Once you’re cruising and just above the clouds you can ask to go for a walk around outside, it’ll be fine if you take your shoes off or wear slippers. I’m surprised more passengers dont do it.

What is your opinion on School Uniform?

Posted by DaddyDawsonUser1@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 46 comments

InevitableReference6@reddit

I was born in the 60s when a lot of people wore uniforms, generally with a peaked cap. From bus conductors, meter readers, car park and park attendants, postmen, security staff etc. Most jobs don’t require a uniform these days, even the police dress casually with baseball caps etc. I really don’t see the point of School uniforms anymore. When I started office work you were supposed to ask the boss if you could take your jacket off in summer.

Is it unreasonable to travel within working hours to work?

I went from working in the office to full time at home in 2010, my contract stated that travel to the office for any reason was in my own time/expense. My manager was quite flexible though and some meetings were ‘all day’ so effectively I got to travel in work time. It depends on your manager/contract.

My uncle, his wife and kid went in the early 1970s and were followed by 2 other uncles. They were Hull Trawler-men and the industry shut down with no future for them. They went into building trade and electronics and did well. My cousin who was 4 when she went came back to Hull in her 30s and decided to stay, don’t know why. I would definitely have gone in the 80s if I’d had a trade/skill.

I’ve been on HP Instant Ink for just short of 8 years with the same £50 printer. I do about 30 to 50 pages a month, it was £1.99 a month and just gone up to £2.99 so I’ll be rethinking it. The printer no longer does photos as it won’t pick up thicker paper from the drawer anymore.

You’re right, it doesn’t, and I never said it did. This is one way that shit companies get away with things, make a simple statement and people fill in the rest for themselves…

I don’t think looking for an employer is the way to go. My brother was made redundant from sales in the 90s and started doing odd jobs, gardening, minor repairs, decorating for friends, neighbours etc. He had a mate who ran a double glazing firm and he’d do bits of decorating etc after they’d done a fitting, which lead onto other work. He did some basic short courses at college and got contacts through that. He was registered with the council and CRB checked to do security lock fitting, decorating etc for pensioners and got a lot of referrals through a local charity/drop in centre. He’s not made his fortune but has retired now at 70 and made an ok living for over 30 years.

I grew up in the 70s a tourist/seaside area and at 14/15it was easy to earn £5 in a morning or afternoon. A pint of lager was 36p in the snooker club and I was just turned 15 we were ‘allowed’ two halves each max. I think cig’s were 20p or so. An LP was £3 and that’s basically what I spent money on.

If you’re able to, you can claim ‘constructive dismissal’ via an employment tribunal. Much more satisfying. Look it up online. There are fees but you can claim exemption and represent yourself at virtually nil cost. There are exclusions and time limits so check them. You will need to have kept some records. I have successfully followed this route in the past.

If current trends continue I think you’ll just walk into a shop, see there’s nothing in it, or nothing you can afford, and just walk out again. Seriously, there’ll be an entry charge or membership for some shops, possibly refundable against purchases? Keep the peasants out. Deposit £100 to go in the Apple Store etc. Or when there’s mass food shortages you’ll only get in Tesco’s etc with a club card.

We looked at these many years ago and got accepted, there were only two options for a mortgage and both pulled out of that market shortly before we signed, HSBC was one. Ground rent was a factor, there were very high service charges for flats, we chose a house for that reason. There would be difficulties if/when we eventually wanted to sell, to a very limited market. You could only sell via Orbit Housing at that time. We would have Responsibility for 100% of the repair costs, very limited mortgage options at generally higher rates than a ‘normal’ mortgage. Prices for the 2 bed house were about 20% higher than nearby similar ones. We were offered rental at 2/3 of the market rate which was a very good deal so we rented it for about 3 years.

What would you invest in?

It depends what you find exciting to be honest, some people would be orgasmic about finding a mint penny black or even a pre 47 sixpence. Plus, They’re almost guaranteed to go up in value. A neighbour of mine in the late 80s had been collecting new matchbox cars and stuff since he was a kid and sold about a third of them for £10k. He loved the excitement of getting a new one each week or so. I don’t think he started off at 10 expecting to buy a house with them when he was 50 and made redundant.

Having watched a lot of Grand Designs I’d say a ballpark figure of £150k will end up at about £3 million, depends if you want the swimming pool and disco in the basement or on the roof… Also windows - if you can do without then you can 1/2 your budget and build time!

Can my friend (that lives with me) still get Universal Credit despite my Higher-Rate tax-payer status?

Posted by HopefullyRight9619@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 10 comments

InevitableReference6@reddit

Your friend should be able to get universal credit as you are not related and not partners. Your income is irrelevant. Housing costs are unlikely to be paid if she does not have a rent liability - it depends on the wording in the tenancy agreement and you’d need proper advice on that. Council Tax is normally a joint liability if you are joint tenants so she could probably claim for 50% of that. You’d need to claim that via the council.

Do hospitals keep medical records and personal information?

InevitableReference6@reddit

In theory they do, sometimes. In my experience they just get ‘lost’ and every time you see a different consultant you have to start again giving them your medical history. GP records are equally shit nowadays. My current one has some records from the last 18 months or so but nothing of the previous 50+ years that have ‘disappeared’ The whole system of records has simply stopped working over the last few years.

As a tenant, should I buy home insurance?

Posted by tpnat45@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 13 comments

InevitableReference6@reddit

Tenants are often liable for things like broken windows, check your tenancy agreement and contents insurance policy as that’s generally included in contents insurance for some reason. I know this because I once accidentally broke an extremely expensive window in my rented flat in a listed building and luckily I was fully covered.

It seems mad nowadays but my older sister started her nursing training at 16, in the 1970s and was on the wards. My brother started an engineering apprenticeship at 15 in 1968 and was working on a lathe at 16. You could join the army at 15 1/2. My dad was in Berlin for his 17th Birthday in 1946! He did add a year to his age to join up but he was sensible enough to wait till the war was over!

If you’re renting you can check your tenancy agreement. I’m in a Housing Association and my neighbour smoked outside, under our window. I asked her and to be fair she did move away to the end of the paved area, which was fine. She then asked the landlord for an outside ashtray in her new ‘smoking area’ They then came back and advised that the whole outside area up to the road had been designated ‘No Smoking’ so smokers can now only smoke inside their flat or out on the road! Also look on the Council website as some consider even legal smoking ASB if it affects you and your landlord may be required to mitigate the effects of your neighbours smoking.
