What Hungary needs to standout in Europe?
Posted by batukaming@reddit | askhungary | View on Reddit | 211 comments
Maybe you guessed, I'm a foreigner here after the elections. For me and most people Hungary isn't very known country in Europe and recently it got made into global news.
I was wondering if Hungary has any major company or industry known for? What do you need to do to become major economic hub? For example Poland was pretty isolated but became huge after CD projekt games and GDP growth.

LogMeIn (GoTo az új neve)
katatondzsentri@reddit
Az új név jól mutatja, mennyire a régi magyar logmein a cég és mennyire az a cég, amivel merge-elt olyan 8-9 éve (amit Goto-nak hívtak...)
Mitteccik@reddit
Szóval a GoTo teljesen elnyomta? Kár érte, nekem a LogMeIn név egy jól bejáratott márkának tűnt, de 10+ éve eljöttem Magyarországról és azóta nem követem az ottani informatikában a fejleményeket.
katatondzsentri@reddit
Nem teljesen, de azért nagyon elgoto-sodott. Amúgy nekem tetszett sokáig ebben a fázisban is. De gondolj bele: a logmein-nél voltak, ha emlékeim nem csalnak <1000-en, a goto-nál 2000-en amikor a merger volt - egyszerű "tömegvonzás" alapján melyik irányban mentek inkább a fokyamatok

What they have in common is not the point. There is a scale due to preferred degree of seasoning between different cultures. Hungarian food would have stronger taste than Dutch or German local cuisine, but the Dutch aren't stupid to go for Hungarian food as a substitute, since there's Singaporean, Indian, Pakistani, Yemeni, Indonesian and Malaysian as the alternative.

Bolognese sauce with ground paprika powder.
The exact same meal stops being "Hungarian" and instantly transubstantiates into "Mexican" if you put any sweetcorn in it.
Long-Island-Iced-Tea@reddit
This is going to get me quartered, but my mind was really not blown away by ragù in Bologna.
For a sauce that contains a list of ingredients that would barely fit on a sheet of A/5, ranging from chicken livers through pancetta and red wine to a whole cornucopia of spices and aromatics, it was surprisingly one-dimensional and barely different from what I make at home - from half the line items on that ingredient list (emphasis on the last part). A bit more hearty, but nowhere near "this is worth relocating over" hearty.
That is not a diss on the otherwise amazing culinary experiences one can have in Emilia-Romagna, and of course it does not exonerate anyone from using paprika powder in ragù, but tbf it also doesn't strike me as a fallacious addition that would amount to kitchen-heresy.
I would draw the line at something like caraway or dill.

Hungary has a wealth of potential, and many world-renowned innovations are linked to the country in some way—such as the hydrogen bomb, the ballpoint pen, the Rubik’s Cube, the foundations of modern computing, the matchstick, the dynamo, and even the video game War Thunder. I believe that investing more into research and development would be worthwhile.

vahokif@reddit

ScalierLotus11@reddit
We need manufacturing yes, but we should build our own things, slaving away for foreign multis gives us only a small portion of the growth large companies wpuld get us
vahokif@reddit
I mean China did pretty well doing exactly that...
ScalierLotus11@reddit
Yeah but China is infinitely larger than Hungary, and when it comes to expenses and planning they are more centralized meaning that ppl will have to work in a factory wether they like it or not. Hungary is just simply not capable of producing things on that scale. We dont have oil, cant make steel as we dont have enough iron ore (also the only steel factory is in Ukrainian hands), we only have 9 million people and a huge fraction of that are children and eldery, not to mention ppl with disabilities.
The only true strenght of Hungary is in the agriculture as we could easily be the #2 food provider in the EU (tho we have to do something with the desertification of Alföld)
ThatHeckinFox@reddit
I don't think the effort needed to make Hungary in to the agricultural powerhouse we could be, is compatible with the national spirit.
In general, a hungarian's priority in life is not for them to have it better, but for everyone else to have it as shitty as they do. Than there is the fact that our culture is insanely cynical, and weasely. For example, here on the Alföld, back when rain was s till a thing outside of winter, many farmers couldn't be fucked to manage... Whatever belvíz is in english. They just picked up the govt aid for belvíz damages, and left a lot of land barren.
The Hungarian national spirit was never exactly beneficial, and it only got worse and worse in the past 500 years. But even back then, just look at what happened after Mohács. Our nobility basically ended our country's relevance forever.
And while yes, we do have a lot of inventors, it's telling how most of them created their stuff abroad.

