It is common knowledge that the Titanic was headed for New York ...

... but what many people don't know is that, after its planned arrival in New York on April 17, 1912, the ships itinerary had it turning south to Mexico. The ship was to make port in Veracruz on May 5, 1912.
The Hellmann's company had recently opened its doors, and the hold of the Titanic was filled with jars of mayonnaise - the first ever to be shipped to Mexico. So it was with sadness that the people of Mexico learned that their eagerly awaited mayonnaise was on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
The great ship's intended arrival date is still marked in some parts of Mexico, in a remembrance known as Sinko de Mayo.

This is something that I took for fact as a child. I made a presentation on the titanic and said this with full belief that it was true.

It was sad.

Is someone gonna tell OP the ship never made it to NYC so the mayo was never loaded onboard?

I have to award an upvote for that gem.

This one shows up every year, like clockwork.

And every year, as mexican, my twitter feed and other social networks fill with memes telling "5 de mayo is neither our Independence Day or a big festivity".
