It's difficult to answer, i'm using this word because i'm presumably talking with programmers here. Technical ones might be anything that requires enough experience as well as wisdom, and from some point onward we just can't rely on AI for that.

Alright, I see it as a drug more than anything. Some might use this drug reasonably and their abilities won't be therefore limited. There is this aspect that i think you are overlooking, it is very very addictive in how dumb it can make you, relatively to what will be required for you to remain "competitive" in the long run.

How can companies adopt AI coding tools in a way that is sustainable for software, engineering teams and developers? Mistakes that are happening now.

On an individual level? Don't allow more AI into your life than the amount dictated by your employer. There are already devs right now that forgot how to code, they will also forget how to think at some point. Don't allow yourself to become that i guess, ai is not going to solve the tough problems of our profession anyway.

One issue here is that doing what the majority does with these tools won't differentiate you, and we are heading towards a future of many low skilled ai driven devs fighting for scraps. I don't see how relying on AI will help you long term to be honest.

You are saying that you are a senior engineer and can't effectively code what is asked of you (no matter the reason). I mean they might ask for tricky stuf on the intervews of course, but you do realize your situation is kind of shameful?

The thing is AI reliance overall isn't going away, simply because quality is not a priority in this industry.  You wanna do proper programming with high standards? That would be your own projects, outside of "working" hours.

Is it me or have interviews gotten way more convoluted even with more experience?

Posted by skidmark_zuckerberg@reddit | ExperiencedDevs | View on Reddit | 212 comments

Additional_Rub_7355@reddit

I didn't mean it in currency terms. They figure out that devs produce shitty software, and it needs to be less shitty, so the way to achieve that in their mind is to look for "better" devs, whatever that means.

Additional_Rub_7355@reddit

Think carefully here, software development is largely a disaster. There are many devs out there that should had never become one in the first place, but the economy thought otherwise.

Let's keep it simple. A junior is supposed to learn, right? Well they aren't learning anything it seems, and they certainly aren't using their brains much if agents do the thinking.

Additional_Rub_7355@reddit

In order to get this feeling back you need to work on your own terms. I mean outside of the job, if you can find time to do programming the way you want, and on the things you care about, that would be great.

AI coding will continue taking over for a simple reason: nobody cares about quality anymore, customers just accept poorer quality products, say thank you, and pay a premium on top. This industry is producing shit and nobody really cares, they just want to produce it asap.

What is the basis for the widespread belief that software is now "zero-cost", and that it can be autonomously developed from beginning to end with zero human involvement?

Additional_Rub_7355@reddit

Lots of professionals say that it makes them way more productive, and obviously most software developed is not for public consumption anyway so you won't see it. Other than that i don't see further evidence to suggest that development has become cheaper overall.

Nobody cares about quality software nowadays, so people just vibe code everything now. There are only a handful companies that actually care (safety critical systems, payments maybe etc.) everything else is just vibe coded now.
