How almost 850 000 more votes translates in just three additional seats?

there is a compensation system where the individual votes for the loosing candidates are added to these numbers before assigning the seats across the parties
TISZA won the individual races 95-11, so they received less "carry-over" votes than FIDESZ. This resulted in the remaining 93 "list-based" seats to be around 50-50 note that MiHazank party (around 6%, so no individual wins) only gets seats from the list-based track.
One_Ad_3499@reddit (OP)
is MiHanazak like Zavetnici (Oathkeepers) from Serbia?
IAmReallyNotAR0b0t@reddit
Yep, also far-right neo-nazi idiots.
NemErtekEgyet@reddit
how are they neo-nazi tho?
EastDefinition4792@reddit
They say that they are not racist, but the human skin's color is white - that's how.
NemErtekEgyet@reddit
any source for this?
even if thats true. That makes them racist not nazi ffs. I think you have zero clue what nazi even means.
EastDefinition4792@reddit
Nazi is a adherent to a specific, extreme political ideology that uses virulent racism as a foundation for totalitarian government, territorial expansion, and genocide, particularly against Jews, so what
Procok@reddit
Because the original nazi are dead
NemErtekEgyet@reddit
that doesnt answer the question
Based_Liberty1776@reddit
The party has close ties with openly nazi/fascist organizations, and their programme is full of points that are considered far-right (eg. they want racial segregation in public education) and they believe in typical far-right conspiracy theories.
Cultural-Visual-7106@reddit
They aren't even far-right, they are idiologiless monkeys
DaLoneGuy@reddit
vaxxed anti-vaxxers XD
Cultural-Visual-7106@reddit
You can't be far right and support Putin who the only time he ever apologized for sometning was to Israel 😭😭☠️
LifeIsNotMyFavorite@reddit
They're weird.
They support Russia, because they are removing "Nazi Ukrainians", but the also hate Ukraine because Zelenskyy is a Jewish Zionist or something.
Just Nazi nonsense.
Kurvae_Macska@reddit
Tisza is a war contributor party you dumb...
IAmReallyNotAR0b0t@reddit

Additional-Swim2681@reddit
I Hungary some people refer them as green fidesz because they are some kind of satellite party for fidesz (orbans party)
One_Ad_3499@reddit (OP)
too crazy even for Fidez?
EastDefinition4792@reddit
Not too crazy nowadays :D
Additional-Swim2681@reddit
Yes. One of the main member of the party grinded a book. Also they were more pro russia (this time they didn't mentioned eu nor russisa)
They were against covid vaccines but all of them got
bmakszim@reddit
To put it accurately, there isn’t just a losing compensation but a winning compensation as well.
michaelknight444@reddit
Even though their premise in the headline was proven wrong last night, this video still does a brillant job explaining the vote system in English
Waste-your-life@reddit
In reality TISZA will have 70% of seats with a popular vote of 53%. And Fidesz will have 27% seats with 38,5% vote. You watching popular votes, but the assigning of seats based on popular vote is a calculation of mandates based on aggregated surplus votes from single-member constituencies. And not based on solely the popular votes