Pilóta keksz is far, FAR superior to Oreos, but that's it.
Icy-Square610@reddit
What are you talking about? Half of Hollywood is Hungarian .
Wise_Fox_4291@reddit
You are right that Hungary could and should punch above its weight, however there are a few things it is already notable for that's worth "spreading around".
Language: Hungarian is a unique and ancient language completely unrelated to almost every other European language. It doesn't belong to the Indo-European language family. It's a member of Uralic, distantly related to Finnish and Estonian and a bunch of very small languages in Eastern Europe and Western Siberia.
Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe and lake Hévíz not far from Balaton is the largest swimmable thermal lake in the world. Hungary is full of geothermal springs and every town worth a damn has a bath house making use of it. Budapest is home to hundreds of thermal springs and dozens of bath houses. There are enormous cave systems underneath Budapest, many of them filled with water. Exploration of these caves is still going on.
In terms of sports, Hungary is known for its horsemanship, horse archery and we are in the top tier in handball and waterpolo. Generally in water related sports Hungary does really well in the Olympics and overall, especially compared to its size, Hungary does exceptionally well at the olympics.
Our food is spicy and hearty. You might have heard about goulash, chimney cakes, lángos, chicken paprikás. Hungarian sausages are excellent and some of the best in the entire world if we are being honest. The number one spice is smoked paprika powder, which comes in both sweet and hot variety. Hungary is also home to the world's first officially recognised wine region, Tokaj, which is famous for its sweet dessert wines, the wine of choice of European royalty. Louis XVI of France said "it's the king of wines and the wine of kings". Another famous wine region is Villány, known for its red wines. Hungary is a small producer so it cannot compete on the international market in terms of quantity but Hungarian wines win international awards and prizes every year.
Hungarian inventions include the dynamo, vitamin C, the ballpoint pen, holograms, the BASIC programming language, Rubik's cube, and Hungarian scientists were instrumental in developing nuclear fission and even the fusion bomb. Look up "the Martians" a group of Hungarian mathematicians and physicists from the last century. Hungary also has a good number of Nobel prize laurates, we gained 3 more recently.
Hungary also came up with one of history's most successful military unit, the hussar. And if you have seen pictures of 19th century military men or royals wearing elaborate uniforms with those swirly patterns, that's actually a traditional Hungarian motif that was originally used by Hungarian hussars that then became used in Western militaries across the globe as well.

You can torrent in Hungary, without being charged. The public and the media is not leftist and does not have self-censorship, it is heavily right-wing - though still one-sided, better than the German press and media. No russophobia.
No overregulation, you are free to wash and repair your car at home. You are not forced to be extremely nice with others: if someone is an a***ole with you, you can just say them, f*** off, in Germany you get fined for both.
Taxes are somewhat lower, can invest tax-free.
No illegal immigrants - that was some of the things that Orbán did good.
No gig-economy - you can still buy yourself a flat, and can work for longer at a company, no need to be external - but unfortunately, it is also coming slowly here.
University education is completely free, medical universities are full of with Germans who were 'not good enough' for their education system.
The country is not overpopulated, like the other ones in the West. Maybe we are not the most industrially advanced from the former Eastern Bloc countries - like the Czech Republic -, we don't (yet) have a surging economy - like that of Poland's - but we are in still better situation than e.g. Romania.
Some of the things Orbán did good was the national rights in the EU, not trusting them blindly - Péter Magyar also defines himself as 'cautious eurooptimistic', at least not sceptic as Orbán. But we have our own way of life and that is good and things will just be better and better with time.
Hungary is a beautiful country with beautiful people, I would say it is a hidden jewel in Central-Eastern Europe. In Europe, they only talk about its flaws, and it is by no means perfect, but if you lived there and lived here, you can easily see the difference - and you will always want to come back. ;)

I think we as Hungarians are more well known for inventions that are successful but were never patented in order to make a major company out of it. See the ballpoint pen or Rubik's cube for example. As for why this is the case, I can't really tell.
Aranka_Szeretlek@reddit
How would you even build a company in Hungary? Daily trade volume at BUX is 45 MUSD, compared to FWBs 2.4 TUSD its not even rounding error - and Germany also suffers from a lack of liquidity. The country is not attractice to foreign talent. Budapest is nice, but hard to integrate, and living there is becoming more expensive than many Western cities. And home-grown talent? There is some, but universities in Hungary are lower-middle tier in EU, and the best students just leave to study somewhere lucrative. So without a talent pool, an international appeal, and liquidity, how would one build successful companies in Hungary? The market is help up by German manufacturing and EU-funded construction projects...
Skalthern@reddit
The Hungarian economy is mainly based on outsourcing and the export of goods. Consequently, we lack intellectual property, which has prevented the growth of large domestic companies. While some might mention Richter, Hell, OTP, or MOL, these are mid-sized at best by international standards.
To stand out, we need to modernize our perspective, both on a personal and an economic level. For example, while the gaming industry has grown worldwide, it has lacked government support over the past 20 years. Our biggest developer is Neocore Games, which is a AA studio at best, with around 80-100 employees. But believe me, we have serious talent in all fields.

