How has the mood in Hungary felt since the new government came into power?

I visited in 2023 with my ex girlfriend hosting me. I remember the mood being largely apolitical, but those who cared feeling apathetic about the system. I would walk the streets of Dunaharaszti, Budapest, Miskolctapolca, Eger, Siófok, Visegrád, etc. feeling strange seeing so many government posters all over the place.
I wonder, are Hungarians feeling a bit happier, if that’s possible? You guys have the best food in Europe, beautiful architecture, and now proof that democracy is alive. I just am glad to see you guys thriving and I’m wondering if you all agree :)

more hopeful about the future, but still sceptical, the new government will have to prove a lot, i wonder how their 1200+ promises will affect them in long term, the people are still hungry about change for the better
we are having great debates in the parlaiment, the public is now interested more in politics and they are more active, just to give an example, tens of thousands are watching the live broadcast if there is one active, which is a never seen number

A huge chunk of Orbán supporters finally realized that they and their kids wont be dragged off to fight in Ukrain, realizing that they have been lied to.
Another chunk of Orbán voters got "converted" cause the propaganda machine was shut off and finally they could hear and see what the TISZA party has to say instead of the fearmongering lied.
A small elite of Orbán voters are snarking, coping, seething and generally act as insufferable as they always were.
The rest? We are happy that the change happend. Watching what the new government is up to with great interest.

Suffice to say, during fidesz' reign of terror I became so jaded and hostile towards everything "national", especially the national symbols they had hijacked and misappropriated that I literally had to puke when looking at someone sporting a hungarian flag at a public event.
The day after the elections I felt such an urge to reclaim everything that had been taken from me and that I had been denied that I went to the closest bookstore and purchased the biggest, most beautiful book on hungarian history I could find.
Everyone in my bubble is noticeably happier, more relaxed, and is generally more optimistic and hopeful about country's future. It gives me immense satisfaction to see the soulless henchmen of the Orbán regime grovel, whine and cry in the media about "rule of law" and "democracy". It has never felt this amazing to be a native hungarian.

Still in the honeymoon phase.
Kobaljov@reddit
As Prime Minister Peter Magyar (you know PM is the new PM..) stated too
skp_005@reddit
His initials are actually MP.

The exgallery causing large scale irreversible damage to the country, still walk free, enjoy major events, and have the money they stole, so not that much to talk about until that is cleared up..

I lived in Germany for 5 years long, and moved back to Hungary 7 years ago. I wanted to leave again…since April 12th I don’t want to leave my country anymore. I can breathe again.

The grass is greener, the sky is blue-er. It takes time since we fight the PTSD caused by this 16 years, but we will get there.

The day after the election was like a fog has been lifted. The propaganda posters went away quite quickly, and as someone who's seen them all over since I was a teenager (now late twenties), it's surprising how quickly I got used to their absence.
I think to me now that there are very visible bases for comparison, it's even clearer how bad things really were. I already knew it was bad, but the new context revealed the true depths of how awful things truly were, and how close we were to catastrophy. I was nervous in the months leading up to the elcetions because I thought that if we don't get rid if Fidesz and Orbán now, they'll just dig themselves in even harder and make sure no future party or cabdidate could come this close to victory. Only a decisive constitutional majority could have fixed this, sonI'm glad that's what happened, but I hope they'll come through on their promise to make the election system fairer so that such huge majorities become rare rather than the norm.
Much-Journalist3128@reddit
We've yet to see if the new govt will make any actually favorable changes to the average hungarian. Until then, nobody can say anything. Actions speak louder than words

It feels like waking up in an alternate reality that we finally found a portal to. I still can't believe it that we made it here. Unbelievable, but in the most euphoric way:)

There is actual hope

Boy oh boy, I just can't fathom the hardness of my morning woods since the elections. I mean it was consistently titanium hard before, but now it is space-diamond hard.

Now THAT is a Hungarian way to describe a situation. Köszi

You're very welcome... needless to say, I can't remember the last time I had to use any kind of wake-up reminder or alarm... it is always RISE AND SHINE, BEHOLD MY POWER AND BEAUTY, OBEY, HOST BODY!
I take it as a sign of very good health. We have a perfect relationship. Do not worry for a second.
Jokes apart, in my bubble people are happier, more optimistic, but also in a realistc way, there is a shitpile inheritance from the last 16 years bigger than the epic one from jurassic park, so restoration will be challenging, but you can see people starting to work together and cooperate. In the near future I predict that people will come together even more and work together for the common good, not on asian society levels, but more than they did in the past. And a lot of issues can be solved locally in small communities, those add up and step by step hopefully it will transform towards something that will become mainstream and we'll head towards the west mentally, too.

