He talks to the officer, who gives him his initial assignment.

"Stand guard at the periscope entrance and ensure no one who isn't authorized touches the periscope."

The recruit follows the order and positions himself by the periscope. Fifteen minutes later, the officer comes by.

"Son, I'm switching your assignment to the mess hall. Head in there and begin washing the dishes."

The recruit complies and goes to the mess hall. He's washed roughly three dishes when the officer approaches once more.

"Pay attention, recruit—your new assignment is the supply room. I need you to check that everything is securely fastened in case we hit rough seas."

The recruit obeys again and makes his way to the supply room. Once there, he notices a crewman shifting some boxes.

"Hey," the recruit says. "Is it normal to get moved to a different assignment constantly throughout the day? I haven't stayed in one spot longer than fifteen minutes!"

The crewman replies, "Oh yeah—this sub is packed with reposts."
