spread.
PurpleTofish@reddit
There are two types of people in the world…those who like marmite and those who are wrong.
Fickle_Hope2574@reddit
I find hate a strong word.
However marmite I very much hate.
Alternative_Smile483@reddit
The saying is you love it or hate it which is so true. Now ask an Aussie about marmite v Vegemite lol xxx
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
Are you an Aussie? If so, can I ask you? I don’t know any Aussies at all!
Alternative_Smile483@reddit
No hun I’m English but Aussies have Vegemite. It was a thing a while ago nevermind x.
Difficult-Bet-2522@reddit
I love it but limit it otherwise I get obsessed and end up making stuff like marmite tea (marmite dissolved in hot water). It’s a sickness. I must have had it as a baby because I just always remember it being around.
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
I used to drink Bovril a lot but I’ve never tried drinking Marmite! Guess what I’m having before bed tonight?! 🤣
Difficult-Bet-2522@reddit
You won’t regret it 🤣
Diddleymaz@reddit
I love it, I was a marmite baby and I gave it to my children too. My husband also loves it. I use it in cooking too. Not just for toast!
Single-Aardvark9330@reddit
I'm the only person in my family that likes it (although only a thin amount) and I was first given it at nursery
Thatsthebadger@reddit
One of my earliest clear memories is eating buttered toast with marmite as a small child
mablestrange@reddit
Love it and ate from about 2 lol
sam_p_23@reddit
Hated it growing up but now I can’t get enough of it.
LittleSadRufus@reddit
Yes same. I hated it completely until my late teens, the same age I realised I also loved marmalade now.
My daughter enjoyed marmite as a toddler, especially on buttered pasta, but can't stand it now at ten years old.
LikeEveryoneSheKnows@reddit
Had it as a kid, loved it. Funnily enough, even though I love it, I can go for years without having it, but once I have a taste for it, I can get through a jar in a week.
Naive-Interaction567@reddit
Hate it! I never really had it so not sure why I hate it so much.
Inkyyy98@reddit
I loathe marmite. My partner loves it. We’ve been given it to my son since before he was 2. He loves it
teddymcpix@reddit
Love it and have been eating since I was very young.
There are certain rules though.
On toast it must be with butter and cold toast on crumpets it must be with butter and the crumpets must be hotter than the sun.
Never made marmite pasta but have heard it’s lovely.
snarkycrumpet@reddit
I run the crumpets through 2 toaster cycles
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
Your rules are bang on. Although my family think I’m bonkers eating cold toast.
FrostyRydia@reddit
I love marmite. I have its most days on toast. Just a thin layer.
I also love marmite rice cakes. It's a subtle flavour nowhere near as strong as the spread.
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
Same. Have you tried the Marmite cashews?
FrostyRydia@reddit
I haven't! Cashews are probably my favourite nut so with marmite they sound heavenly :)
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
Very dangerous for you then! 😋😋😋🤣

deadgoodundies@reddit
I love it.
I had an operation a few years ago and in the recovery room they always get you to eat something and usually offer toast and as soon as they said toast I said yes please but do you have any marmite, so there I am half out of it chomping down on some delicious toast and marmite.
I use it in a lot of cooking as well (goes great in a bolognese or chilli)
infantile-eloquence@reddit
I love it, had it since being a child as my mum loves it too. Dad hated it. I had it at work once and was chatting to the Philipino cleaner who was asking about it so I offered her some on toast and she clearly didn't like it - turns out she was expecting it to be like chocolate spread bless her 😅
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
That’s what the kids in my class thought! They thought it would be sweet and chocolatey.
snarkycrumpet@reddit
never really had it until I was about 16 and then fell in love. it's been over 30 years now and we're still very much in love, we get along very well at breakfast, lunch or snack time. very occasionally we spend time together at dinner now (mainly cottage pie nights.
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
Maybe you’d like a spoonful of Marmite melted in hot water as a hot drink before bed? Or possibly in bed if you really want to take your love affair further 😂

honestly, my thoughts of seeing it at breakfast help me drift into a warm, fulfilling sleep

Love it, had it regularly as a small kid. It’s great with butter on popcorn!
TurnoverStreet128@reddit
Marmite and Philadelphia sandwiches as a kid were the bee's knees. Absolutely love it.

It's just okay. I think it would be better used as an ingredient. I had marmite chicken at a Malaysian restaurant in Brum and it was divine.
Also I don't like anything else (jam, nutella etc) spread on toast but butter so that could be a factor.
Cute_Researcher_6578@reddit
I wouldn't buy it, but it someone put some on toast for me, I would eat it.
Do I love it? No. Do I hate it? No - But I guess this doesn't work for the marmite marketing machine :-)

Solid theory I reckon! Probably why you end up with ‘marmite families’ where everyone eats it
Broken_Woman20@reddit (OP)
Yes! 🙌🏻
