Old HP laptop maybe 2014 locked after long time unused

Hi everyone,
My mom recently found her old HP laptop from around 2014. It hasn’t been used in years, and now we can’t get past the login screen. The account is tied to an old Yahoo email that we also can’t access anymore due to outdated recovery information, so signing in normally hasn’t been possible.
The main concern is that we believe there are important files on the laptop, like photos and documents, that we would really like to recover. Because of that, doing a full factory reset right away doesn’t seem like the best option unless it’s absolutely necessary.
I’m open to any suggestions on what the safest or most effective approach would be in this situation. Whether it’s built-in recovery options, accessing the drive another way, or anything else that might help.
Any advice or feedback would be really appreciated 🙏

Take out the drive. It's easy. Depending on the age, some laptop cases have a plate where you can remove the screws to the plate, remove the plate, then the drive.
The drive will have one connector. The wide connector Is SATA (name of the interface) power. The smaller one is SATA data. They're designed one way so there's no way to confuse them both.
Then you can get a SATA dock or enclosure. Put the old drive in that. Connect the power adapter to the dock/enclosure and a USB cable between the dock/closure and another desktop or laptop. Power on the dock/enclosure and it should show up on the other computer. From there you can open up the drive and copy the needed files to a flash drive

Boot on a usb/disk and mount the drive.

Thanks, I’m not very experienced with this

You posted this in the wrong sub.
But you should (if it's not encrypted) be able to take out the hard drive, buy a USB adapter, and plug it into another computer to get the files off.

Remove the drive and access it using a hard drive enclosure.
