Why do they do this?
Why in the hell do 4 wheelers take up a pump for trucks when they can just get diesel on the auto side? After he fueled he walked inside the Loves without even pulling up. These assholes drive me crazy. Sorry for the dirty windshield. I cleaned it when I finally got to the pump.

DEF is diesel exhaust fluid. It's injected into the exhaust after NOx is turned into nitrogen and water to create ammonia and CO2. Short answer, it turns more harmful gasses into less harmful gasses in order to produce cleaner emissions.

laddergoatperp@reddit

View on Reddit #10702423

Paramedickhead@reddit

As it should be. Diesel is easier to refine than gas. There’s numerous reasons that diesel isn’t as popular in the US. One of the first things that comes to mind is climate. In the northern parts of the US, there’s a significant portion of the year that diesel alone will Couple that with the knowledge level of the American public who know nothing about the vehicle that they drive and you wind up with people opting for gasoline powered vehicles. It’s not a big deal anymore because the manufacturers are very proactive in using winter blends mixed with kerosene, but it certainly used to be a significant issue. Then there’s the emissions. The prevailing opinion is that diesel fuel creates far more emissions than gasoline… America is obsessed with eliminating emissions to the point that some states are mandating all new vehicles sold are electric vehicles within the next 12 years or something like that. Of course the technology and infrastructure aren’t there to support that yet, but who knows what will happen in the meantime. The lack of popularity of diesel vehicles means that many stations don’t even sell diesel. I have a diesel truck. There’s five gas stations in my town, and only one sells diesel fuel… when traveling in my truck, I have to legitimately plan out fuel runs and leave a decent reserve of fuel because of the availability of diesel pumps. It’s not so bad where I live because I’m in a super rural area and there’s lots of agricultural uses for diesel, but when I lived in the DFW metroplex, it became quite challenging to find diesel in the city. Industry and transportation still uses a lot of diesel fuel where power is an important deciding factor, but it is becoming less common even there. I am a paramedic, and when I buy a new ambulance now, it’s getting hard to get them with diesel engines. The only way to get an ambulance with a diesel engine in the US is to get one on a truck chassis. A van cutaway chassis doesn’t come with diesel engines anymore. Then when you combine the lower popularity of diesel engines and the lack of availability, it becomes a supply and demand issue making diesel fuel more expensive than gasoline, sometimes significantly more expensive. Anyway, there’s a few reasons why passenger cars in the US don’t use diesel fuel.
View on Reddit #10720048

laddergoatperp@reddit

Thanks for the explanation! Very interesting because most of the reasons you're mentioning like emissions, are commonly used arguments in the EU/Sweden too. We have to use DEF and old diesel engines aren't allowed in cities. However, most cars are diesel powered, still! Im guessing now but I think all ambulances are Volvo diesel ones. IIRC the Volkswagen scam is what started this diesel era, because previously most cars were petrol ones, then we started using e85 and gas alot before the introduction of electrical vehicles. Now we're striving towards the latter but in the transport industry there still are alot of problems, like range. So gas and HVO(Bio-diesel/non fossil-diesel), are the go-to for "green" transportation.
View on Reddit #10737204

Whatnam8@reddit

In the USA, from my own personal experience, only 18 wheeler truck stops have DEF. If it is a normal “gas” station, not all of them have Diesel pumps and I’ve personally never seen one with a DEF pump attached. Most regular people will have to buy the jugs from an auto store and put it in themselves if they don’t have a truck stop near them (which most people don’t)
View on Reddit #10510709

Catfish-dfw@reddit

Buc-ee’s have DEF pumps along with regular diesel with DEF inside but they are the only auto place that I have seen them at. All other DEF pumps I have run across is on the Truck side of Love’s or Pilots.

It's the next best thing in travel centers, the one in Alabama caused such a stir, they had to widen the exits to 3 lanes, and it's an absolute nightmare on the weekends, over 200 pumps and it's not enough, but to be fair, people park at the pumps, go in, get food and use the restroom so it takes 20 to 30 minutes to clear a pump
View on Reddit #10533619

laddergoatperp@reddit

Interesting. I would've thought diesel fueled cars and trucks was equally popular in the states. Cause here, before the electric wave most cars were diesel ones. And they all use DEF wich meant every other pump has several hoses for that aswell.

The DEF, and probably to avoid the gas cars blocking the diesel pumps. Not pulling up is a douche move though. View on Reddit #10498160

Not really. I had to fill DEF pretty much every other tank when unloaded. That was woth a ram 2500. When you have 50-100+ trucks a day on the auto side getting diesel half or more are likely getting DEF as well if they are in any kind of newer truck. Pouring DEF from a jug at a gas station sucks. The trash cans don't fit the box without smashing them down. Doing that makes a smelly mess for every one. No one wants to tote empty boxes in the bed so then you stack them beside the can where they will get knocked around etc. Just put a DEF pu.p on the auto side.
View on Reddit #10506784

ValuableShoulder5059@reddit

The couple guys I know that haven't deleted their trucks need def about when they need oil changes. Still the consumption of def goes up significantly as you run the engine harder. Someone likes to floor it!
View on Reddit #10527492

ComprehensivePea1001@reddit

I am guilty of flooring it. Diesel torque is fun. I used to work pipeline si the majority of its time on the road it had about 14-18k of camper and my belongings behind it. When unloaded, I'd floor it around town and such. On the interstate, though, I'd baby it because I could get 30+ mpg out of it with no load.
View on Reddit #10530444

ValuableShoulder5059@reddit

From my experience with off road equipment staying at 100% power burns about 10-1 fuel to def. Of course those emissions are a lot less strict so less def is probably used at 100% power as when an ontoad vehicle does.
View on Reddit #10530801

