Which city to visit for the best food?

I just realized that there are apparently like 300 cities or towns in Hungary. I’m looking to go to a place with good and cheap local food with in addition to amazing scenery like vast grasslands and mountains.
I’m not looking to go to the main city hubs like Debrecen or Szeged or pecs those are too ‘bustling’

Anyukam mondta? It is not cheap. Hungarian traditional food has really a home made atmosphere that you either get at a local house or a restaurant which emulates it. I can tell you one in Eger my local town.

Balatonfüred area, but it won't be cheap

Why are Hungarians always pissed at everything 😂

We don't like it when people waste our time and energy out of laziness by asking questions that can be answered with a quick internet search.

Yes, peak season is summer ofc. As someone said before, avg rural restaurant = stew, fried cheese and meat, goulash / fishermans soup, Thats's it, nothing gourmand.

Eger, Szilvásvárad if you want gastronomy and history & nature

Bro you're asking the impossible...
In Hungary rural areas mean poor areas . You won't find good food let alone anything good those places as there is no market for it. Take this from a local

Damn nvm then my bad

Visit Eger, it is famous for wine, there are so many good restaurants, near Dobó square you can choose all of them they are correct. You can visit the castle and the thermal bath.
Szilvásvárad is also close with a beautiful waterfall and good restaurants with delicious game dishes and freshly grilled trout that are raised locally there. The Lake Tisza is also close to Eger, with good restaurants. You can try typical Hungarian fish dishes made with fish caught from the Tisza, such as catfish and carp, prepared in a variety of fantastic ways:)

Szilvásvárad is pretty popular both with local and foreign people. There is a pretty nice hike trail with a joyride locomitve, and there several restaurants which make pretty good Hungarian food like goulash and such. Just be ready to pay up, most of the places have pretty steep prices no matter what industry.

So the smaller the town the more expensive? I thought food prices would be relatively lower in smaller towns to cater to locals
Bear_the_serker@reddit
Most local people in rural areas don't eat out that often both for cultural and economic reasons.
Most areas outside Budapest has absolute dogshit salaries so the food is either cheap and not that great, or they build on tourism in which case they usually do provide great service but are pretty damn expensive for the average Hungarian. Besides that, in more rural areas eating in a restaurant is almost like something special reserved for special occasions. Rural communities are usually saturated with older people who either can't afford to eat out or are stuck 40-60 years in the past, when during communism this was something posh and fancy to do.

Interesting, thank you for the explanation

I moved from a smaller city to Budapest, and while high-end, pricey restaurants are plenty in Budapest, but if you go to an average restaurant (I mean great restaurant, just not a special/Michelin star one) that’s usually cheaper. There are way more restaurants here which results in more competition, so prices can actually be lower. And obviously there’s waay more to choose from in a city of 2 million then a smaller city with <100k of pepper
