It's worth posting this again, it explains how UK electricity prices are calculated: [https://www.carbonbrief.org/factcheck-why-expensive-gas-not-net-zero-is-keeping-uk-electricity-prices-so-high/](https://www.carbonbrief.org/factcheck-why-expensive-gas-not-net-zero-is-keeping-uk-electricity-prices-so-high/) . Essentially (and unfortunately), in the UK electricity prices are linked to gas prices. ' The UK’s electricity market operates using a system known as ā€œmarginal pricingā€. This means that all of the power plants running in each half-hour period are paid the same price, set by the final generator that has to switch on to meet demand, which is known as the ā€œmarginalā€ unit. While this is unfamiliar to many people, marginal pricing is far from unique to the UK’s electricity market. It is used in most electricity markets in Europe and around the world, as well as being widely used in commodity markets in general. Still, the UK’s current electricity mix means that gas is almost always the marginal fuel, even though it only accounts for a third of generation overall. (In contrast, the marginal fuel in many other European countries is hydro. In France, it tends to be nuclear, while in Germany it is split between coal, gas and hydro.) The result is that the UK’s wholesale electricity prices track wholesale gas prices almost perfectly, as shown in the figure below.'

Russia Looking West

*Is anyone else hearing that Russia is modeling plans for a movement on Baltic states as a response to France’s nuclear expansion east?* No, I haven't heard anything. I guess news about Russia 'modeling plans for a movement on Baltic states as a response to France’s nuclear expansion east' would probably be classic Russian disinformation justifying Russian actions as a response to supposed Western aggression. In reality the changes in France's nuclear policy are not as radical as they may have been portrayed. Essentially, if French nuclear forces are dispersed throughout Europe it strengthen's France's second-strike capabilities increasing in that way deterrence (in simple terms, if you attack me first trying to eliminate all my nuclear weapons, you will not suceed and thus I will be able to hit you back with my remaining nuclear forces). See also: [https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cj4zlnezrl7o](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cj4zlnezrl7o) . 'This would allow France's Strategic Air Forces (FAS) to "spread out across the depth of the European continent... and thus complicate the calculations of our adversaries", the president said. (...) There will be no explicit "guarantee" given to partner countries, and it is the president of France who will retain sole decision-making power over when to fire a nuclear missile. The aim remains to convince potential adversaries that "if they have the audacity to attack France... there will be an unsustainable price to be paid," the president said. Until now there has been a deliberate vagueness about what France regards as its "vital interests", an attack on which would trigger a nuclear response. In recent years governments have hinted that "vital interests" could also include interests in Europe. With Macron's "advanced deterrence", this concept has been given further shape – though in accordance with the general theory of deterrence nothing is spelled out.'

I like the one that street sellers sell in Thessaloniki. It doesn't have any milk in it, just added cinnamon on top. I also like the 'Olympos' brand salep that supermarkets sell in Greece, it has between 4-12% salep powder and spices (cinnamon, clove, all-spice, etc.) but no milk. The sale in Turkey is nice and comforting during winter but it's too milky for me, it's like I am drinking hot milk with cinnamon.

Hm, usually it's the Turkish one that comes with powdered milk and it's very sweet. The saleps I had in Greece didn't have any milk. For example, the street salep sellers in Thessaloniki only add cinnamon and the liquid is brown-ish in colour.

I tried recently 'Morrisons The Best Douro Reserva' (Portugal), great wine. 'Apothic' (USA) is also very good (very smooth and a bit spicy). If you are going for whites, 'Oyster Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc' (New Zealand) is nice. I also like 'Morrisons The Best Alvarinho' (Portugal). For a more unique/interesting white, you can go for an 'Alsace Gewurztraminer', it's very floral.

Take a look here: https://archive.ph/fgZ91 "That points to another problem with the project: the way Parliament legislated for it. The bill in 2017 which gaveĀ hs2 Ltd, a public body, the power to acquire land detailed so many specifications that it ran to 50,000 pages. Critically, it gave councils the power to petition for design changes and to hold up work if they were unhappy. Having asked for tunnels, for example, councils then tried to stop them by denying access routes for lorries. One case brought by Buckinghamshire council ran for nine months before the High Court threw it out. The council could be litigious partly because it had 15 dedicated planning officers paid for byĀ hs2."

At the same time, by framing their lives as an upward struggle against the odds, these interviewees misrepresent their subsequent life outcomes as more worthy, more deserving and more meritorious."

Which UK supermarket do you think does the best fruit and veg?

Posted by Logan_Mcallister@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 68 comments

DimiRPG@reddit

Whether fruits and vegetables are seasonal and whether they grow locally is usually a better indicator of quality than the supermarket brand. E.g., winter tomatoes from Netherlands are tasteless regardless of supermarket brand. British tomatoes, when in season, are fantastic in most supermarkets. I am usually happy with my local Morrison's (which is a big Morrison's, not one of the small ones). I often shop from Lidl as well but not for fruits and vegetables, the quality is a bit lacking.