Have you ever had a clogged, stuffed nose so nasty, that you almost burst an artery trying to blow out and no amount of nose spray or whatever could undo, and you were on the verge of hyperventilating while clawing at your face, and then once it suddenly just stopped as if God just snapped a finger, and suddenly every breath you took was a magical cool refreshing breeze and you felt inner peace the way you very rarely do?
That's how.
Fine-Independence976@reddit
We still feel the vibes.
Equivalent_Number424@reddit
On one hand elevated and hopeful, on the other hand the extreme anger at the previous government did not dissipate one bit, so it still smells like cold civil war.
Csoffadeek@reddit
Pretty fine. We are still in a sugar rush and we are extremely happy that it's an issue in the parlaiment if the prime minister is banned from commenting at certain MP's facebook site or not.
Blackmore1030@reddit
No change in the general mood, except for a few fanatics. And it seems the new government will be more authoritarian than the previous one.
the-cat-7000@reddit
Let's say we transitioned from major depression to the mild unhappiness Hungarians are famous for.
Hominidae_Bridge@reddit
I wonder, are Hungarians feeling a bit happier, if that’s possible?
brah, it's been a month. Give it some time,
Illesbogar@reddit
Most people I know have been extatic. I've been in a shock for weeks. If you give it time it will only dissipate and it's not long before dissappointment and regret sets in lol.
HerrMatthew@reddit
I mean even just after a month I've felt a massive shift in the public mood. Hopeful, if not happy. But I'd say that those around me, and I feel pretty good right now.
jamboamericano@reddit (OP)
Fair enough. What is the big thing you personally want to see by let’s say year’s end?
FokhagymasTejfolos@reddit
Fulfilling some of the core promises, such as reforming the electoral system and going after the big oligarchs, not just some expendable small fish.
Khal-Frodo-@reddit
It is carnival every day. Literally, people are so overjoyed and full of hope!
cgo25@reddit
Fidesz supporters are very mad. But you won't find many of them on Reddit, because most of them are old people and impoverished people with zero English fluency. I'd say that I feel a lot better and more hopeful about our future. I occasionally hear upset fidesz supporters rambling, but it's very peaceful in general.
yeahboii5@reddit
Yes. A lot of people are happier. The first 3-4 weeks were so unbelievable, as if an unmovable object finally had been not only moved but shattered into pieces. I'm happier. I can finally focus on my work, I'm more effective. I'm finally in the mood to be active. So good
kretenallat@reddit
for me it was the opposite, couldnt focus on work, gorging on news about Hungary for weeks.
bb250517@reddit
It's a huge breath of fresh air, you don't need to worry about the parliment just making a new law overnight, dictating that everybody who doesn't own 3 yachts will be molested by an ork.
MrCookieHUN@reddit
A song came out recently, called Dasvidanya, and it captures it perfectly(it's only in hungarian sadly)
But essentially, we're both unsure what comes next, but are fuckin ecstatic that Fidesz is gone, and the air itself is easier. The chocking anxiety that all those government/fidesz posters is gone.
Wise_Fox_4291@reddit
Those fugly posters are gone. A lot of people were really relieved and happy following the election and the formation of the new government. I think people in general seem a little calmer, lighter, a little more upbeat.
ElvenEnchilada@reddit
I'd say we are somewhat happier. The Avarage Joe/Jane feels some power now that the system that was believed to be unbreakable was eventually broken. The new government has some issues that they grow out of - hopefully - but in general we are a bit more optimistic. The people who got a bigger mood boost are the ones who wanted the blood of the previous government (not literally) and the new PM is not shy to kick Viktor and his mates where it hurts the most. As for me, I am glad they seem to uphold their promises, but ask this question again in a year or two.
horsewithnonamehu@reddit
The night of the election was absolute magic - strangers singing together and hugging each other, all the cars honking, fireworks. Since then it seems like the new government has neen doing exactly what they promised, so it's looking promising so far. I think people feel a bit more optimistic about the future, we're no longer ashamed of being Hungarian, also many of my friends that moved abroad mentioned they are considering finally moving home.
jetilovag@reddit
It is hopeful. A lot of people who were apolitical are now interested in politics. It is gonna take some time however for the propaganda to clear up and some people to realize that they have been brainwashed for a decade.
The rest of us feel grwat though!
Guillermo1810@reddit
I feel great. I hated the last government for so long. Seeing our currency get shittier and shittier each year, meanwhile countries that used to me in a similar economical situation as us are getting more and moré ahead.
Erasmus being taken away. The hateful shit the state tv and radio could spill out without any consequences. Being the only one to reject symbolic or important proposals that 20+ other countries agree with diplomatically.
Fidesz defeated this big time felt like such a relief. My spouse is not Hungarian and this is the first time in years I genuinely believe we can plan longer here.
Witch-for-hire@reddit
Well, I laugh a lot more.
I would not say that I am happy all the time, but I am more patient, more energized and most of all I feel more optimistic about the future.
balintmemphis@reddit
hell yeah we are happy. well at least the better part of the country is relieved, cant talk in the name of russophile old fuckers
