Is devops/site reliability engineer, platform engineer and similar jobs, same thing as sys admin? At some websites when you filter by sys admin it shows these jobs. Can you maybe talk about this? Thank you.

Google never really had the concept of a system administrator like Microsoft does where it’s someone’s job only to support systems. though at Google we did a lot of what sysadmins do at most companies but on a far greater scale. Most of us were also developers who moved to the SRE role when they formalized it. Before it was the developers pushing their own code to prod and supporting it. The idea was the developers who were writing the applications were working with SRE in the same building, often sitting in the same pod (group of desks) to create a scalable and automated solution from the ground up. We also reported up the same org. We never logged into individual systems for any reason. everything was done by code. Deployments would go to G and push in parallel to 50k devices to start and scale up from there across the globe. But that was 15+ years ago I worked there so I’m sure AI is doing it all now.🤣

I have an iPhone for work and personal. I’ve been an Android phone and windows desktop user most of my life but the company had huge discounts of Apple products so I went all in with the phone, watch, laptop and earbuds. The hardware really is top notch, the earbuds fit well, battery life is long on the MacBook Air, and everything integrates. But the software is kind of ass. Everything seems just not complete or quite a polished as similar products from other companies. I say all that but I’ve been using Apple for a year now, i guess day to day the OS doesn’t mean much to me anymore.

About five years ago I was working at a regional company with a couple hundred employees. They had a modest DC we decommissioned when everything moved to SaaS. What to do with the hard drives? The owner invited us out to his farm and we spent the weekend shooting them. Then they went to the local scrap yard.

My company was acquired

It’s hard telling. Some companies will setup a migration plan work with you folks who were acquired and eventually bring you into the company. Or they just want the IP and couldn’t give a shit about your architecture beyond how to get the data. In that case you will be looking for a new job in a year or two.

25+ plus years working in tech and never been on a real job interview.

A lot has changed in IT over 25 years. Back in 2000 when this was new and exciting just being able to spell MCSE would get you a good paying job or being able to write hello world and you were pretty much a developer. Companies were hiring like crazy, interviews were simple (of course we heard about Google and their questions but non of that for an admin) many times a buddy saying there’s an opening where works and you were hired. Most of who got in at that time and stayed in similar companies or roles tended to just float from one position or job to the next. Yep I’m old and can talk about the good ole days.

I never fully realized just how much the H1B is abused until I started working at a multi national corporation.

Get to know the sysadmin folks at your org. A big part of corporate advancement is knowing the right people and not being a dick. An overworked manager looking to fill a position is more than happy to hire someone internally if it means not scheduling several interviews.
