What is life like in the areas near the border with Slovenia?

Hello dear neighbours. I am from Slovenia, and I would like to know what life is like in the neighbouring part of Hungary. I would also like to know how people from that part of Hungary see Slovenia and what the relationship is like between the Slovenian and Hungarian regions?

Nálatok legalább mindenhol a Tisza nyert.

If you live in the blue striped parts of Hungary, and you are not part of the top 25% life can be bad depending on comparison. I will compair to western europe. Nearly all cities or villages lose population because there is no jobs, or big enough wages to pay for living without calculating to the last penny you have. They either move to the non-striped area or to some other country. Infrastructure is bad everywhere, increasingly so in the striped zone and near the border. The more you go east or south the worse it is. Schools and hospitals are worse and worse. With the new government, changes may be coming but that will take atleast 3-5 years to be noticable.
The relationship in the parts you asked about is chill. Most of today's motherland hungarians doesn't have beefs with others around us. The jokes however stick around, but those are just jokes. Descendant of hungarians who were cut off and left in other countries by Trianon are different, but even in this case lot of them acknowledge that they got f-ed and accept they live in the country they live in. Apart from székelys but that's a whole other can of worms. We usually feel bad for them and want the government to help them (usually there are some minority rights problems). This however makes other countries governments look negatively toward us. Especially Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania. So no problem on the Slovenian side as far as I know. Although I know nothing about Slovenia in general. Apart from the femboy stereotypes.

I'm rather poor and live in the striped area. Quality of life is not equal to GDP per capita.
I'm writing this only to add a different perspective, because there's a huge and often undervalued cost of living in so-called developed areas, which can be just as much of a disadvantage as poorer infrastructure elsewhere. (I'm talking about western Hungary, since that's what I know.)
Especially since, many times, even if better services are available, they are no longer affordable or accessible even for the lower middle class.

OMG terrible
Everyone I know from here is an addict, or self-destructive, or suicid in some way. It’s widely called “dark Zala”, as even the electric network had been introduced last at this part of the country. Escaape!

Do you like asbestos? :D that's some new news... Not much there but at least not as arid as eastern Hungary

not circled: szombathely
KoVaNekk@reddit
Check other locations like Zalaegerszeg and Őriszentpéter etc for asbestos!
EmphasisPlus2679@reddit
Nice asbestos is very good. You can find around fishing lakes and houses
LELUET@reddit
I'm from one of those two places. I don't know what you expect but when I cross into Slovenia it still kinda feels like Hungary to me
toriimo94@reddit
Dude. Literally when you cross the border, the roads are in much better quality and the houses and their surroundings are cleaner and tidier
gergely9706@reddit
I'm not from that part of the country but I can honestly say I envy Slovenia as a country. One never hears from you guys, you keep to yourself while Hungary was in the focus for you now why for the last couple of years and look where it got us... You keep to yourself, don't take part in the "Whose got bigger national pride and lowest income" race of the ex-Yugo nations and you have breathtaking natural scenery. But it's just my subjective opinion.
But talking about that part of Hungary; the Őrség part is considered to be one of the most beautiful parts of the country and rightly so. I'm not sure if you are interestes in that part, it's close to Lendava.
Technical-Art-6101@reddit
I'm from this region, and I think liffe here is peaceful and simple. There’s also much more of a personal connection between people than in the interior of Hungary. When it comes to work, however, it’s difficult; many people commute to Austria, including us.
Slovenia and the Slovenian people are very dear to me. The difference really stood out, especially when compared to Austria! I think we’re quite similar in terms of national character.
By the way, we always choose the Slovenian coast; we really love that region. And Ljubljana is my favorit capital city!
However I don't really know much slovenians, only a folk music group ön Hungary that still keep the folk music traditions of their slovenian origins. Slovenian minority here is called the "Vends" if I know correctly :)

I was in Nagykanizsa once when we had to do border reiforcement work as hungarian police. The prostitues were beautiful back then that's all I have to say

Why
OverdosedSauerkraut@reddit
Very laid back part of the country. The infrastructure is absolute dogshit, and the shitty roads drove away even the remaining industry.
DoctorSure8024@reddit
Life is dead boring there and the only option is to travel to Slovenia or Austria.
No-Interaction-2724@reddit
There is a minority called "vends" who speak a mixture of Slovenian and Hungarian, but they are just a couple thousand people. There aren't too much interconnection between the two countries, don't expect huge border crossings, in most cases it's forest roads and hills. A pretty chill atmosphere on both sides btw. Zala county is a bit underdeveloped compared to the country, Vas is a bit better, but expect countryside life in general.
StunningComment6064@reddit (OP)
So it’s the poorest part of Hungary? I thought are around Ukraine is the most underdeveloped but obviously I was wrong
Appropriate_Box1380@reddit
Definetly not the poorest, although it isn't one of the richer region either. But the area is mostly rural and consists of tiny villages.
No-Interaction-2724@reddit
You're right. The poorest are the NE counties. This part is only poor compared to EU, not to Hungary
Lillyke@reddit
Apparently filled with asbestos thanks to Austria <3

I grew up in Nagykanizsa, so I can mainly speak about this city and its surroundings. Unfortunately, I no longer live here, but I visit home quite often.
What you should know about the city and nearby places (for example Letenye, the small town near the Croatian border) is that in the 1990s life here was thriving, mainly because of Croatian visitors who came here to shop. When I was a child, we were even taught some Croatian in kindergarten and school. The city had a huge nightlife and several factories that provided many jobs (a brewery, machine factories, a light bulb factory, etc.).
Today, almost nothing of that remains. It has become a dead town surrounded by ghost villages, with basically zero job opportunities and a noticeable lack of people between the ages of 20 and 40. It is sad to see, because I still feel emotionally attached to the place. But if a friend visited me here, honestly I would not really know what to show them or what kind of program to organize in the city — it is simply that boring.
The surrounding nature is beautiful though, and there are some great hiking spots, but that is pretty much it. Geographically, the city is actually in a very favorable location, since a motorway connects it directly to Budapest, and both Lake Balaton and the Croatian coast are relatively close.
For me personally, there is also a charming romantic atmosphere to the villages near the Croatian border, where you can still sometimes see Croatian names, and the overall feeling is almost like traveling back to the 1990s.
wdym4227@reddit
Dead.
narancsosbukta@reddit
It's a dead region, a lot of people habe moved to richer parts of the country (Budapest, nearer the Austrian border) or abroad. I am originally from Kaposvár, that's also the same. There is Balaton, and there are some small spa towns with thermal spa which are nice (Hévíz, Zalakaros), but that's all.
No-Interaction-2724@reddit
Southern Zala may be dead, but I disagree with the rest. Őriszentpéter is pretty popular amongst the rich, they even have a Michellin star restaurant. Zalaegerszeg, Szombathely are absolutely livable
LaurestineHUN@reddit
Everybody works in Austria, or the tourism industry. Lots of Western immigrants move there, bc they are rich and can bridge shitty infrastructure with money. Nature is gorgeous.
Slovenes are cool, I hope our relationship can improve with our szomszéd.
Practical-Film-1645@reddit
hopefully that region can be the focal point of Slovenian-Hungarian femboy trade in the future
Dry-Cranberry-3253@reddit
I want to move here in the near future (őrség if i find something there)!
