4am crisis where I could feel myself slipping into dispair tbh. Trying to figure out if I'd be fucked or just unlucky, Then I thought does that even matter now. Yes, I was fucked I was unlucky. Nothing you can do to cnange that, but we can maybe affect the future a little bit.

That is an earily family story. Although, the more I think about it - the less I'm inclined to think that a 3 week holiday would have made much of a difference for me. I already had the fast moving clusterf\*ck of a cancer going on the rampage. I think they already knew I was a bit of a lost cause. And, honestly - I'm at a point now were I think they made the right choice. 3 weeks of recovery for me and a tube in my throat would've been awful. This is a much better send off.

I have had trouble swallowinv since the diagnosis. Yes. But if you've got the scan you're halfway there. They are looking. If it's there they'll find something. My problem was they never looked.

That's an inaccurate assumption. I stopped working three weeks ago. I'm not out of date. I am very aware of the power of AI. However, right now thd race to make money is hindering it's true potential. They will find a way. But it's not there yet.

Honestly? No. I don't think they got up that morning snd thought 'I wonder who I'll kill today.' It was a mistake. 99 times out of 100, I bet it wouldn't have mattered. Besides. If you've got ten mins left. What do you want to be doing? Laughing and loving or getting angry and sad?

I think what went on was lack of time, care and attention. Overworked drs. Pissed off ppl who are too fed up to care. Complacency. Total misunderstanding of the menopause. 90% of the time, I'd bet their advice would've been right.

So. Yeah. I worked in IT. AI should not be trusted 100%. It's a tool. Don't think its infallible. Quite a lot of it is impressive auto correct and sentence predictions. The other stuff has been trained on the Internet. And I dunno if you've noticed but the Internet is full of mistakes and slop.

Thank you. To be fair, the hospice has been incredible. It's taken do much worry away. I would suggest that everyone finds their local one and donates whatever they can. I've arranged some fundraising for the one im in. But everyone needs them. Go find yours. Play their lotto games. Donate your old shoes to their shops! Give them a quid of the change from your junk draw.

I'm not religious either. But I am seeing crazy coincidences every where. And, I know energy can't be destroyed, just changed. So I'll just be something else. As for the nhs, I still sm grateful for it. It could be better. But it's fixable. If they keep it out of private equity hands. Profit can never be it's priority. People and efficiency. But not profit. People and profit are why we're here. They've already snuck it in by the back door.

I think it was around a year from first symptom. Swollen neck. That came and went initially, but then stayed. Hoarse voice Tiredness. It was a dentist triggered the rapid access referral. He was clear. There was no sign of an infection. The swelling was enough for a scan for him.

My neck swelled a bit. Kept losing my voice, or going raspy but it would come back. Then tiredness. It was all non scary, a bit annoying and irritating. I will say this- it was my dentist who actually recognised how serious it was. So always get your check-ups, and ask them for a neck check.

We do not have free health care in the UK. We all collectively pay into it. It's just free at the point of service. For everyone who needs it. Thats not a bad thing. Those US tests were run on me. The problem was the process wasn't followed snd it was too late. That's a sloppy process and poor training. And a lack of public awareness. That seems fixable.

Do you think it is wrong for managers to prohibit staff speaking to each other in a foreign language on their break?

I think this is likely a way to protect the company from hostile working environment claims. It doesn't matter if they're talking about last night's telly and it's innocent. It excludes staff who can't speak that language, and that can lead to animosity and distrust. (As you've seen in your workplace).

My boyfriend's father calls me a slut, is that a cultural thing?

Hi. I'm British, from an area everest calling someone a c-word in the right tone is considered a greeting. In fact, it's considered a greeting for someone you are very comfortable with. (You don't do it with strangers). Some of my fellow countrymen can take this too far... and this particular instance seems a bit weird. However - It is really all about the delivery. If it feels friendly and jovial, it's probably meant in jest. He could be overcompensating because he's not sure how to act in the case of his sons boyfriend, and all his usual insults don't seem right. I would talk to your boyfriend to see what his reading of it is. And if you don't like it, ask him what he would do to get it to change.

I would email them (so you have it in writing) and ask what the policy is on disability related absences. It's usually different to the normal sickness policy and students are offered a "Reasonable adjustments plan" or something similar to accomodate additional needs. Then - when you know what the policy is exactly (including how it works with student loans etc), talk to your disability team and make sure all of your lecturers know you have registered a disability, and make it clear when your absence is because of it.

I think people all get too protective about "food culture" Sharing food and recipes is a fundamental thing that brings us all together. (In ancient times you'd starve to death if you couldnt figure out what to eat locally - so it was a really, really nice thing to do).

I watched a really interesting short documentary about why people in Japan aren't as overweight as UK/USA. They have vending machines and convenience shops with prepacked food everywhere, but it's healthy. And part of their culture is not wasting food (because that's respectful of the plants and animals that gave up their life to feed you). That has a knock on effect for convenience shopping eg. You can get a drink for 50p that is one serving, or two servings for 70p. Most people will choose the one serving because that's all they need - value for money doesn't come into it.

I was going to launch into a "Tut, how DARE they" rant but then I read your question properly. I think that there is a definite lack of passing on skills to younger generations when it comes to cooking. I'm Gen X and my mum didnt have time to show me very much - our shepherds pie was mince out of a tin and Smash. I was 36 before I learned to cook from Youtube and TV. Now, I love cooking and experimenting with both traditional and international dishes. I cooke most things from scratch, but I'm not immune to convience food on a weeknight. I've been trying to increase my sons cooking skills so he can eat better at Uni, but deep down I know he'll live on oven chips and ramen noodles because it's quick and easy. I'm becoming more and more convinced that our national dish is really chicken nuggets, chips and beans.

Little bit of salt. I wouldn't bother with a packet mix. You really, really don't need it.

"Alright?" does not necessarily mean that I'm asking if you are OK or not. I might just be saying hello. The secret is to reply "Yeah, you?" and then you find out if the other person actually wants a conversation or not.

When it’s hot do you open your windows or shut your curtains?

Posted by fundytech@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 561 comments

Disastrous-Design503@reddit

Shut curtains stops the room heating up so much. I only open the windows on the cool side of the house. As soon as it cools outside, I open all of them for a draft. When it was REALLY hot outside , I covered the windows on the south side with white towels to reflect the heat too and kept all the windows closed. It was definitely cooler inside.

We used to get this. The only way I've found that stops it is running all wadhes on a hot cycle that has a steam srction till its gone,, We also do a deep dishwasher cleaner minimum once a month. I use the hotpoint sachets - they seem pretty good. I have also found the expensive tablets can help, along with opening the door to dry on economy modes.