Orban gerrymandering bite him in the ass?
Afraid-Rooster-9247@reddit
Gerrymandering and the vote-compensation system, Fidesh has put in place to cement their power. Without the latter, Tisza would've 5-6 seats less.
One_Ad_3499@reddit (OP)
In full D Hont Orban would gain 25 seats more
rencebence@reddit
That is such an understatement. A party that didn't exist a little over 2 years ago, just unseated Orbán's 2/3 supermajority WITH a supermajority. This was the funniest shit we've seen in a while.
Waste-your-life@reddit
Meanwhile those who voted for Orban in 2014. They went and voted Fidesz again. They did not lose their voters still. Its just those who do not want Orban in government finally showed up and voted in one way. Thats all.
AliasSubs_@reddit
this. my mother voted after 24 years! she was sick and tired of the propaganda and all the lies.
hungarian_astronaut@reddit
We like to live on the edge.
eg135@reddit
Almost as if the system was designed to give supermajority power to the winner...
One_Ad_3499@reddit (OP)
High leverage- high risk system
GeneratedEcoOver9000@reddit
No, it's the system, not the borders.
barking_dead@reddit
Oh, absolutely.
MarkMew@reddit
It's not the gerrymandering, that part still favoured him LOL. It's the "winner-compensation".
FxGnar592@reddit
He made a system specifically so that the bigger party faced with multiple smaller parties will win big, compounded by the overrepresentation of rural areas and small towns. He lost small towns and non-capitol big towns by a large margin (capitol was always against him), and his party became one of the two smaller parties facing one large one.
lefthandonthewall@reddit
pretty much
Kira_Katsumi@reddit
reading these comments ... it hurts how nobody knows how our election system really works ...
kivimango23@reddit
It is engineered to be like that.
fasz_a_csavo@reddit
It's not that complicated. People just can't be arsed to take 2 minutes to read about it. Which is incredibly ironic, considering redditoids claim to be smart.
kayliin@reddit
People don't know how it works, because the educational system is flawed. It's got nothing to do with being smart or not. Most people won't look it up, because they simply don't care about this aspect and don't think there's much to it. They vote for who they want and that's it.
fasz_a_csavo@reddit
IF you want to run your mouth about a thing, you should be at least somewhat informed about the thing. I don't expect my mother to understand how the voting system works, because she doesn't give a shit about it.
Immediate-Walrus4796@reddit
Gerrymandering
Specialist_Lab4484@reddit
seats distributed with D'Hondt matrix:
Nemzeti Választási Iroda - Országgyűlési képviselők választása
Kovab@reddit
While that's true, it doesn't explain the difference. A pure national list only system with D'Hondt would result in number of seats much closer to the proportion of votes.
Specialist_Lab4484@reddit
it is not a pure national list. it consist the national list + seat not gaining votes aka looser compensation + votes not needed for gaining the seat aka winner compensation
Kovab@reddit
Nobody claimed the opposite...
Which is the actual reason for the seats won not being close to the list results, not the D'Hondt method.
CLaz777@reddit
Because it’s complete crap. Orban and Fidesz made the system. Now everybody can see why Orban won with 2/3 in the last 12 years.
Kovab@reddit
There are many problems with the current system, but loser's compensation from the individual districts is literally the only part which is good, and makes the results more proportional than a simple FPTP.
Dazzling-Key-8282@reddit
Cause half of the seats are single member constitiencies and the national list is already compensated somewhat.
Hope we have a new system standing by 2030.
One_Ad_3499@reddit (OP)
Frankestain system?
CowZealousideal6151@reddit
D'Hondt
One_Ad_3499@reddit (OP)
it is not clear D Hondt like in Serbia
LtGenS@reddit
It is a frankenstein system yes, that combines FPTP single-member districts with countrywide party lists. The first element is much stronger in this iteration of the electoral system, bringing it close to a pure majoritarian system.
One_Ad_3499@reddit (OP)
I have never seen gerrymender backfire this badly
iSpain17@reddit
you need to add the “fraction votes” see for Fidesz - https://vtr.valasztas.hu/ogy2026/jelolo-szervezetek/1004?tab=eredmenyek
deputy votes that did not amount to a victory (so all votes for the loser in a deputy) are fraction votes carried over to the party list votes-
Baluba95@reddit
Hungary has a hybrid system (ever since 1990), where the single 'house' is filled by both winners of 106 individual districts and 93 members from party lists. Everyone votes both in the local winner takes all race for individuals (every party has 1 nominee, plus some independents), and to one of the country-wide party lists.
The tricky part is that tha individual district votes are one round, winner takes all (so the biggest party wins, even if under 50% of votes (so the biggest party wins, even if under 50% of votes), and partes must have a nominee in at least 70 districts to be eligible to have a list, so pre-vote cooperation is almost impossible. This is the new part (2014), which makes it a system favoring the largest party - a 40-30-30 distribution will result in an easy 50%+ majority for the 40% party, or the 30% partys have to fully cooperate and soft-fuse for the election, probably losing a lot of voters by doing so.
What you see on the image is another weird part, the compensation votes. Every individual district, the votes cast on the losers are added to that party's list votes, and also the winner's 'unused' votes. So if a district has 100.000 votes, and it's 45k Tisza, 40k Fidesz, 10k Mi Hazank, 5k-40k-10k added to the list, respectively. The 'loser compensation' is an old part of the system (1990), aiming to the make the final mandate distribution closer to the list %, while the 'winner compensation' part is, again, new to the Fidesz rule (2014), aiming to give more mandates to the largest party.
PandaGeneralis@reddit
Basically, the votes on the screenshot do not include the compensation votes from the single member constituencies. The juxtaposition of the mandates and the list-only votes are pretty silly this way. Otherwise it is pretty linear.
heyhoka@reddit
Compensation from the constituencies.
guldgosse@reddit
Have you ever heard of gerrymandering?