ComprehensivePea1001@reddit

Because of stupid non diesel four wheelers, if stupid four wheelers put diesel in the tank. Then it’s on them at an auto pump. Though if they had def at the auto fuel island. Best believe they would absolutely somehow put it in their four wheeler. Even if it has the blue handle and is covered by the freeze flap.
View on Reddit #10491037

xj5635@reddit

Maybe. Seems like it would still be a "them" problem as long as its clearly marked def. After thinking about though i figure its probably more about the money. A diesel pickup or suv driver are probably much more willing to spend 16 to 20 dollars for a 2.5gal jug than truckers are, plus we usually have large enough tanks and keep an eye on it enough to say "nah ill just get it at the next stop vs buying jugs" where as a lot of truck and suv drivers probably don't think much of it till the def light is on and they have no choice but to buy what evers available at what ever premium the station wishes to charge.
View on Reddit #10491515

Inside_Ad_2920@reddit

Most diesel pickups don't even have a DEF gague and we have to wait until it tells us we're about to run out, which doesn't always leave much room for "the next stop". I also think they burn through it faster than a semi.

I have an extended tank (65 gallons) and auxiliary (60 gallons). So hitting the high speed pumps on the road is heaven. The auto pumps are an hour of my life at some places. But I also have a fleet card so it’s strictly pull up, prepay, pump and drive away for me.

I went from driving class A for 3 years to now being in a single axle class B tanker which of course my A covers. We only fuel at 1 chain of gas stations, they have a few truck stops but no where near downtown St. Louis where I primarily work. I will say fueling at gas stations is nice and convenient but it takes SO LONG. And I only have a 50 gallon tank. So I’m always happy when I get to fuel at a truck stop, but that being said I’m still in a commercial vehicle, not a pickup truck. Also if you ever see a dumbass straight truck tanker backward in a fuel island my DEF tank is on the GD passenger side. When I had that in a semi I’d make it work but with my maneuverability in a straight truck it’s so much easier to just get it in backward 😂

Relax. A pickup takes 2 minutes to fill and those people rarely take an hour leaving it sit blocking you from pulling through to go inside for God only knows what can take some drivers so long. I often take my pickup in to truckstops strictly because the DEF pump is there. It is also nicer to use truck high-flow pumps and be done so much faster than automotive diesel pumps. I do, however, try to specifically time my visit for when there's multiple empty islands. I will not wait behind trucks needing 150 gallons or more (plus risking the aforementioned island blockers) and akso don't want to anger the drivers like the OP who assume I'm just some random pickup a-hole that's never driven a big truck.

My truck holds 48 gallons of diesel. The small pumps take forever. I can fill my truck from empty to full in a matter of minutes at the big pumps. That’s why they put the large fill nozzles on those trucks. We all have a right to use them.

i drive a bucket and use the fuel islands, I see way more truckers turn their trucks off and leave their shit parked in the fuel islands to go inside more than I see 4-wheelers use them.

FYI it’s not a truck stop and they aren’t truck lanes. It’s a travel center and diesel fuel island. Stop acting like you own the rights to be the only type of vehicle using that side. I bet you cry when an RV parks in the truck parking area too. If y’all were less entitled and had thicker skin this industry wouldn’t be rotting away from the inside out
View on Reddit #10481696

Why do truckers stay in the lane that it says for trucks to move over. Because entitled a holes that’s why.

Maybe it was the only spot available when he rolled up? Who cares. Your life was probably largely unaffected by this, just wait the few minutes and then go about your day.

I’ll do this in my company’s F-350 or F-550 if I’m pulling a gooseneck. Otherwise, when unloaded I’ll go to the auto side

The station I use doesn't have separate diesel pumps. That said I still pump my 30 gallons and gtfo of the way even though there are 8 stations and nobody around.

Because i have a skip tank and 2 diesel tanks under my truck. Also i am a commercial vehicle buying fuel and are no different than you. Just because you're bigger doesn't mean you have more rights. Also DEF at the pump is more fresh than bottled that sits for months.

I do it all the time. I need def. Why spend and have the hassle of those fucking jugs? Also I have a fuel card that makes diesel way cheaper. So I can save 5 to 10 dollars fueling up or not make you so darn mad. Sorry not sorry.

I get that but alot of people are mad he is even there. I pull up if I'm in the pete and if I'm in the pickup I usually pull around to the front. But I would say 99% of the time it's tractor trailers blocking 3 deep with the pump open because people couldn't wait to get inside to get there taco bell.

There are 10 million places in this country where four wheelers can go and very few where semis can go. It's just obnoxious people come and take up our very limited space.
View on Reddit #10469629

endthefed2022@reddit

It’s an inconvenience at best, it takes him 3 minutes to fuel up. Secondly that’s a full size truck, that happens to have 4 wheels Which could have him subject to dot and fuel reporting , which would not be available to them a regular pump

[https://www.tsdlogistics.com/services/fuel-program/](https://www.tsdlogistics.com/services/fuel-program/) If enrolled with this card for diesel purchases, we must use the truck pumps. It is a huge per-gallon discount on diesel. It gives us the diesel discount that big carriers get.

On those pumps the fill ups probably take 4-5 mins at most, i’ll take this over some driver taking 15 to fuel and taking a shit and shower blocking for another half hour.

I use Open Roads for TSD Logistics on my RV pull vehicle. It is a fuel card that gives me the big carrier fuel discount (usually 30-60 cents off per gallon). The catch is I can only use the fuel pumps in the back. So, even if I am not pulling my RV with my F450 I have to use the truck pumps.
