What did British people eat everyday back in the 50s, 60s and 70s?

Burgers in a bun and those stupid skinny chips was DEFINITELY (American) foreign muck πŸ˜‚ I forget why, but we went for a Wimpy burger once. I think we were supposed to be going to Little Chef (yes, my nan and grandad would literally drive to Little Chef as a treat πŸ˜‚) but it was closed. But anyway. The Wimpy Burger Debacle was brought up at least once a month for the next 15 years πŸ˜‚ For about a decade afterwards, I could have told you to the penny what Grandad paid for those burgers and fries. They were NOT impressed

Nothing will ever taste so amazing in my life, ever again I've had korma since, but nothing will compare to the first time I had that slightly spicy sweetness

I didn't eat pasta that wasn't tinned spaghetti hoops until 1994 πŸ˜‚ "Foreign muck", my nan called it. In 1993, my stepsister and I had a very transgressive chicken korma delivered while our parents were out. There would have been HELL to pay if we'd got caught, we smuggled the takeaway wrappers into a bin 5 streets away like we were disposing of a murder weapon

Do you use the phrase tonneing it for someone driving really fast, if not what is your go to phrase for someone driving fast?

My Dad was one of those ton-up kids for exactly 7 months, then he had a nasty fall off the back of a friend's bike that cheesegratered his back and buttocks and never got on a motorbike again 🀣 Apparently the hardest part was trying to hide it from his Mam (my nan - turns out she knew but decided that the pain was punishment enough, he wasn't supposed to be hanging out with that particular friend)

Yep, I used to see weird 3D geometric shapes floating around the bedroom, 2 or 3 times a week. I'd wake my partner up and try to show him but he could never see them. I thought I was going out of my mind, or maybe I had a brain tumour, was it ghosts, aliens, a moving doorway to another dimension? Then one day I watched a science programme where they showed that magnetic waves could act on the retina to cause visual disturbances. So I went upstairs and unplugged the ghetto blaster with the big magnetic speakers that was on the bedside table RIGHT next to my goddamn head while I was sleeping... and never saw them again. Thank god I never went to a doctor, it was the early 2000s and lord only knows what horrendous meds I'd have been put on.

Also can I ask why you're waiting until tomorrow, when Streetlink will probably get someone out to him tonight? You said he's not even got a blanket. Honestly my mind is absolutely blown that you are so concerned for your own safety when you're not even anywhere near there, and not at all concerned about a fellow human being out in that weather.

Jesus Christ, get a grip. There are two locked doors between you and him. What, are you afraid you're going to catch Homeless Cooties or something? He could literally die out there. Contact Street link and leave him alone. He's doing you no harm whatsoever at this point. https://thestreetlink.org.uk/start

That's awful man, I'm sorry. I would definitely report it on the non-emergency line And unfortunately a lot of the advice out there for stress and depression is tailored to people who live in leafy suburbs so I wouldn't recommend doing half the stuff they recommend. All very well saying "Go for a walk/run" when you live in Richmond, but dragging yourself through dog shit, broken glass, needles and teenagers is a very different thing. I found exercising in front of the telly much better, follow along your favourite YouTuber. Stay safe.

Oh yeah, it's horrible. Being paid a good wage to do low effort tasks in a comfortable environment. So many times, I lie awake at night and WISH SO HARD that I was back in one of my old jobs. The politics and sloppy H&S of the lab 😭😭😭 Fucking up my knees and back at the chemical plant 😭😭😭 or getting up to my elbows in a grown man's shit at 6am at the care home I used to work in before uni 😭😭😭 And all the times I worked with the public! 😭😭😭 Take me back there! Please! 🀣🀣🀣 "I'm a lucky son of a gun! I sleep 8 hours, And I work 8 hours, That leaves 8 hours for fun"

Am an office worker. Can confirm it's pretty awesome. Even more so now that I work from home I did a Biochemistry degree in my late 30s because I thought I needed to save the world or something, and did 4 years of lab and industrial jobs before thinking "fuck this, back to the office and pass the Chocolate Digestives please and thank you"

If you have serious convictions and are currently employed, what do you do?

Posted by Chanson_Riders@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 40 comments

BasicallyClassy@reddit

Not myself, but Chevron will employ people with convictions as Trainee Traffic Management Operatives (the people who stick the cones on the road, basically) It's hard physical work and you'll need to be okay with staying away from home, housesharing - sometimes even room sharing - with a bunch of hairy arsed ruffians. It's a bit of a barracks atmosphere, work hard, drink hard. You absolutely cannot do drugs, though. There are regular random tests. However, the pay is really decent and there is genuine opportunity for progression. You can obviously write well and are intelligent enough, so you could make supervisor within a couple of years. https://www.chevrontm.com/careers/developing-the-next-generation

Without further details, my instinct is that you're being really disloyal. You don't have to agree with your parents but don't go running them down to the neighbours, either. You cross paths with your parents far more often than your neighbours

I would reach out to your hiring manager for clarification. It's easier since you're not from the UK, you can easily say "just to check my understanding is aligned with UK cultural norms, does smart professional mean long sleeve shirt and suit trousers, or do you tend more towards chinos and polo shirts?" These days, asking questions when you're not sure is considered to be a good trait