_Nightfox_1@reddit
Hungarian here, while politically I think those are more than achievable with Magyar, it will be much harder to get rid of this reputation on a societal level.
Our society is extremely conservative, and it is much deeper than people would realize. Stuff like racism and homophobia very much are normalized in our society, and just hatred in general, all thanks to the Orban regime. Even people who are more closely aligned with the left in this country, are way more conservative leaning than the average western european, the gap is insane. Basically on a societal level we sort of are stuck in the 90s, because of the Orban regime's pushback against ideals that some would count as "progressive".
I definitely think that the damage has been done, and it will be decades until our society can deconstruct all the damage. So I personally think on a societal level, we will be called "that one racist/homophobic country" for a good decade or so. Atleast thanks to Magyar, hopefully we can ditch the fascist remark very soon.
Leather-Substance-39@reddit
I hate to break it to you but Hungary hasn't been fascist for a long time.
If you mean the current government that got booted those are opportunist, corrupt scumbags. Not even fascists, fascists have a backbone, some sort of principles, a system that orgnaizes the society. The current government only organized the wholesale theft of assets, national wealth.
And another thing: the newly elected Peter Magyar is not into mass immigration either. At best he is a much less corrupt, more presentable populist than his predecessor. Hungarian voters kicked Fidesz out of power because of the immense corruption, cronyism, theft. Not because the average Hungarian loves immigrants and wants open borders or particularly feels for Ukraine. Apart from a few Putin-fan edge lords nobody likes Russia in Hungary. But also nobody cares about Ukraine. I doubt the new government will cozy up to Zelensky. They will be on better terms but there won't be a bromance between Magyar and Zelensky.

Wow, thank you for telling me, it's so good to finally learn about the politics of my own country! /s
What I meant was, I saw too many posts and heard too many comments from foreigners, where if I told them where I'm from, they said we were fascists. Since the post's title is "what hungary needs to STAND OUT" and in my experience that is how we stood out in the past for people, that's the angle I took.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Langos. Literally my favourite thing in the whole country. Also can't believe it hasn't exported to other countries

Hungary has some companies that are leaders in their fields: MOL Group (oil and gas) is big in Central and southern Europe, and so is OTP Bank.
BioTechUSA (supplements) is a major European player, even partnering with FC Barcelona.
Hell Energy (energy drinks) also has a strong presence across Central and Eastern Europe and in developing markets, you can find their products from Morocco to India almost anywhere.
Gedeon Richter (pharmaceuticals) is more of a niche player, specializing in areas like women’s health and CNS (brain-related conditions). I had to buy a morning after pill once in Africa and guess what brand it was? Richter Gedeon.
Plus there is Rubic's cube that can be recognized anywhere, also a product of Hungary. And paprika, the spice.

Also, we had Ganz, Ikarus, and 5–6 large factories and companies that produced very high-quality products (trams, buses, mechanical equipment). Not to mention the vast agricultural lands from which we produced goods for export.
Over the past 50 years, these have been destroyed / stolen, something that would deserve the harshest punishment.

But thats in the past, I undestood the question as of current things.

Geothermal energy to power the rest of Europe.
The Pannonian basin contains insane amounts of relatively easily accessible energy. This fits right into the oil companies' expertise and capabilities.
Not to mention the 1000s of thermal springs and baths strewn across the country.

In the past we have produced a lot of mass transportation options ai Buses and trains that have been exported all over the word. Like san francisco had hungarian busses runing in it despite Hungary being a communist country. We still have some of that industry but production number have been greatly reduced after comunism and i dont know where thoose companies are heading.
In agriculture we have some more famus products (like Tokai Aszu wine) but the main focus of the hungarian food products (unless its a luxury product) is the hungarian shelfs.
There is a non significant Turism industry in hungary. Roughly 7%-10% of gdp
And there is the bank OTP(bank), MOL(petroleum), as big the biggest hungarian companies. The biggest thing in the hungarian economy is the automotive sector. If you see a german/japan/chines car it has parts produced in hungary. The biggest problem whit this is the fact most profits go to the companies them selfs like BMW. Also thes low value-added jobs meaning the workers aint geting that much paiment bc its not that profitable.

Budapest sees more foreign tourists than some countries. Is tourism on the same level as that of France, Italy, Spain, Turkey or Greece? No. But for how empty, boring and dilapidated the country is, there are more tourists than I expected. Okay outside of Budapest there is barely anything but Budapest keeps you entertained for a week or two. Meanwhile picturesque cities like Prague are worth maybe a 2-3 visit. Budapest is great stop for a few days for someone trying to cover Central Europe on a holiday: Vienna, Bratislava, Prague, Budapest, maybe Belgrade, Krakow. It's unique enough, big enough not to be boring forna week or two.

I genuinely like Magyar Peter’s plans. Standing out in Europe through exemplary policies and diplomacy, strenghtening(maybe expanding) and becoming a key member of the V4… the same way Orban Viktor was the lab rat for right-wing populist, the Tisza goverment could influence the revival of liberal conservatism and democratism.
Hungary’s strongest resource is its people and their ideas. The way we think and interact in the world has the potential to influence the world in ways we wouldn’t dare imagine.

Hungarian girls are like Hungarian cuisine. They are world famous in Hungary only. I have had my fair share of Hungarian cooter when I was younger. Let me just put it this way: there is more in the world to experience than just Hungarian women. I am not saying they are all bad, I have seen much worse. But the claim that they are the best, most beautiful in the world is laughable.

Hungarians don't like to stand out. Mainly because other Hungarians would drag them down. The nail that sticks out gets hammered down. Collectively? They just need to keep going their own way. That will make them stand out enough. Not trying to please the globalist overlords and EU bureaucrats. That's pretty much what Hungarians have been known for: rebellion, loopholes, malicious compliance.
