King Schools Instrument is raising more questions than answers

When I used King schools for the private pilot portion I loved Johns explainations and super cheesy jokes that aren't ever funny. But man, did it work. I have retained so much. So I fgured that I would go ahead and purchase the instrument course. This was about a year ago. I purchased the program on sale and decided I would wait until I was ready to start my instrument training. Well, I'm about 110 hours in, and I'm ready to start my training, but going through the videos has been raising significantly more questions than answers. I feel like they are going too fast. And, nothing against Martha, but for some reason when John talks it sticks. Shes the main one teaching this time around. It's the same style just delivered differently i don't know... I can't do a refund, and I'm not looking to spend the money to buy a whole new course. I'd try sportys or something but its too expensive, I don't want to buy two instrument courses. Any thoughts? Is there a free, or cheap option to help me not just pass the test, but understand the material?

They have a seperate Cessna instrument rating course that I used during my instrument training. It was pretty good, and I was training in both 172s and Diamonds. My CFII said the Cessna integrated course was much better than the standard course.

I’d supplement the course with study from dauntless. It’s a pretty good study program

If it helps, I enjoyed Kings and found it useful for private. I never finished the course for IR... I supplemented with Sheppard Air and moved on. I got more out of instrument from working with my instructor, whereas the bulk of private knowledge came from self-study and Kings. So.. I don't think you're alone. Don't sweat it.

Yeah, I've used Kings for all of my ground because my 141 requires it and they're really not very good. It feels disjointed and unorganized, like someone cobbled together a bunch of clips from different DVD's and uploaded them. And that makes the corny ass jokes even more annoying. I've noticed especially on the commercial that there's quite a bit of missing info from the ACS as well. For my instrument I supplemented with Sheppard and that helped a lot on the written. Besides that a lot of YouTube and the ASA oral exam guides.

I’m doing my IR at the moment, and just watching the Sportys videos on the IFR course is not enough knowledge to pass a practical test. I’m reading the instrument handbook and procedures book and this is where everything is. I think the videos are good once you have read the manuals first.

Agree. I was disappointed at the lack of depth of the Sporty’s videos. I don’t feel like they prepared me AT ALL for the instrument written. They were much more basic than I thought they’d be.

This might be an unpopular opinion but I hate Kings. I just don’t like the format, the teaching style, and the grainy old school-y feeling of it. Go with Gold Seal or Flight Insight. Or Sportys.

I love FI’s free videos, but I can’t really recommend the paid product. A lot of it is half-assed. Videos cut off mid sentence constantly. Their questions often have absolutely nothing to do with the videos they follow.

Idk, Sheppard is just a test prep not a ground school.

What do you think kings ground school is designed to do? Get you ready for your written exam. Sheppard has explanations and it's just a lot of reading questions.

I mean, I guess if you use it like that. Ground school is to actually learn the material whereas test prep is for you to rote memorize for the written.

Agreed. Doesn’t feel right watching footage and graphics that was filmed in 2001. The app is also pretty bad - sync issues, text flows off the screen on my iPad, and the way it’s written is all around bad - they’re wrote quasi-sentences and broke it up into bullet points for no reason.

I didn't like the King's IR videos either. I went on YouTube and watched the FlightInsight IR videos. The explanations are far better than Kings.

I used King for my Instrument ground cause the 141 required it. It’s pretty terrible…or was.
