A man sees a men’s store with a suit on sale…

It should be expensive. Hart Shaffer and Marks, but it’s only $100!
So he goes in and asks if he can get one in a size 44. The salesperson says, “well we don’t actually have and in stock. The owner puts that in the window to get people like you to come in. Can I show you something else?”
The man goes on his way, and a block down, sees the same suit in a different store window. Price is $1800. But he gets an idea.
He enters the store and asks, “do you price match?”
“Yes, I own this store and I will not just match, but beat any competitor pricing.”
“Well your competition has that same suit priced at $100! So what would be your price for a size 44?”
“If I was out of stock, like my friend up the street, it would be $50.”

That’s a pretty good joke, and while I don’t insist on accuracy or logical reality for every joke, if you don’t mind a polite suggestion, to prevent a tiny inaccuracy that might put other people off, you should know it’s Hart Schaffner Marx. I could be a dick about it, but that wouldn’t suit me.

on the left or right?
Mikesaidit36@reddit
???
JamieTheGinger@reddit
@when getting a suite tailored... "do you dress to the left or right?" is a polite way of asking a person with a dick which side they arrange it or it naturally rests.
since the joke was about suits and since Mikesaidit said "that wouldn't suit me"... i was joking that someone might be uncomfortable because their ... well i guess it's open to interpretation if the joke is about bad tailoring or suggesting the person has a large unit.
Mikesaidit36@reddit
Got it, thanks. I had a hunch, but honestly, what is a tailor really gonna do differently to tailor your pants left/right-wise? Can’t imagine it makes a difference. I’ve had a few suits tailored and wasn’t asked.
JamieTheGinger@reddit
Yeah i don't know. Allow a little extra fabric in that leg I assume. Probably doesn't matter much unless the fashion is tight, the material non-stretch and the member in question larger than average while at rest.

I see what you did there
Mikesaidit36@reddit
I don’t.

I recognize that this is a joke, but most (all?) US states have consumer protection laws that specifically prohibit advertising goods or prices that are not actually for sale, and I understand that the EU and other countries have similar laws.
So I’d probably file a DTPA suit against the first store for $1700 in damages, trebled.
Elaikases@reddit
At least in Texas where there is a private cause of action under the DTPA. Some states lack that. ☹️☹️
big_sugi@reddit
I think they all do at this point. There’s a 50-state survey on DTPA laws that identifies a statute providing a private right of action in every state. I haven’t checked to see how robust they are, though, or how accurate the cites might be.
Elaikases@reddit
Neat. Things have improved though most states still lack tripled damages, many have minimum recovery amounts (so if your actual damages are low you get the minimum instead).
I retired in 2019 and practiced in Texas which has a very robust DTPA. I encountered other states that did not.
Dave92F1@reddit
How much "damage" have I suffered by not being able to buy an $1800 suit for $100?
big_sugi@reddit
Yep, Texas was a leader in the field; I took a DTPA class taught by an adjunct UT law almost 25 years ago, and I’ve had a couple of occasions to use the background knowledge in other jurisdictions in both professional and personal contexts.

"rain check"?
armpitketchupandbutt@reddit
Not to be "that guy," but HSM quality took a real dive after the 2009 and 2012 bankruptcies.
DangerousBotany@reddit
There's an old HSM plant in my home town. I remember my grandmother telling stories about the women who worked there. It was well known in town that they made Johnny Carson's suit pants back in the day.

It’s an old joke… really old

A customer complained about prices once when their regular supplier was out of stock. FIL replied, “When I am out of stock, my prices are lower, too”
Elect5643@reddit
that’s such a perfect business logic vs reality moment 😂

This actually happened to me when I was selling cameras.

What line?
Arcane_Pozhar@reddit
Does anyone else feel like the punch line really needs an adjustment to make it land right?
Like I get that he's making fun of the potential customer, and his competitor... But the delivery of it all just doesn't seem to land.
DupeyTA@reddit
Buy the $1800 one.
Return it to the $100 store.
Go tell the $1800 store again with proof the $100 store has it in stock. Buy it at the $1800 one for $50. Go to the $100 store and buy it for $100. Return the original $1800 one.
big_sugi@reddit
(1) how are you returning the $1800 suit to a store from which you didn’t buy it?
(2) what proof are you going to offer the $1800 store, when they can call up the $100 store and say “hey, are you guys selling HSM suits for $100? No? Kthxbye.”
(3) why do you imagine the $100 store is going to sell it back to you for $100.
Your plan would result in the $1800 store making a sale, the other store getting an $1800 suit for $100, and you being out $1700. Great plan!
DupeyTA@reddit
(It's not real. Turns out, we're on a joke sub.)

Yeah, so maybe tell better jokes?
