A big bus stops at a roadside eatery.

The passengers flood inside the eatery and as they take their respective seats the driver calls the manager aside and explains, "Look sir, we're from the mental asylum down the road. I'm taking the inmates for a ride. When they're done eating they will insist on paying with bottle caps like they do inside. Please humor them and accept their payments. I'll clear the entire check at the end." So, as each passenger finishes eating and pays with bottle caps, the manager solemnly accepts them. After they were all seated in the bus, the driver approaches the manager who presents the bill to him. The driver carefully scans the bill. "Excellent! I'm grateful for your cooperation. You don't know how hard it is to handle these people. Now, would you have change for a hubcap?"

A bus full of people stops at a road side eatery. The driver explains to the bar tender that the people communicate with hand signs. And they will use 1 finger for a burger 2 for soup, 3 for coke and 4 for coffee. Things are going well and the signs are working well. The waiters are serving the food and the people are eating. Then one young man stands in front of the bar and uses some unfamiliar signs. The goes through a pattern, pauses and then repeats it. One by one the other people stand next to him and sign too. Some do the same signs, and some others stand apart with a different pattern of signs and hand clapping. In a few minutes all of the people are signing in front of the bar. The bar tender panics and finds the bus driver. He shows him all of the people standing and signing. The bus driver laughs, and says, first they were signing, and not they are singing.     \-Check the spelling if you missed it.

There was a case in Kenya, I think it was, about 20 years ago. A bus driver was sending a group of mental patients to another hospital, but they all ran away at a red light. The resourceful driver pulled up to a bus stop and said he had to go to the depot, but would send everyone to [a main destination] for free, since it was on his way. Then he drove to the hospital and said the patients were all here, but watch out, they’re delusional liars. Took three days to straighten out.

My favorite true story about psychiatric hospitals-in 1993 there was a hospital in CA being investigated for insurance fraud. There were 60 agents there, all day, and they attempted to order delivery from Dominos, but couldn't, because the worker didn't believe there were a group of FBI agents at the nuthouse. From Snopes- n 1993, the FBI was assisting the Department of Health and Human Services in investigating health care fraud. A medical organization that operated psychiatric hospitals in nine different cities had come under suspicion, and law enforcement agencies had scheduled coordinated raids on all nine of those facilities to take place on the same day (so that none of the hospitals could alert the others). The unexpectedly high volume of records seized in a morning raid on the Southwood Psychiatric Hospital in Chula Vista, California, meant that the investigation there turned into an all-day affair. When the agent in charge of the operation realized his men were running on empty after long hours with no food, he attempted to order pizza from a local delivery outfit, placing the call now immortalized in this piece. Contrary to what is stated in most versions of this piece, though, the FBI was not taping all of the hospital's calls that day; the conversation reproduced above was reconstructed from the memories of agents present at the event. And yes, the FBI men did get their pizzas, but the food was not delivered to the hospital — several agents had to drive over to the restaurant and pick up their pies.
