Zhukovsky Airport on Google Maps is a treat (do they offer tours by any chance?)

It’s neat seeing the aircraft that the Soviets copied from western designs. Like in many cases they are pretty close but have differences. I would love to know more about why some of the differences emerged in designs. Was it because the designers thought they found a better way to do it? Maybe different materials resulted in different designs? Neat stuff. It’s a shame how poorly historical artifacts are treated now.

I can't remember where I read it or saw it, but the reason why their space shuttle looks so similar to ours is that they had spies in NASA stealing the plans. On a project that big it would be really hard to get everything so they didn't. I think the FBI also caught on to it and was planting false information to purposely sabotage their design. Whether these were factors in their space shuttle not being very successful is anyone's guess.

At the beginning of the Space Shuttle program, Soviet engineers looked at how Space Shuttle was advertised, i.e. how it was supposed to provide cheap and frequent access to space. Then they looked the design of Space Shuttle and how the program was going and they immediately (correctly) concluded that all that "cheap and frequent access to space" talk was bullshit that is never going to happen. So, Soviets being Soviets, came to conclusion that Space Shuttle must have some other secret military purpose. Of course, Soviet leadership panicked, and ordered the Soviet industry to produce the vehicle with the same capabilities. If you get the same requirements, you will get a similar design. It is as simple as that.

The closest f-22 like vehicles I can think of are the SU-57 and KF-21, other than concept aircraft like the tempest. The J-20 is very different in design.
