I’m not sure about England (Although I’d say they have something similar) but in Scotland if you are suspected of having either witnessed or committed an offence you are legally required to provide 5 pieces of information to the Police (Name, Date of birth, Place of birth, nationality, and address). This is covered by Section 13 of the Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act 1995. Those are the only 5 pieces of information you are legally required to provide. As a witness, there is no obligation to remain with the Police after providing these details and there is no requirement to say anything else to them once these details have been provided. If you are a suspect, the Police have powers under the same legislation to keep you at scene with them until such time as they can verify your details. Again, after these details have been provided there is no requirement to say anything else. Failing to provide those five details when asked is a criminal offence and you will be arrested and charged for this. If you are not suspected of having either witnessed or committed any offence, there is no requirement to provide any information at all

Why don't you use local buses/trains in your area ?

Cause driving is cheaper, easier, faster, and much more convenient. Not only that, but unlike pretty much every bus I’ve ever been on, my car doesn’t stink of urine because of a crackhead sitting behind me and there’s also no one making annoying phone calls on speakerphone

Most supermarkets also have policies in place where they only report a shoplifting if the value is above a certain amount (ASDA is £100 for example) or the perpetrator is a repeat offender

That’s because road traffic offences are almost always black and white (You’re either speeding or you’re not, you either have insurance or you don’t) and almost every vehicle has two big plates unique to that vehicle making tracking the owner down exceptionally easy. There is legislation that compels the owner to identify the driver of a certain vehicle at a certain time. No such legislation exists for thefts, and humans (typically) don’t have big number plates on the front and back telling Police where they can be found

Minimum 15 year sentence for anyone found in possession of a knife without lawful excuse. Streamline the court system, so that anyone found carrying a knife can be taken to custody, held for court, found guilty, sentenced, and transferred to prison to begin said 15 year sentence all within 24 hours of the person being found with the knife (Because there’s no disputing being found in possession of a knife, so why bother with expensive and drawn out court proceedings to reach the same goal) Bring back capital punishment, and anyone found guilty of a second offence gets sentenced to same

I wouldn’t say I learned any skills that I didn’t already have prior to entering the hospitality industry at the age of 15 no. Speak to the customer, write down their order, take it to the chef, take the food to the customer (or cook the food if the chefs off and you have to fill in for them), update everything on the tills, handle cash using basic arithmetic, ensure stock is replenished and orders placed to suppliers when needed and so on and so forth. Hospitality as an industry couldn’t be any easier to be honest. Really the only thing I learned that I didn’t know before was how to change kegs/gas bottles etc but that’s so painfully simple that I wouldn’t even class it as a skill

Logical_Summer7689@reddit

But you’re arguing that your expectation of the Police is that they somehow conjure up reasonable cause to enter a property or falsely obtain a warrant where they have no legal power to do so. If your expectation is that the Police lie, falsify evidence, and act unlawfully in order to investigate a crime you’ve reported then that’s on you, not them

That’s if you even hear it. They’re not exactly loud are they? And if the public don’t trust the Police because the Police aren’t willing to break the law in order to investigate crimes then that’s on the public

Again, AirTags pinging and showing as being in a certain location does not meet the threshold for sufficient evidence to enter the property. It doesn’t matter if the victim is standing at a door with the AirTag showing as being only a few feet away. They’re too unreliable to be used as evidence

It seems like the majority of people complaining want a totalitarian Police state where the Police can infringe upon their human rights with only the smallest piece of very inaccurate and circumstantial evidence. I can guarantee if we had that they’d be complaining that their door had just been smashed in so the Police could tear their flat apart searching for items that someone in a neighbouring property may have stolen

Logical_Summer7689@reddit

But they can’t reasonably point to an area which is exactly what the issue is. AirTags aren’t always accurate and in a block of flats being off by even 10 feet could be enough to encompass multiple separate flats. It’s because of that specific reason that all they can do in this scenario is knock on the doors and ask the occupants “did you break into a car and steal a suitcase”. Any crook with half a functioning brain cell is obviously going to deny it at which point that’s it over. No power to arrest anyone, no power to search anyone, and certainly no power to enter any and all properties until you find the stolen goods. If they had other evidence pointing towards a specific person such as an eye witness or a gumtree advert listing the items for sale then that changes things but until substantial enough evidence is obtained to meet the very stringent threshold, the Police are quite literally powerless in this scenario

Logical_Summer7689@reddit

Well I don’t really know what more you expect when the Police are required to operate within the boundaries of Uk law? Sure, in a different country with lesser restrictions on how law enforcement operates they could barge down doors and rough up innocent people until they find the correct flat with the correct culprit, but that wouldn’t exactly be fair on the innocent people would it?

An apple airtag has never been enough to justify entering a property given that they can be inaccurate to ranges big enough to encompass several properties, especially in a block of flats. And OPs post literally states that they tried to engage with the occupants of the flats, and that only one flat answered. They literally have no further powers here

Can you point out what legal powers exist that would allow the Police to force entry without a warrant to every single block of flats so that they can carry out a search for OPs stolen goods?

According to OPs post, the Police in this instance investigated the theft to the maximum extent of their legal powers. So I’m guessing you want them to act unlawfully? Is that it?

What do you expect the Police to do other than go to the doors and ask the people in the flats if it was them that stole the items? They literally have zero legal power or authority to do anything else
