Using the word "smoke" in communications is now a faux-pas? A second client has now said we can't use terms like Smoke Test.

Release the magic smoke - common in alarm panel installing when they use the wrong voltage power transformer... like when the old panel was 24v and the new one is 16.5 and they didn't change the transformer

To be fair, MSP help desk is often evicted to be a field tech, system admin, network guru, a/v tech, electrician, and a courier, all for tier 1 hd wages

You, sir or madam, are delusional if you think there has been no change. The tariffs alone are going to destroy several industries. The Label printers we use in production cost $1200 in January are now over $2000

Stuff like this happens all the time. Two similarly experienced techs can look at the same issue from different angles. One of them might just have seen the issue before, or even get "lucky" and find the solution

Msp work. Went on-site for a hotel with no internet. Comcast Business account. Call, they bounce me around, can't find account. Someone eventually finds it but can't do jack as it was aComcast "Hospitality" account and needed to go to another team. Guycwas nice enough to stay on thr line and check in with me every 15 minutes or so while waiting for "hospitality" team to answer. After about 45 minutes of waiting he gets annoyed and sends a reboot command to the modem... site comes back up.

I’m thinking about abandoning my IT career and going full office space

Sounds like what you need is a position that is a step or two above help desk and not an MSP. I'm currently a Plant IT field support tech for a food manufacturing company at one of their sites. They have a Service Desk that tickets are supposed to get routed through, and escalated events are vetted by my bosses before I even get a call when it comes to after-hours work. I do still get emails and walk ups from users, but generally, it's for a narrow set of issues that I've seen before. It's been a massive mental health improvement from the MSP grind, and it's accompanying imposter syndrome when it comes to working with whoever er just happens to call from whatever company we're supporting that week

This happened to a friend a couple of years ago. He calls me over to figure out why his system won't boot. He had gotten a new keyboard, and the old one was still plugged in. I did the old "unplug everything except monitor and power" method and determined his old keyboard was the issue

Do end users not understand how a dual monitor works?

Posted by AlexTheTrashman@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 450 comments

DamiosAzaros@reddit

Nope. Fairly technical user, he tried multiple troubleshooting steps before calling. he even looked in Device Manager to see if anything showed up there as an obvious issue. While I was downloading firmware updates he connected the monitor and adapter to another laptop and it worked there, confirming it wasn't the monitor or the adapter failing

DamiosAzaros@reddit

For concerns of not being alerted about new and/or leaving employees: If feasible in your organization, you can try to get a weekly report of active employees from HR. Run that report against the previous week's list and set it to alert on any users not in both lists

I have a 27in 1080 and a 27in 1440. The 1440 is so much better. I wouldn't go any bigger unless it was in 4k though. My work setup is two 1080 ultrawides stacked with a 4k to the right of those and its almost enough real estate

Been there myself. Your "role" is help desk support, but you're expected to do a bunch of sysad stuff at HD pay because the actual sysad is too busy to be bothered with it.
