People who don't put their jackets in closets or closed rooms when cooking. Result: Just when it's almost pleasant on the bus because it's quiet, here comes an avid garlic aficionado to budge up beside me. Eye-watering. I bet their dinners are fantastic, tbf.

Aubergine. This may be an unpopular opinion, but when the only vegetarian option includes a slimy slab of aubergine I would rather gnaw on a stale bun.

I am old and confirm that not only must you shout at the screen, we used to bring toast, rice, cards (for sorrow and pain), newspapers, and water spray bottles, although none of this is probably allowed now, understandably.

Counterpoint: The only time I had the opportunity to interact with a waiter in Paris, he was a dear and treated me like I was his favourite auntie. I don't think it was his first day on the job as he was almost psychic in his ability to swoop in and anticipate what I would want next.

How do I offer my seat to someone on the train/bus without indirectly implying they’re old?

Posted by lizysonyx@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 65 comments

Evakatrina@reddit

You did the right thing in a reapectful way. No worries at all. There's a side conversation here about what to say. I've been offered a seat a few times (I'm old) without any words. Eye contact while starting to get up, with raised eyebrows. I usually nod gratefully because my knees are not fit for purpose. They immediately stand up. Londoners can be incredibly thoughtful and kind sometimes.

I switched to voip for a while. The worst. No emergency benefit, dependent on modem, and now won't work on wifi outside the country. Have tried. Plus, I still got spam calls!

Do you still have a landline?

Posted by londonbluesox@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 530 comments

Evakatrina@reddit

I don't have one anymore but they are good to have in emergencies. Sometimes mobile networks get overwhelmed, modems act up, or there are places in your home that are out of range. The downside is spam calls, which prompted me to drop my landline. If they get that under control, when I get older I am definitely getting a landline again.

What cheap item massively changed your life?

In short, pour a bit of boiling water onto coffee, let it do its thing, push it through, and add more water. Long version: - Put a filter in the cap and screw it onto the big tube - set the big tube on a sturdy mug - put a scoop of coffee into the tube and shake it a bit to settle it - pour a little boiling water into the tube over the coffee and stir it with the paddle - push the smaller tube into the big tube slowly and carefully, creating a vacuum, just far enough that it stays in place - spend a couple of minutes making breakfast or learning a K-pop dance move - push the smaller tube the rest of the way down - add more boiling or very hot water and stir. I also froth some milk and pour that in it. Looks bougie. No sugar needed. To clean it. Unscrew the cap, hold the tube over the bin, and push the "puck" of coffee the rest of the way out. Rinse everything. That's it. There are also YouTube videos on how to do it but after the first time I am managing it at 4:30 a.m. while I am still mostly asleep.

Why do people think private land is a "Dog Walking Field"?

Posted by poke_pants@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 660 comments

Evakatrina@reddit

The CROW Act provides direction on this, though. A dog walking field is not the same as someone's land that's sometimes used by dog walkers. Even if it's access land, there are restrictions regarding dogs (and litter). Unless I'm missing something, it's excepted land now in any case, as it appears there are plans for development. It's an understandable disappointment for people who have been using the land for their dogs, but I think it's a stretch to claim entitlement.

Would you tell a sibling if their child was overweight, or in danger of becoming so?

Posted by Captain_Kruch@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 74 comments

Evakatrina@reddit

Absolutely not. Children go through phases, and the last thing they need is to have family members expressing judgement on their appearance. The child is already probably aware of your disapproval. Inspiration to activity in an organic, positive way would be a healthy choice.

Not well, but thank you for asking! Fans, windows open at night, staying hydrated. It's almost impossible to talk myself into going out but sometimes it helps. The shade is nice if there's a breeze. Back to the extremely air-conditioned office tomorrow!
