Why is there a moon on Hungarian military equipment?

On a lot of Hungarian military equipment there is a small stamp of a moon with a face. Is there any significance of this in Hungary, or is it just a random symbol that Fég puts on their products?

AI answer: That’s actually a classic piece of Cold War history! It's a Hungarian military quality control and acceptance stamp, commonly known among collectors as the "smiling half-moon" or "man in the moon." You usually find it on Hungarian AK variants (like the AMD-65 or AKM-63), especially on the spine of steel magazines. It means the part passed factory inspection at the FÉG plant in Budapest and was officially accepted by the military. If you look closely, you might also find a "02" stamped nearby, which was Hungary's factory code in the Warsaw Pact!

But why a moon?

Because you are a lunatic if you trust it

The moon with a face symbol goes back to 18th century sabre blade decorations.

Why not?

I don't know why it's moon-shaped, maybe the hammering tool was harder to copy, it's been used since the 50s.

the moond called "hold" in hungarian
Different-Guide1713@reddit
A hold szimbólum jelentése a FÉG fegyvereken:
Összességében a hold szimbólum a FÉG fegyvereken a minőségbiztosítási próbalövés (nitro próba) jele, nem pedig a gyár saját emblémája.

It means “hold”

The "moon with a face" marking (or "Man in the Moon") is a distinct Hungarian Treasury (Honvéd Kincstár) ownership stamp used during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It served as a specific property mark to distinguish equipment belonging to the Royal Hungarian Landwehr (Honvédség) from the standard issue gear of the Austro-Hungarian Common Army, which typically bore the double-headed eagle. You will primarily find this rare hallmark on the receivers of Mannlicher M.88 and M.95 rifles, early Frommer pistols, and the crossguards of bayonets manufactured during the transition period before the "BP and Crown" stamp became the standardized acceptance mark.
Hiryu2point0@reddit
It was also used later; the "Man in the Moon" logo was applied to assault rifles and magazines at FÉG. (Weapons and Gas Equipment Factory- Weapons and Gas Equipment Factory)
I suppose this was to mark the successful moon landing.

Sounds convincing, but can't find a single source.
Is this coming from you, or is it a possible LLM hallucination?

Yes, I believe.

What is it on? Just asking because I handled lots of FÉG small arms (assault rifles and pistols) and haven't noticed it.
SignatureDapper6315@reddit (OP)
It's on an AKM 63 located on the rear trunnion. A lot of the magazines have them too on the rear rib.
No_Names78@reddit
Thanks, gonna check now, I only have an AMD and a NGV, but lots of mags.
SignatureDapper6315@reddit (OP)
I want to convert mine into a full AMD 65, but I would have to swap out the trunnion and loose the moon.
