I asked my algebra teacher if I would ever use it when I grew up.

He said that I wouldn’t, but one of the smart kids might.
heygiraffe@reddit
In all seriousness, that's pretty much the right answer.
You could. Some people will. But you won't.
I don't think anyone that asks that question will ever use it. They couldn't, but they won't.
eserikto@reddit
Most people will use algebra fairly regularly. If you split a bill 6 ways by dividing the total by 6, you know it works because of elementary algebra. It's just arithmetic with variables and a lot of it has become second nature to you.
GotchUrarse@reddit
I have a math minor and semi-retired software engineer with nearly 30 years experience. I think I used actual Algebra 1/2 dozen times. However the critical think skills it helps with are used daily.
Kat121@reddit
I got to use the law of cosines in a real world application exactly once in my career.
piper63-c137@reddit
½ dozen = x/12.
hold my beer, i got this one!
1/2x = 12 dozen.
1/2x =144.
x = 144 / ½ x = 288

You should have carried the beer, not drunk it.

My math teacher told us, "You'll use it to help your kids with their math homework."

Anyone who pays taxes or buys a car or a house or anything requiring installment payments (i.e. credit), would benefit from using algebra.
haakonhawk@reddit
Well, I did ask that question expecting it to be useless.
…a few years later I got into programming.
RecalcitrantHuman@reddit
Hey. For some of us, it is the only bra we will ever get into
short_bus_genius@reddit
I actually do use algebra at work.
…. And didn’t get laid in high school.
harvey6-35@reddit
I actually do use it (in chemistry)
wordet9@reddit
This is absolutely true

extremely slow clap. I'll reluctantly award it.

My dad was a career math teacher. He said this to his kids all the time.
Lmysic@reddit
Only the squares use it

I feel personally attacked right now

About ten years after graduation, I told I still hadn't used it. She said, "You probably never will, but it paid off my house."
KaiserDogue@reddit
LOL. I use it everyday and I'm not that smart.
TheDevilsAdvokaat@reddit
He said no, but I might use my algebra.

As a software developer, used Algebra heavily in business applications, analytics, calculating golf handicaps.

If you’ve ever been asked or wondered “Can I buy three shirts at $3 each with a $10 bill, THST IS ALEBRA.!“
FourteenthCylon@reddit
I was a smart kid, and I use algebra all the time.
Being smart has it's drawbacks, though. I asked my sex ed teacher if I would ever use what I was learning in his class. He said I wouldn't, but most of the dumb kids would.
madcowbcs@reddit
Only people who make real money use it.
VigorousRapscallion@reddit
Shamelessly stolen from Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal.
lightranger@reddit
It’s not the actual math that you use every day. The math does something much more useful by developing your logical and critical thinking skills.
ajkimmins@reddit
I think the biggest math using profession... Is actually the trades. Mostly construction. Most of them just don't realize what they use. Making sure a corner is square, they generally call it 3-4-5 instead of Pythagorean. They have to use this when estimating shingles for roofs. They mostly use geometry but I figure close enough.😁 Square footage.
spiritsarise@reddit
Square footage? Because of the steel in the toe area?
ajkimmins@reddit
Flooring, roofing, walls. Concrete guys gotta get volume... Most probably use computers now, but still a good idea to be able to do by hand.
Stach302RiverC@reddit
I never took an Algebra class in school, I'm past middle age and living a decent life...good enough is good enough for me.
Roro_Yurboat@reddit
My nephew was studying and asked me if I ever use imaginary numbers. I said only during tax time.
Quarantined_foodie@reddit
Did you work for Enron? Or Arthur Andersen? They were awarded the 2002 Ig Nobel prize in economics "for adapting the mathematical concept of imaginary numbers for use in the business world"..
iloveFjords@reddit
The i is implied whenever needed.

Many skills taught in school are about problem solving ability and critical thinking. Public schools are not vocational schools.

My algebra teacher told me pie are squared. I smacked him upside the head and told him that pie are round, cornbread are square.
He was such a dumbass.
