In A New Hope, when Han and Luke rescue Leia, they dress as Storm Troopers. Leia says to Luke something along the lines of “You’re awfully short for a Storm Trooper.”

I remember it as "aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?" but I haven't see the movie in 30 years. Why does she even question it (other than because it was written that way), I always thought it was such a weird observation to make in that moment.

They weren’t clones in the original movie background, and they weren’t clones by ANH in current canon. But at least in the older (now “legends” novels, this developed into the Empire having very detailed recruiting specifications.

It is of course entirely possible that fans at some point combined the known existence of clones (“you served with my father in the Clone Wars”) with the uniform appearance and the “little short” comment to mar that assumption.
